Celebration Guide 2022
Greetings of Peace! My hope and prayer that all is well!
The past two years were quite challenging to all of us as we
faced the pandemic. But this year 2022 is going to be exciting as we
will celebrate our NCYAF SUNDAY in person and more meaningful
as most if not all are well prepared for the said celebration. It has been
evident that all local, conference and jurisdiction young adults have
shown their commitments in doing the ministry. I am truly grateful for
your sincere and committed service in keeping the faith as empowered
young adults of our church.
We are much grateful to all who have contributed and for shar-
ing their time and effort on the making of the CYAF Week Guide for
EY 2022, and to Mr. Azil E. Aplaon, the Chair of the Worship and Lit-
urgy Committee, for being patient and diligent enough in preparing the
liturgical guide not only this year but over the years. And to those who
have helped in translating in Ilocano, Cebuano and in Tagalog.
As we celebrate CYAF Week 2022, may we continue to serve
God with faith and gladness. Let us also be reminded with the theme,
“Rebuilding and Restoring with Hope, Heralding the Full Life”.
Let us all celebrate CYAF Sunday full of joy and thanksgiving!
God bless us all!

Church – the United Church of Christ in the Philippines guided by the
theme “Rebuilding and Restoring with Hope: Heralding the Full Life”.
The contents of this Guide may be modified and be changed to
suit your respective needs according to your own context. Again, this is
just merely a suggestion to make the celebration significant and memo-
rable to all.

THEME EXPOSITION
THE THEME
General theme: “Rebuilding and Restoring with Hope:
Heralding the Full Life”
EY 2022-2023 (74th
Anniversary):
Rebuilding and Restoring with Hope: Heralding and
Full Life
Suggested text: Ezekiel 37: 1-14
REBUILDING AND RESTORATION are visions,
hopes, and actions towards the realization of
the full life. The full life means many things to the Scrip-
ture. It is not unrelated to the social vision of shalom that
you can find in the Old Testament, or to the gospel of the
reign of God as proclaimed in the New Testament, or
even the reconciled life in the Pastoral Letters. We can
safely say that the gospel of the faith is the full life which
we can experience in part or as a foretaste when God
reigns in us, in our world, and creation. The scriptures
also affirm that the full life was seen in the person of Je-
sus Christ and his work (John 10:10) and thus, something
that was a reality in the passion, suffering, death, and
resurrection of Jesus.
REBUILDING AND RESTORING presupposes an ex-
perience of fragmentation and destruction. This narrative
abounds in the Scriptures from the time of the fall (Gen
3:23) to the abandonment of God’s people’s covenant re-
lationship with God has brought so much devastation in
inter-human relations, in history, and to the earth.
(Romans 8: 22).
The theme’s annexing of the word hope (“WITH
HOPE”) adds a perspective to the praxis of restoration
and rebuilding. Set in their scriptural contexts, restora-
tion and rebuilding are not easy. The fragmentation and
6
Christian Young Adults Fellowship
the destruction were so
thorough that even the con-
cept of “original sin” was
thought of in theology, or
that going through the eye
of the needle (Mt 19:24) and
be “born again” (Jn 3: 1-7)
are requirements of faith,
or that we not only “wrestle
with flesh and blood but
with “powers and principal-
ities” (Eph 6:12-18). To
“build and to plant” (Jer
1:10) means you must dig
deep into the roots of the
human crisis, and this
would invite resistance if
not persecution. Rebuilding
and restoring with hope
acknowledges this context
but at the same tame ne-
gates this in the faithful’s
act of radical hoping.
Rebuilding and re-
storing with hope points to
our embracing the promise
of the full life and the hope
inspired by the full life. It is
this hope that generates our
“gana” for the full life. Ka-
pag ginanahan tayo, the
full life that we have em-
braced would be a reality in
the here and now of our
radical hoping.
The UCCP may be a
little off the grind with its
taking past the pandemic
and its thematic agenda of
“rebuilding and restoration
with hope.” The pandemic
still rages on and there are
surges now and then. Yet,
it is precisely at this time
when we need to muster
that prophetic will to an-
nounce hope that life can
be rebuilt and restored
from the “valley of dry
bones” (Ez 37:1-13). “Hope”
to us as a faith community
is the transgression of the
normalization of life in the
valley of dry bones. It is
what aligns us to the vision
of a fuller life for all.
Hope is what could energize
us into restoring and re-
building our lives and insti-
tutions in this pandemic-
ravaged world.
Symbolism of Elements
Jesus said in John
10:10, “I came that they
might have life and might
have it abundantly.” Herald-
ing such fullness of life
evolves images like the
Green Cross- which repre-
sents Christ’s promise of an
abundant and meaningful
life for all. Such promises
persist to dwell in every be-
liever amidst pandemics,
war, natural and human-
made calamities, and eco-
nomic and political col-
lapse. The shawl defines

