The History and Evolution ofThe Happy Health Hub

Ten weeks ago we found ourselves with a google
drive folder; in it was a time clock correction sheet,
weekly accomplishment sheet, and an orientation
to-do packet. Our internship was a mystery.What
seemed to be a shroud of confusion was lifted when
Kevin informed us we would be creating a new
business from scratch with zero capital (except our
extremely valuable Kaplan Consulting intern staff),
and an open direction within Health & Wellness.
After a few meetings and brainstorming we came up
with a virtual non-profit business concept called the
‘Happy Health Hub’. Our target audience was
determined to be the Kaplan Family, and services to
provide them with were to be developed as
resources and education for holistic life
improvement.

AROMATHERAPY
What is Aromatherapy?
In very simple terms, aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of pure essential oils to improve the health and balance of the skin, the body, the mind, and the soul. Thedocumented use of essential
oils goes back to Egyptian times when they were used for embalming purposes.
What are Essential Oils?
An essential oil is an aromatic liquid which is extracted from certain species of flowers, grasses, fruits, leaves, roots, and trees. If you squeeze these lavender heads or peppermint leaves and
smell your fingers, the aroma is the result of volatile oils released by the bursting of tiny glands in the flower heads and leaves. Each essential oil has a healing profile, comprised of several
characteristics, that is unique to itself. Almost all essential oils are antiseptic, and others have strong antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, or antispasmodic properties. Some
are calming, while others are stimulating.
Why use Aromatherapy?
One of the most satisfactory aspects of using essential oils medicinally and cosmetically is that they enter and leave the body with great efficiency, leaving no toxins behind. Unlike chemical
drugs, essential oils do not, as far as we know, remain in the body. They are
excreted through urine and feces, perspiration, and exhalation.
Natural oils do not cause side effects when used properly. Essential oils have the power to relax the nervous system, stimulate circulation, lift depression, reduce inflammation, and ease aches
and pains. They can balance the emotions by establishing harmony between the mind and body and lifting the conscious mind to its higher self. Oils can also penetrate the skin’s surface and
their benefits for the skin are profound. Essential oils can revitalize and rejuvenate skin of all ages and are especially helpful for skin problems such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, burns, scars, and
even some skin cancers.
How does a practitioner use Aromatherapy in a session?
There are many ways to use essential oils to benefit the body. Just one oil may be used to treat a specific issue, or a custom blend may be prepared based on the
clients’ needs. This may be done with direct inhalation, massage oil, a bath, or a compress. Essential oils are almost always diluted in a carrier oil base,
since the absolute oil is so potent.
What is Herbal Medicine?
Many nutrients can be found in the herbs and weeds that grow around us. Herbalism or Herbal medicine is the practice of using these plants to heal the body.
Since the dawn of recorded history, plants have been the primary source of medicine for people throughout the world. In fact, many cultures still use plants as a major source of
medicine today. Plants which are used as medicines have been referred to as herbs for over 4,000 years. The word “herb” is used to refer to any part of any plant used for flavoring
or medicine. Thus an herb may be a bark, a flower, a fruit, a leaf or a root, as well as a non-woody plant.
The knowledge and use of herbs was commonplace in pre-industrial times. However, with industrialization and the movement of people from the countryside to cities, knowledge
of herbs faded. This knowledge has been accumulating for centuries. The earliest records of the use of beneficial plants are nearly 5,000 years old, in a Chinese Pharmacopoeia. At
the turn of the century, doctors were still semi-herbalists, employing a large variety of plants and often making their own preparations. It was not until the middle of the 19th century
that herbalism came under scrutiny of modern science. Active constituents were isolated from herbs and their structure was duplicated synthetically; giving us our modern day
“medicine”.
Health is a slow cumulative process built up each day from our daily habits. Rather than being just “the absence of illness and injury”, it is the condition of physical, spiritual, and
social well being. Herbs can help us attain this goal of well being.
What does an Herbalist do?
An Herbalist studies the healing properties of herbs and the science of using these herbs to prepare medicine. The herbs may be taken in many forms, such as: capsules, liquid
extracts, fomentations, teas, and syrups. The Herbalist is a trained professional that will work with you to determine the best herb(s) for your needs, as well as how and when to take
them.

Road to Happiness
When stress manifests...allow happiness to
happen! Stressors compromise the lengths of our
telomeres, etching deep into our personal
cytokinesis and aging our cells, thus shortening
our lives. The effects are genetically and
emotionally nepotistic (Umea University, 2011).
The Road to Happiness provides insight to
remediate these personal and, oh, so common
challenges, and offer a complementary and
integrative arsenal of defense against the
seemingly ineluctable pressures of life.

