Job Titles in High Demand
There isno one jobtitle thatdominatesthe jobpostingsinthe Personal Care Science industry.Rather,
there isa wide diversityof jobsandeventhe mostfrequentlyadvertisedtitlesmake uponlyasmall

Figure 1. Most FrequentlyAdvertised JobTitlesinthe Personal Care Science Industry, February1, 2015

If we lookat the jobsby broadcategory,a differentpicture emerges. Asyoucansee inFigure 2, below,
Managementjobsaccountfor nearly650 of the total jobpostings, ornearlyone infive jobpostings.
ComputerandMathematical,SalesandRelated,Engineering,andBusinessOperationspositionsaccount
for between14% and18% of all jobsadvertisedinthe lastyear on-line.Bycontrast,Life,Physical,and
OtherScience relatedjobsmake upfewerthan1 in10 jobsposted,accountingforjustover7% of the
total. So, while Chemistsare one of the most in demandjob titles, jobsin that category make up just
a small part of the total jobsin demand inthe industry. Thisisimportantfor MBS studentstoknow,as

Many MBS studentsinthe Personal Care Science concentrationhave expressedaninterestinpursuing

Giventhese trendsinthe Personal Care Science industry jobmarket,MBSstudentscanbe assuredthat
the science andbusinessskillstaughtinthe programare helpingtopositionthem asa strongcandidates
for jobs inthe industry.Toimprove yourchancesof findinganinternshipora full-time jobsinthe
industry, however, consider broadeningyourthinkingabout careerpathways toinclude jobs in

towardscience.Itis clearthat the science knowledge youhave isalsovaluable inbusinessoccupations,
so youcouldfindsuccessina broaderarray of job pathsthan youmay have imaginedwhenyoufirst

Methods
To do thisanalysis,Iuseda tool calledLaborInsightfromBurningGlass. It allowsyouto mine datafrom
on-line jobpostingssoyoucan see trendsinthe jobmarket, such as jobtitles andskillsinhighdemand
and where jobsare concentrated, amongotherthings.Because manyjobsare postedseveral timesin
differentplacesonline,the systemusesseveral methodstoeliminateasmanyduplicate postingsas
possible (See here formore information: http://burning-glass.com).Togettothe interesting
information, LaborInsightbreaksupall the piecesof the jobdescriptionintofieldsthatcanbe analyzed.
Thisanalysisincludedon-line jobpostingsinthe personal care industryfromFebruary1,2015- January
31, 2016. To helpstudentsand otherentry-level jobseekers,Ilimitedthe analysistojobsrequiringat
leasta Bachelor’sdegree and5 yearsor lessexperience.
While thisanalysishasthe potential toshow jobseekersandemployersimportant recenttrends inthe
jobmarket, there are limitationstothiswork.Notall jobsare advertisedon-lineandnotall of those on-
line are capturedby BurningGlass. The unstructurednature of jobads can make it difficultforthe
systemtocorrectlyidentifyindividualpiecesof information effectively insome cases. So,there maybe
some irrelevantjobscaughtinthe netandsome relevantjobsmaygetleftout.Overall,however,I hope
that thisanalysisof “real-time”jobsdatagivesyoua basicunderstanding of whatisindemandinyour
area of interest.
