9/11 dead
Hometown son's death stirs city

Gloria Johanns watched Dan F. Shanower grow up in
Naperville with her children, and after he died when a
hijacked plane slammed into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, she
knew she had to do something.
She and her husband, Charles, are spearheading a community
effort to create a memorial to all those who died in the attacks
that day. Although no exact form for the monument has been
determined, inspiration is likely to come from U.S. Navy
Cmdr. Shanower's 1997 essay, "Freedom Isn't Free."

He wrote it to honor four friends who died in 1987 in an
operations accident. The piece describes the price paid by
members of the armed forces to preserve American liberties,
said Charles Johanns.
Shanower wrote that "those of us in the military are expected
to make the ultimate sacrifice when called ... the military
loses scores of personnel each year ... each one risked and lost
his or her life in something they believed in, leaving behind
friends, family and shipmates to bear the burden and
celebrate their devotion to our country."
The committee planning the memorial has raised $8,000 so
far. Naperville Mayor George Pradel is honorary chairman.
"People not only see Dan Shanower, but they see Sept. 11 for
what it is," Pradel said. "He realized freedom wasn't free."
Pradel said he had two sites in mind for the memorial. One is
on the east side of City Hall, along the Riverwalk, where
hundreds of U.S. flags now dot the lawn. The other is at the
entrance to the Riverwalk, across from Sullivan's restaurant.

2. Jonathon Shanower, Dan's brother, also serves on the
monument committee. He said he is "obviously flattered and
overwhelmed by the attention [his] brother has received" but
declined to comment further because the family is grieving.
Dan Shanower, a 40-year-old naval intelligence officer, was in
the Pentagon on Sept. 11 gathering data on that morning's
World Trade Center attacks to brief high-ranking officials
when he was killed by the plane that crashed into the
building.
"At first you were just dumbfounded with reaching out and
thinking about what we could do," said Gloria Johanns. "You
really feel you want to do something."
She taught with Dan's mother, Pat, in Naperville District 203
for more than 20 years.
Shanower went to Naperville schools, then graduated from
Carroll College in Waukesha, Wis. He joined the Navy and
was commissioned as an officer in 1985.
Over the years, the families became close.
"I remember him more as a kid than an adult," Johanns said.
"He was funny. He could pull some pranks, although we
didn't think they were funny at the time."
One of her fondest memories of Shanower was when he was
18 and wanted a new car with a moon roof.

"He couldn't afford a new car," she said, so he cut the roof out
of what Johanns described as his jalopy.
"He was a high-spirited sort of kid," she said.
Her husband, Charles, said he believes the memorial, which
could take more than a year to create, will send a message of
resolve in the community and educate future generations .
It will join a host of other such tributes in Naperville that
include the Grand Army of the Republic memorial to soldiers
who fought in the Civil War; memorials for World War I and
the Blackhawk War; and the Naperville Roll of Honor, a plaque
on the Riverwalk honoring 112 residents whom Naperville has
lost over its history.
"The 9/11 theme behind [the proposed memorial] seems to
work extremely well," said Lewis Breese, commander of Judd
Kendall VFW Post 3873 in Naperville, who also serves on the
committee. "This is by far the worst thing that has every
happened to our country on the home front."

The planning committee also includes a group of architects
charged with designing the memorial. Gloria Johanns hopes it
represents Shanower.
"I'd like it to capture his cheerful, witty spirit and his
patriotism," she said, adding, "It is a national event, and Dan is
our personal connection to that event."
