Behavior ModificationPlan: Clay Evans
GeneralObservations:
1. Whenisolated, either alone,or in the companyof Cocoa,Clay is veryvocal in response to sound or movement at HappyTails.
He barks incessantlywhendoors open, people haveconversations, other dogs play, and etcetera.
2. WhenClay is in the companyof people, either knownto him or foreign,he is friendly, affable, and gentle.Clay is affectionate
and seems to enjoypetting,grooming,and cuddling.
3. Whenin proximityto dogs other thanCocoa,Clayattacks. The attacks have caused no harm other thanfright to other dog
and handlers.
4. Clay is food-motivated.We have changed his barkingbehavior byusinga behavior-replacement technique.
Specific Observations:
1. October 31, 2012, Whenwalkingthrough the unleashinghallway at HappyTails,DaisyRogersonwas unwittingly let into the
hall directly in front of Clay. Clay lunged at Daisy, grabbed her scruff, shook her roughly, and released her.Daisywas
completelyunharmed bythe incident and forgot it in under a minute, but her owner was unnerved for severalminutes.
Likewise,Clay was observed to be agitated for more than15minutes followingthe incident.
2. On a subsequent visit,a smalldogsnuck into Clay and Cocoa’s room behind anemployee.Claybarked, lunged, and snapped
at the dog,but did not touch the dog,who approached quite near Clay.If Claywere trulyinterested ininjuring the dog, he
was more thancapable of doingso.
3. Over Clay and Cocoa’s Thanksgiving visit, I asked anemployee to hold a small,no-threateningdogwhile I fed Clay treats.
Clay barked at the dog,but sat for the treats.I felt the employee’s obvious discomfortnegativelyimpacted the experiment,so I
cut it off.
4. December 28,2012, approximately6:30pm: While brushingloose undercoat from Clay’s britches,Glock managed to bypass a
gate and make his way into the same area Clayand I were in.Prepared to act,I watched Clay’s reaction to seeingGlock as he
crisscrossed the gardenrepeatedly.Clay remained calm as Glock approached, backingup gradually.WhenGlock attemptedto
sniff noses,Claylunged, and Glock pinned him, biting his ear.Claywas onhis back, crying, but not attemptingin any wayto
fight back.
Conclusions:
Glock did no realinjury to Clay. Clay enjoys being babied and reminded that his ear is injured, but he isn’t traumatized by the source
of the injury. The fact that Clay layon his back, crying, while Glock could have done him veryrealinjury suggests that Clay is not dog-
aggressive as I had previouslythought.

A dog-aggressive dogwould have lunged first and fought beingpinned. Once pinned, a dog-aggressive dogwould have fought to regain
its feet. That is not what Clay did.
Inprevious encounters,Clayhas had manyopportunities to injure another dog.Instead,Clay’s teethhave stoppedwellshort of
touching another dogor human.
It is mybelief that Clay is not dog-aggressive,but afraid of dogs.It is possible that Clay is reliving some traumaticepisode whenever he
is approached too closelybyanother dog, hence the lunging and biting behavior without realdamage inflicted.
Proposed Behavior ModificationPlan:
Before continuingwith BM,I’d like to know more about Clay.WhenClay was found tied to a tree in the middle of a field, what
physical condition was he in?
Was he thin? fat? Starved? Injured? Scratched? Bitten? Cut? Burned?
What was Clay tied with? Was he tethered around the neck? Was some other part of his bodytethered?
How did Cocoa came to gain Clay’s trust?
How old was she? How old was he?
How longafter he was found did their bondingoccur?
What negative experiences has Clayhad with other dogs since Cocoa came into his life?
Were there other dogs inClay’s foster home? Ages? Breeds?
Behavior modificationfor Claycenters ongeneralizinghis like for Cocoa to like for other dogs.
1. Introduce a small,young,female dogto Clay with treats.The younger,or more docile/submissive the dog,the more successful
this step will be.
2. Once Clay accepts his new friend and plays with her,we begin with a second doghaving similar characteristics.
3. Clay’s third friend will be male, slightly older, but still smalland submissive.
4. Clay’s fourthfriend will be larger, one year to 18 months old.
5. We continue until Clay generalizes trust inother dogs.
He may never overcomehis fear entirely, but we will probably succeed inreducingClay’s anxiety significantly.