Ask an Intern
This is a forum for the Kaplan family to reach out
and ask specific questions regarding health and
wellness. HHH will utilize the most up to date,
scientific, peer reviewed public information
available with a formulated conjoining of our
research savvy health and wellness interns to
develop conclusions to these inquiries.The
responses will be shared, not only with the
inquirer, but also discussed through Mindful
Moments, the HHH webpage, and other
channeled social media platforms as a chance to
connect with our audience with similar questions
and concerns. As we expand and grow, we will
incorporate the new and intuitive facets, as
approved by KU and the LegalTeam where
applicable.

My last formal college credit was earned while attending middle college, a
program where high school upperclassmen attend community college in lieu of
high school- I was seventeen. Now, 23 years later, I have missed the challenges
of higher learning, and understand the importance of continuing education.
Thankfully, opportunities such as this internship are available to streamline my
college learning and allocate credit for actual life experiences.
My aspirations to attend a university right out of high school drastically shifted
when I found a passion for the sport of snowboarding. That winter, so long ago,
inTahoe became the framework for my future. I was hired at Boreal Ski Area,
selling tickets. Since then, I have worked as a lift operator, in fine dining, as a
pantry chef, swim instructor, sandwich maker, baker, cashier, hotel front desk
and night auditor, bartender, terrain park maintenance,Woodward@ Copper
coach, model, snowboard clothing designer, construction worker, housekeeper,
professional snowboarder (XGames, 3rdWorld Championships, National
Champion, DewTour, Grand Prix), started a coaching and snowboard
management company, built websites, internet marketing and promotion,
hosted coaching events across the US, snowboard coach, and finally a college
student again! I can honestly say this experience has been the most fulfilling yet,
thank you everyone :)
How has this
experience inspired you
and added value to
your education?
I came to Kaplan, not looking for a degree per se,
but to gain an education, experiences, and respect.
Choosing a degree program was a matter of
upholding the best interests for humanity,
naturally an interest in health sciences, specifically
health and wellness, surfaced as the coveted
choice. A past in competitive sports, now coupled
with the desire to learn, has happily/blissfully led
me to KapCon (Kevin) where the internship
program, in conjunction with MT490 (Dr.D), has
not only changed my perspective and my tenacity,
but also changed my life. I went from Dedication,
Perseverance, Confidence to Entrepreneur,
Instigator, and Leader.

Ensuring inter-department communication
Addressing each department's current projects, highlight the potentials, and
necessitate the need for interdepartmental collaboration
Proper position placement with regards to degree, interests, and

Showing keen interest by listening, then communicating and adapting can
nip this potential 7-10 split in the bud
Maintaining performance consistency with a fast and high turnover
rate
Initiated 1 on 1 meetings to address challenges personally and alleviate
apprehension & created tutorials for easy and accessible review and training
Geneva McCloud
My name is Geneva McCloud and I reside in the metropolitan
area of Detroit, Michigan, with my son. I have always taken an
interest in healthy living. I began, my career at Kaplan
University at the age of 44 after attending numerous
semesters at community college. I had no real direction, no
real clue which road to take. After many years, I began
seeking answers from a higher power, which guided me in the
path of health and wellness.
I began sharing my knowledge with family, friends and
coworkers. They embraced my message, and now I am known
around the office, as Ms. Fitness. I take complete pride,
sharing methods of self- healing practices, while being
engaged in many of the Complementary and Alternative
Medicine Practices.
My experience with the internship and course MT-490
afforded me the opportunity to continue to strive for
excellence while adapting to change. After graduation, I will
obtain a Health and Wellness Coordinator certification in
addition to a fitness trainer certification. The journey has just
begun; next comes my Masters in Public health.
July 22, 2012 Footer text here34
How has this experience
inspired you and added
value to your education?
When I was invited to the Internship meet and greet, it sounded like a
great networking opportunity. I was nervous, but brought to the table my
willingness to help and the team and I shared our skills and knowledge,
which led to the progression of the “Happy Health Hub”. I was not aware
of the level of commitment involved. However, as I continued to connect
with the team, I found myself utilizing skills to create, implement, and
promote health and wellness. I came to the realization, this internship
would require an optimistic approach with an undefeated perspective. I
began to exploit the skills I had been taught here at Kaplan University,
which included mindfulness meditation techniques in addition to
including physical exercise to relieve the stressors that had made
attempts to impede my progress. I realized such practices would be
instrumental in an effortless approach to optimal health within the
Health andWellness division of KapConsulting.
I discern that transformation principles apply to work, life and school. I
have been inspired by this program and infer there are endless
possibilities to enhance learning and growth in all areas of my life.
Throughout this experience, my critical and quantum thinking has been
elevated. In addition to improved time management skills. I have
evolved, throughout this internship and while studying the course MT-
490. I realize gainful experience, attributes to continuous learning.
In this world, things are forever changing, and that we must all adapt to
change and welcome it as a beautiful thing. I have brought my mind, soul
and passion to this program and will be forever grateful for the
experience. We must all share our knowledge, and remain engaged in an
effort to put theory to practice. I stand by the quote, from
Leonardo DaVinci: “There is a greater story here, and it’s still being
written”.