in Southern Leyte — and the Church Workers of the SWLC have reaffirmed
their loyalty to the unity of the UCCP as a whole and to the integrity of the
Church leadership led by the Bishops. They have rejected the false testimonies
or fake news of the expelled Pastors.
We would like to admonish Conference Ministers, Church Workers and the
faithful to live in the truth of our being created in the image of God. The de-
famatory accusations and false witness against fellow members of the Church
are grave misconduct and put persons in harm’s way. Red tagging and false
accusations lead to serious threat to life. These acts cannot be condoned. We
shall be taking legal actions against these persons who are maligning the integ-
rity of the Church and putting fellow Church workers in danger with sustained
red tagging. The recent UCCP Quadrennial General Assembly held on May 23
-26, 2022 has unanimously adopted the Resolution to pursue cases versus red-
tagging.
Therefore, let us preserve the unity of the UCCP as a Church founded in our
common confession that Jesus Christ is the Lord of Life and creation. That the
witness of the apostles on the life and ministry of Jesus are credible and pro-
vides the basis for the growth and future of the Church in God. That the king-
dom of God is unveiled and experienced through participation in the ministry
and mission of Christ through the Church. No amount of red-tagging or any
form of intimidations can stop us from doing our pastoral and prophetic tasks.
As the bible says in 1 Corinthians 4: 8-10: “We are hard pressed on every
side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not
abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around
in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be re-
vealed in our body.”

Yet, even within the UCCP, there are discordant, if not dissentient voices mo-
tivated by personal vested interests or harboring mistrust which somehow pose
threat to the unity of the Church at the local and conference levels. What is
concerning is the alignment of these voices with the coercive and tyrannical
powers in society, which proves to us the continuing existence of the clerico-
fascist attacks reminiscent of Martial Rule as imposed 50 years ago today
(Sept. 21, 1972).
We are concerned about the spread of black propaganda videos on social me-
dia produced by SMNI News operated by Apollo Quiboloy and has been fi-
nanced by NTF-ELCAC, a government anti-insurgency agency, having huge
funding that pursues red-tagging and black propaganda against perceived or
suspected members and supporters of the Communist Party of the Philippines
(CPP). The state’s coercive and repressive power has been revealed in the
work of this agency. It has exacerbated the number of illegal arrests, red-
tagging and extrajudicial killings in the country.
The collusion of Pagmata, a group of disgruntled members and church work-
ers has evolved from their discontent about the property development program
of the Church to a handmaiden of the NTF-ELCAC. On the September 16,
2022 video interview by Jeffry Celis or known as Ka Eric Almendras 1 and
Lorraine Badoy of NTF ELCAC on SMNI news, the interviewees were Alfre-
do ‘Al’ Tinio and Samuel Pacha both from Southern Western Leyte Confer-
ence (SWLC), and the third is retired military chaplain Romeo Ngoho from
Northeast Leyte-Biliran Conference (NELBICON). Meanwhile, on the Sep-
tember 19, 2022 video is Nathaniel Anas also from SWLC.
These Pagmata-NTF-ELCAC operatives colluded to give false testimonies
implicating all UCCP Bishops as members of the CPP, and specifically target-
ed church workers from Southern Western Leyte Conference as combatants
that stock piled arms and ammunitions for the NPA. A couple Mission Co-
workers who worked in Korea amongst migrant workers were red-tagged as
fund-raiser for the CPP. These are false and unfounded accusations constitut-
ing red-tagging and black propaganda on UCCP Church leaders and Church
workers who are just doing Christ’s mission and ministry amongst the poor,
deprived and oppressed. All these allegations are verbalized in retaliation to
the case of willful insubordination in the SWLC Conference Committee on
Discipline and Conflict Resolution (CCDCR). Rev. Al Tinio and Rev. Na-
thaniel Anas are declared expelled by the SWLC Conference Committee on
Discipline (CCDCR) for conduct unbecoming as Church Workers. Their ex-
pulsion is after proper investigation and due process. The same expulsion is
accepted by the congregations where these Pastors are assigned.
So far, in response to the malicious testimonies of these expelled Pastors as
aired by Pastor Quiboloy’s news outfit, the SMNI, the overwhelming majority
of the laity — some of them are employees and officials of local governments

