Jillian Cupitt is an experienced environmental educator who has worked as a teacher and administrator in New South Wales schools. She has received awards for her work in sustainability education and has presented at several conferences. Her work focuses on teaching sustainability in schools and encouraging partnerships between schools and local councils on issues like water, waste and energy. She is the co-author of a book on teaching sustainability and currently teaches at a school in Cairns.
1. Jillian Cupitt is a well-known environmental /sustainability educator having worked in NSW in
primary education as a teacher and Assistant Principal in public schools on Sydney’s North Shore.
She was seconded by the NSW Department of Education and Communities Northern Sydney Region
as Mathematics Consultant K-6 and in 2006 she was awarded the title of NSW Environmental
Educator of the Year by the Gould League of New South Wales. Jillian has made presentations on
sustainability education at conferences in Auckland, New Zealand, Bunbury in Western Australia,
Sydney, NSW and Charles Darwin University in the Northern Territory. She took a leading role on a
steering committee in the Northern Beaches of Sydney which served as a state based task group to
develop learning activities for climate change issues. Jillian has also worked closely with her local
council and other community groups. Much of her recent work relates to the teaching of
sustainability in schools and the links schools can make with their local councils on issues relating to
water, waste and energy. Jillian has taught in rural areas and overseas including appointments to
Broken Hill, Dalby, Jandowae, Hawaii, Papua New Guinea and Singapore as Head of School – Early
Learning. In 2012, her co-authored book with friend and colleague Syd Smith – Environmental
Education Consultant “Teaching for Sustainability” was published and she moved to Cairns in mid-
2014 where she is currently teaching at Edge Hill State School. Jillian has a Masters of Environmental
Management at Macquarie University in Sydney, a Bachelor of Education Charles Sturt University -
Bathurst and has published in journals in Slovenia, Australia and the Victorian Chapter of the
Australian Association for Environmental Education.
