A trained sculptor born in
1958, he was the first of
nine siblings and knew
early on that he wanted to
be a professional sculptor.
To broaden his scope, he
attended the Creative Art
Academy in Benin City,
Nigeria, under the
direction of Mr. Doran
Door. He also spent time
in the studios of many
well-known contemporary
Nigerian artists, including
the late Mr. Felix Idubor
and Mr. Ben Osawe. He
credits these artists with
inspiring him and paving
the way for him to pursue
sculpture as a career.

Lena Horne
Acrylic on canvas
Louis J. Delsarte (1944- 2020) is
an American artist of African and
French ancestry known for what
critics have referred to as his
“illusionist”style.
Growing up in New York City, this
painter, draftsman, muralist, print
maker, and poet was surrounded by
music. His parent's friends included
artists and entertainers from the
Harlem Renaissance like Lena
Horne, Count Basie, Duke Ellington,
and Langston Hughes. These
influences, along with his knowledge
and interest in African-American
history and world culture, inspired
his art. He attended art classes at
the Brooklyn Museum and the Hans
Hoffman School of Art. Delsarte
earned his BA in Fine Arts Education
from Brooklyn College. Delsarte
taught painting and drawing at
numerous colleges and universities
over 42 years. He was an Associate
Professor in Arts and Humanities at
Morehouse College in Atlanta,
Georgia. Artist and educator,
Delsarte's career has influenced
countless others, and his recent
passing has inspired the staff of the
Beach Institute to dedicate this
exhibition to his memory.