by Noah after the flood in
order to find land; it came
back carrying a freshly
plucked leaf, a sign of life
after the flood. Here, the
dove is carrying the missing
puzzle piece symbolizing
that God calls us to rebuild
and restore the world where
love, peace, and justice pre-
vails; to rebuild and restore
the church into its calling
as faithful instrument of
God’s sustaining love to the
world. The piece of a puz-
zle that the dove is carrying

tribution to the work of
peace and healing to the
broken world. We are but

Christ is the light of the

Christ’s light for the full-
ness of life in Matthew 5:14-

light of the world. A town
built on a hill cannot be
hidden. Neither do people
light a lamp and put it un-
der a bowl. Instead, they
put it on its stand, and it
gives light to everyone in
the house. In the same way,
let your light shine before
others, that they may see
your good deeds and glorify
your Father in heaven”. Vine

the government to respond to the needs of these marginalized
communities, the Rural Missionaries have responded to the
people in need as acts of Christian compassion. Clearly, their
work is not a terrorist act. The Rural Missionaries of the Phil-
ippines responded to the challenge of Jesus Christ at the end or
the Parable of the Good Samaritan – “Go and do likewise.” 5
We seriously and reflectively take this 50th year commemoration of the dec-
laration of Martial Law in the Philippines, for we have been striving to be
faithful to God in Christ, guided by the vision of the kingdom of God, and
strengthened in hope for the real experience of the full and meaningful life
with God and our neighbors. We are praying for justice and peace to reign in
our country and never again should we be subjected to Martial Law or au-
thoritarian regime.

PASTORALADMONITION
TO THE UCCP FAITHFUL
UCCP | Posted on September 21, 2022
Dear Conference Ministers, Church Workers and UCCP Faithful:
We greet you all in Christ’s peace and compassionate love!
The global and national political, economic and socio-cultural have been
impacting the life of the people at the grassroot level and specifically the life
of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP). For the last 74
years, the Church has been united and uniting, but not free from challenges
to its organic unity, guiding principles, faith and witness.

and human dignity. The tacit expression is found in Romans 1: 16-3:26, given
the prevalence of impiety and injustice as the human condition that manifests
humankind’s failure to know the way of peace. The way of peace is walking in
justice through active upholding of human dignity. 3
Despite our staunch advocacy for respect and protection of human rights and
upholding human dignity both past and present, there still exists violations,
such as illegal arrests, red-tagging, and various forms of denigration of the
Church, its leaders, church workers and the laity. In the purview of the continu-
ing state policies from Duterte to Marcos Jr. government, the Church decry and
laments these prevailing situations:
 Failure to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators of killings
and human rights violations that contributed to the worsening
climate of impunity in the country, where extrajudicial killings
still happen, where in the immediate past thousands were killed
without due process, mostly from urban poor communities. The
state has no effective measures to actively protect the rights of
human rights defenders who continue to be subject to threat and
intimidation, surveillance, trumped up charges, red- tagging, en-
forced disappearances, and extra-judicial killing.
 There hasn’t been an attempt or action from the Marcos, Jr. gov-
ernment to resume peace talks with the NDF. President Duterte’s
created an anti- insurgency supra-body, the National Task Force
to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), which
has not been disbanded, has escalated violations on human rights
and the international humanitarian law under a military-led all-
out war dubbed as the “One Nation” approach. This has victim-
ized unarmed activists, critics, dissenters, and the opposition and
compounded by the Anti-Terrorism Act with its provisions viola-
tive of basic civil and political rights.
 In. view of this, we express our support to the call of the United
Methodist Church, Philippine Central Conference, Board of
Church and Society to drop all charges against Rev. Glofie Bal-
untong, UMC deaconess for 24 years, and ordained as clergy-
woman in 2014. She was baselessly and maliciously charged with
attempted murder involving an incident that occurred on March
25, 2021 at 3:00 PM. But at that same date and time, witnesses
attested that Rev. Baluntong was conducting a necrological ser-
vice. 4
 We, as well express our support and solidarity with the16 mem-
bers of the Rural Missionaries of the Philippines who have been
harassed and falsely accused of crimes. Among them are four
Catholic nuns, namely: Sr. Emma Cupin, Sr. Susan Diolde, Sr.
Ma. Fatima Somogod and Sr. Mary Jane Caspillo. In the face of
the worsening economic crises, food insecurity, and inability of