Effectively demonstrate leadership skills
A team member had become insubordinate. I utilized my professionalism and creativity to produce a
correction action letter. I stood by the HHH values and upheld the team unity with complete integrity
and commitment to let nothing impede our progress.
Delivery of Professionalism
I was challenged to arrange the HHH team meeting, record and present. I embraced my mindfulness
meditation practice, and incorporated it into the presentation, not only help to bring my anxiety
down, but to remind everyone, of our goal, to” Get Happy, Live Healthy”.
Successfully work as team to achieve collective goals
After accepting a new role of team lead, there was a huge onboarding of interns. I had no real
knowledge of their individual skills or where to utilize their talents. I took an initiative to contact each
new member, and explain each of the concepts and our goals. They began sharing their expertise.
Jessica Zeba-Snow
I am a single mom of 4 little girls, who I
homeschool in the beautiful Green Mountains of
NorthernVermont. My children and I live for
farming, hiking, mountain biking, and trail
running. We live with a jubilant freedom and
passion every day that we spread throughout our
community.
I am in my final year, here at KU, pursuing my BS
in Nutrition Science. I currently hold a Diploma as
a Holistic Health Practitioner with a focus in
Iridology Analysis and Clinical Herbalism. I am
looking forward to continuing my education in
Neuroscience and Naturopathic Medicine with a
focus in diagnostic research.
I have had an established private practice as an
HHP in my area for over 9 years, as well as an
associated medicinal herbal product company.
July 22, 2012 Footer text here37
How has this
experience inspired you
and added value to
your education?
I have been a self-made entrepreneur for over 9 years, but have been
limited to juggling all of the aspects and responsibilities that relate to
a business, alone. The economic and financial restraints of limited
resources to insource or outsource tasks and duties, as well as
geographical restraints in my area that are not able to offer much
diversity in services or partnerships to be pursued, had it even been a
viable option economically.
The virtual team experience has been invaluable to me personally in
my growth as an entrepreneur and professional. I am able to not only
envision the ability to rejuvenate and expand my current business,
but I am also confident moving forward with future endeavors to
improve the field of health through the business networking that has
been established through my experience here at KapConsulting and
working with the establishment of Happy Health Hub.

July 22, 2012 Footer text here39
Keeping the team focused
The excitement of a new business and innovative ideas with freedom to implement what we saw fit,
posed scattered energy. Continuous, regular meetings, creating and revisiting task check lists and
organizational charts were helpful in staying in line with our priorities.
Time management
Scheduling dedicated time for course work, working in KapConsulting, and all mandatory meetings in
google calendar with alarms set to my phone; I have also found that scheduling times here for
homeschooling my children and being a mom was helpful in balancing school/work/life.
Team Collaboration in a virtual environment
Regular and consistent communication through emails, at least once weekly meetings, doc sharing,
and google drive
How has HHH and
MT490 has added value
to our education?
This experience has provided a unique
opportunity to apply our education, and more
specifically an opportunity to explore endeavors
within our field of study and passions for health
and wellness, to a real world application while
being mentored by seasoned experts and
supportive staff to facilitate our needs and
requests to implement business initiatives.
Studying alone allows for the important concepts
to be ingested. When learning is brought into a
virtual community, the knowledge takes a
quantum dimension as theories are easily put into
practice and the reciprocate. With the addition of
team work and group problem solving element,
new ideas are welcomed and novel solutions and
innovations are developed.

