4. How prevalent is the problem of
poverty in Canada?
My personal take on
poverty
In 2020, it was recorded that
6.4% of Canadians lived in
poverty – this accumulates to
over 2 million individuals
Poverty is more than just the idea of
not having enough money; it’s a
violation of basic human rights that
individuals in unfortunate situations
experience. How can we spread
awareness about poverty with
digital technologies, and more
importantly, what solutions can we
implement to tackle this problem?
Problem Identification
6. Research: From what factors does poverty in Canada stem
from
Individuals with mental
and physical disabilities
are twice as likely to live
below the poverty line,
while 1 in 5 racialized
families live in poverty
within Canada.
Poverty in Canada stems from being in a
“high-risk” group. These “high-risk” groups
can be identified as people with physical or
mental disability, singles, persons in lone-
parent families, people with less than high
school education and visible minorities who
are immigrants” .
The repercussions of poverty lies
within 3 main categories; this
involves food insecurity, physical
and mental health, and
homelessness.
4 million people in Canada experience
food insecurity, 3 million Canadian
households are precariously housed,
as well as 1 in 10 Canadians cannot
afford to fill their medical
prescriptions .
8. 1) Addressing the root of the problem
• Eliminating poverty in Canada needs to involve addressing the challenges that
major “high-risk” poverty groups face
• For instance, many individuals with mental disabilities or mental health issues
end up in poverty as a result of hardships such as divorce, being terminated
from a job, or death of a family member.
• Mental illness can also setup barriers for individuals to escape poverty, such as
the ability to acquire an education and long-term employment
• Individuals from other high-risk poverty groups face similar challenges. For
example, visible minorities who are immigrants may struggle to find
employment due to their education not being recognized
• It was reported in 2016 that 60 percent of the 844,000 unemployed and
underemployed Canadians were immigrants, because their credentials were
not being recognized
Proposed Solution
9. 2) The Proposed Solution
• Establish a funding program for low-income mature students in post-
secondary education and vocational training
• Counteracts the problem regarding how “adult workers are often excluded from
access to financial supports that allow them to access higher learning”
• Opens up the door for lower income individuals to take on the opportunity to
obtain valuable skills that can assist in securing employment, which in turn can
reduce poverty levels