Title: Rebuilding and Restoring Hope:
Heralding the Fullness of Life
Text: Ezekiel 37:1-14
T
hese past few days, we were troubled with so many
things. Many issues are affecting our lives, and so with
our spiritual well-being. The ongoing health crisis, the
increase in the inflation rate, the increasing cost of living, the weak peso
against the dollar, and the baseless accusations that malign the integrity
of the church. These have affected our faith and somehow have weak-
ened us inside. With all of these, many of us long for healing and resto-
ration not just in our church but also in our community and families.
There is a need to rebuild and restore what has been broken and weak-
ened because of circumstances.
It is so timely that our quadrennial theme bears the message of
hope in these challenging and changing times. Hope is a common word
that usually brings us to the future, something that is yet to come or
something that is to attain. This word has been interpreted many times
that, bring us to the realization that it is alive and possible, especially in
the community of faith.
The prophet Ezekiel has shown us what it takes to have hope
and what can hope do for us. In his life as a prophet, he went to a diffi-
cult time as well. He prophesied during the last days of Judah and Jeru-
salem, a time of pain and great loss. The people of Judah have lost their
beloved city Jerusalem, their lands, and their temple. And to people
who have a strong religious attachment to their temple, they thought
they have lost their God as their temple was destroyed, the only place
they know that God can only be found. This spiritual attachment has
caused so much pain to the people as abandoned and forgotten people
of God. To be a prophet at this time must be challenging, and for Ezeki-
el, who has suffered the same pain and struggles, he knew he needs to
stand out and carry hope to the people even if he himself had almost
lost of hope.
The vision of Ezekiel is extraordinary and heavy. The emotions
and the scenario is so dark that it was described in the midst of a dark
valley of dry bones. Maybe we could wonder why would God use this
kind of scenario to bring hope to the people. This probably is not so in-
viting to the people. The valley of dry bones is seen as lonely, and scary
and it only reminds us of death. Can something good come out of
BIBLICO THEOLOGICAL REFLECTION
10
Christian Young Adults Fellowship
this dark scenario?
The prophet Ezekiel must have wondered why this kind of
vision is given to him. This probably sends him something to
learn. He was shown that kind of scenario to see the ugly realities
of life. He needs to be reminded of the very need of the people,
and his task is to carry the vision of hope to the people. To be able
to do that, he is to be fully immersed in the struggles of his own
people. Yes. It is uncomfortable to imagine and see this kind of
vision but God uses this dark scenario to emphasize that there is
hope and there is life, and God is present.
There are two kinds or images of hope that we can see
from the vision of Ezekiel. First, HOPE GIVES LIFE. The oppo-
site of hope is death. If we lose hope, then we live as if we are like
dead people. This is understandable in the case of the people of
Israel. They have lived as if they are dead already; they have not
seen hope and going home is uncertain.
The very purpose of this vision is to uplift and give hope
to Ezekiel and the people. But the irony is, this is not an inspiring
nor inviting vision. Instead, it created a sneak pick of how miser-
able the situation is as compared to very dry bones. A situation
that depicts the traumas that people are experiencing. But here,
God uses this scenario to enable them to see that even dry bones
can have life and hope, that even a dark reality can be restored
because there is God, there is hope. God uses this vision to let the
people know God’s presence even in the midst of despair.
The second image of hope in the vision of Ezekiel is that
HOPE COMES IN WORDS. The action word “speak or prophesy”
often comes in the text. It appears in v. 4 that says, “Prophesy to
these bones…”and in verse 9 saying, “Prophesy to the wind/
breath…” There is power in words, there is hope in words, and
therefore God wanted Ezekiel to use that power to give hope to
people, to give life and breath to people, and to reassure and
strengthen people in the most challenging days of their lives.
Never underestimate the power of words. As they say….”Words
can either make or break people's lives”
In the vision of Ezekiel, he was reminded of this sacred
responsibility again. That in times of uncertainty and struggles,