  • 15. July 22, 2012 Footer text here15 AROMATHERAPY What is Aromatherapy? In very simple terms, aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of pure essential oils to improve the health and balance of the skin, the body, the mind, and the soul. Thedocumented use of essential oils goes back to Egyptian times when they were used for embalming purposes. What are Essential Oils? An essential oil is an aromatic liquid which is extracted from certain species of flowers, grasses, fruits, leaves, roots, and trees. If you squeeze these lavender heads or peppermint leaves and smell your fingers, the aroma is the result of volatile oils released by the bursting of tiny glands in the flower heads and leaves. Each essential oil has a healing profile, comprised of several characteristics, that is unique to itself. Almost all essential oils are antiseptic, and others have strong antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, or antispasmodic properties. Some are calming, while others are stimulating. Why use Aromatherapy? One of the most satisfactory aspects of using essential oils medicinally and cosmetically is that they enter and leave the body with great efficiency, leaving no toxins behind. Unlike chemical drugs, essential oils do not, as far as we know, remain in the body. They are excreted through urine and feces, perspiration, and exhalation. Natural oils do not cause side effects when used properly. Essential oils have the power to relax the nervous system, stimulate circulation, lift depression, reduce inflammation, and ease aches and pains. They can balance the emotions by establishing harmony between the mind and body and lifting the conscious mind to its higher self. Oils can also penetrate the skin’s surface and their benefits for the skin are profound. Essential oils can revitalize and rejuvenate skin of all ages and are especially helpful for skin problems such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, burns, scars, and even some skin cancers. How does a practitioner use Aromatherapy in a session? There are many ways to use essential oils to benefit the body. Just one oil may be used to treat a specific issue, or a custom blend may be prepared based on the clients’ needs. This may be done with direct inhalation, massage oil, a bath, or a compress. Essential oils are almost always diluted in a carrier oil base, since the absolute oil is so potent.
  • 16. What is Herbal Medicine? Many nutrients can be found in the herbs and weeds that grow around us. Herbalism or Herbal medicine is the practice of using these plants to heal the body. Since the dawn of recorded history, plants have been the primary source of medicine for people throughout the world. In fact, many cultures still use plants as a major source of medicine today. Plants which are used as medicines have been referred to as herbs for over 4,000 years. The word “herb” is used to refer to any part of any plant used for flavoring or medicine. Thus an herb may be a bark, a flower, a fruit, a leaf or a root, as well as a non-woody plant. The knowledge and use of herbs was commonplace in pre-industrial times. However, with industrialization and the movement of people from the countryside to cities, knowledge of herbs faded. This knowledge has been accumulating for centuries. The earliest records of the use of beneficial plants are nearly 5,000 years old, in a Chinese Pharmacopoeia. At the turn of the century, doctors were still semi-herbalists, employing a large variety of plants and often making their own preparations. It was not until the middle of the 19th century that herbalism came under scrutiny of modern science. Active constituents were isolated from herbs and their structure was duplicated synthetically; giving us our modern day “medicine”. Health is a slow cumulative process built up each day from our daily habits. Rather than being just “the absence of illness and injury”, it is the condition of physical, spiritual, and social well being. Herbs can help us attain this goal of well being. What does an Herbalist do? An Herbalist studies the healing properties of herbs and the science of using these herbs to prepare medicine. The herbs may be taken in many forms, such as: capsules, liquid extracts, fomentations, teas, and syrups. The Herbalist is a trained professional that will work with you to determine the best herb(s) for your needs, as well as how and when to take them. July 22, 2012 Footer text here16 HERBALTHERAPY

  • 31. Meg Pugh July 22, 2012 Footer text here31 My last formal college credit was earned while attending middle college, a program where high school upperclassmen attend community college in lieu of high school- I was seventeen. Now, 23 years later, I have missed the challenges of higher learning, and understand the importance of continuing education. Thankfully, opportunities such as this internship are available to streamline my college learning and allocate credit for actual life experiences. My aspirations to attend a university right out of high school drastically shifted when I found a passion for the sport of snowboarding. That winter, so long ago, inTahoe became the framework for my future. I was hired at Boreal Ski Area, selling tickets. Since then, I have worked as a lift operator, in fine dining, as a pantry chef, swim instructor, sandwich maker, baker, cashier, hotel front desk and night auditor, bartender, terrain park maintenance,Woodward@ Copper coach, model, snowboard clothing designer, construction worker, housekeeper, professional snowboarder (XGames, 3rdWorld Championships, National Champion, DewTour, Grand Prix), started a coaching and snowboard management company, built websites, internet marketing and promotion, hosted coaching events across the US, snowboard coach, and finally a college student again! I can honestly say this experience has been the most fulfilling yet, thank you everyone :)
  • 32. How has this experience inspired you and added value to your education? I came to Kaplan, not looking for a degree per se, but to gain an education, experiences, and respect. Choosing a degree program was a matter of upholding the best interests for humanity, naturally an interest in health sciences, specifically health and wellness, surfaced as the coveted choice. A past in competitive sports, now coupled with the desire to learn, has happily/blissfully led me to KapCon (Kevin) where the internship program, in conjunction with MT490 (Dr.D), has not only changed my perspective and my tenacity, but also changed my life. I went from Dedication, Perseverance, Confidence to Entrepreneur, Instigator, and Leader. July 22, 2012 Footer text here32

  • 34. Geneva McCloud My name is Geneva McCloud and I reside in the metropolitan area of Detroit, Michigan, with my son. I have always taken an interest in healthy living. I began, my career at Kaplan University at the age of 44 after attending numerous semesters at community college. I had no real direction, no real clue which road to take. After many years, I began seeking answers from a higher power, which guided me in the path of health and wellness. I began sharing my knowledge with family, friends and coworkers. They embraced my message, and now I am known around the office, as Ms. Fitness. I take complete pride, sharing methods of self- healing practices, while being engaged in many of the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Practices. My experience with the internship and course MT-490 afforded me the opportunity to continue to strive for excellence while adapting to change. After graduation, I will obtain a Health and Wellness Coordinator certification in addition to a fitness trainer certification. The journey has just begun; next comes my Masters in Public health. • 35. How has this experience inspired you and added value to your education? When I was invited to the Internship meet and greet, it sounded like a great networking opportunity. I was nervous, but brought to the table my willingness to help and the team and I shared our skills and knowledge, which led to the progression of the “Happy Health Hub”. I was not aware of the level of commitment involved. However, as I continued to connect with the team, I found myself utilizing skills to create, implement, and promote health and wellness. I came to the realization, this internship would require an optimistic approach with an undefeated perspective. I began to exploit the skills I had been taught here at Kaplan University, which included mindfulness meditation techniques in addition to including physical exercise to relieve the stressors that had made attempts to impede my progress. I realized such practices would be instrumental in an effortless approach to optimal health within the Health andWellness division of KapConsulting. I discern that transformation principles apply to work, life and school. I have been inspired by this program and infer there are endless possibilities to enhance learning and growth in all areas of my life. Throughout this experience, my critical and quantum thinking has been elevated. In addition to improved time management skills. I have evolved, throughout this internship and while studying the course MT- 490. I realize gainful experience, attributes to continuous learning. In this world, things are forever changing, and that we must all adapt to change and welcome it as a beautiful thing. I have brought my mind, soul and passion to this program and will be forever grateful for the experience. We must all share our knowledge, and remain engaged in an effort to put theory to practice. I stand by the quote, from Leonardo DaVinci: “There is a greater story here, and it’s still being written”. July 22, 2012 Footer text here35
  • 36. Challenges and Solutions July 22, 2012 Footer text here36 Effectively demonstrate leadership skills A team member had become insubordinate. I utilized my professionalism and creativity to produce a correction action letter. I stood by the HHH values and upheld the team unity with complete integrity and commitment to let nothing impede our progress. Delivery of Professionalism I was challenged to arrange the HHH team meeting, record and present. I embraced my mindfulness meditation practice, and incorporated it into the presentation, not only help to bring my anxiety down, but to remind everyone, of our goal, to” Get Happy, Live Healthy”. Successfully work as team to achieve collective goals After accepting a new role of team lead, there was a huge onboarding of interns. I had no real knowledge of their individual skills or where to utilize their talents. I took an initiative to contact each new member, and explain each of the concepts and our goals. They began sharing their expertise.

  • 38. How has this experience inspired you and added value to your education? I have been a self-made entrepreneur for over 9 years, but have been limited to juggling all of the aspects and responsibilities that relate to a business, alone. The economic and financial restraints of limited resources to insource or outsource tasks and duties, as well as geographical restraints in my area that are not able to offer much diversity in services or partnerships to be pursued, had it even been a viable option economically. The virtual team experience has been invaluable to me personally in my growth as an entrepreneur and professional. I am able to not only envision the ability to rejuvenate and expand my current business, but I am also confident moving forward with future endeavors to improve the field of health through the business networking that has been established through my experience here at KapConsulting and working with the establishment of Happy Health Hub. Time management Scheduling dedicated time for course work, working in KapConsulting, and all mandatory meetings in google calendar with alarms set to my phone; I have also found that scheduling times here for homeschooling my children and being a mom was helpful in balancing school/work/life. Team Collaboration in a virtual environment Regular and consistent communication through emails, at least once weekly meetings, doc sharing, and google drive