We are cognizant of the historical relevance and the recall of the declaration of
Martial Law 50 years ago. The UCCP through the General Assembly issued a
statement on Martial Law, on May 20, 1974 which underscore, “the military
has a big hand in carrying out of government programs…We are deeply con-
cerned by the fact that many of those being detained have not been charged in
court. We appeal for a speedy disposition of justice.” 1
This was a courageous
stance of the Church for the respect of civil liberties and human rights.
Reflecting on the historical precedence and theological assertion of the Church
on the protection of human dignity and human rights based on the biblico-
theological foundations, the UCCP Statement of Faith and affirmed by the
Statement on Public Issues of the World Council of Churches 11th Assembly,
we say:
“We acknowledge the prophets’ call to God’s covenanted people to work for
justice and peace, to care for the poor, the outcast, and the marginalized, and to
be a light to the nations (Micah 6:8; Isaiah 49:6). We recognize the calling to a
lived faith that embodies Christ’s example, affirming the dignity and worth of
all, regardless of race, gender, class, religion or any other characteristic.”2
Within the perspective of recent history where popularity of political leaders
from dynastic families and rising into the top positions of the country, the ma-
jority of youth lack of adequate knowledge and understanding of the dark years
of Martial Law from 1972 to 1986, allowed the proliferation of fantasy coated
perception of the realities contingent on the Philippine society. The state’s
tendencies to revert back to repressive and totalitarian governance, should
make the Church vigilant and enable the Church members to hold fast to their
faith imperatives along with the principles of international human rights law,
affirm and emphasized the necessity of such a universal framework of legal
accountability for the violation of human dignity and rights.
Our assertation of the dignity of human life and the establishment of just and
peaceful social order that heralds the kingdom of God gives vent to the embod-
ying of Christ’s love and compassion for people in communities and the larger
society. This posits that the leaders of the land have not followed the way of
Christ as the way of peace, which as a Christian ethic upholds human rights

he must speak to give hope and life. The task of speaking is
strongly connected to hope. Words must speak of hope, must
speak of life, encouragement, and inspiration. Just like Ezekiel,
we are tasked to speak for life and hope. We may share the same
agony and pain that our people are experiencing, but we are ex-
pected to rise up and move above our personal struggles, fears,
and pain. We cannot let ourselves be drowned in the misery of
life. We are the Ezekiel of these days, the prophets that carry the
words of hope and life. Let us use our words to give life and not to
break life. That is why in our tradition, sermon is the main part of
our worship. People need to hear words of hope, and its us to car-
ry these words because we are stewards of words.
Today, this power to speak are being abused. We used words to
hurt people, to cause death to others, to malign the church's integrity
and the people of God. Instead of giving hope and life.. it seems like
many are speaking to hurt and take life. Isn’t this a distortion of our
divine task to speak the fullness of hope and life? Isn’t this disrespecting
the purpose of our call to speak for hope and life? Despite all the chal-
lenges, we cannot give up our power to speak so that others may see
hope and have life, so that others may experience the fullness of life.
So, what is the church's role in this valley of dry bones? Let us
speak words that give life and hope. For we see hope in every kind word
spoken, we see hope in the kindness of humanity, we see hope in every
faithful church, and we see hope in the continuing ministry for justice
and genuine and lasting peace.
Friends, the message of hope for us today is still alive. Hope
must be lived and spoken. Let us rejoice in the call to be the Ezekiel of
these days. Let us speak hope in words and in deeds. Amen!

Seven Inspiring Hymn Stories For Daily Devotion
[Selections taken from Amazing Grace, 366 Hymns Stories for Personal Devotions by Kenneth Osbeck,

WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS
Joseph Scriven, 1819-1886
A man that hath friends must show himself friendly: And there is a friend that sticketh closer than a
brother. (Proverbs 18:24 KJV)
Atrue friend loves and accepts us just as we are, stays close to us in good or in bad, and is
always ready to help in time of need. Because the author of this hymn text found just such
a friend in his Lord, he decided to spend his entire life showing real friendship to others.
Joseph Scriven had wealth, education, a devoted family, and a pleasant life in his native
Ireland. Then unexpected tragedy entered. On the night before Scriven’s scheduled wedding, his
fiancé drowned. In is deep sorrow, Joseph realized that he could find the solace and support he
needed only in his dearest friend, Jesus.
Soon after this tragedy, Scriven dramatically changed his lifestyle. He left Ireland for
Port Hope, Canada, determined to devote all of his extra time in being a friend and helper to oth-
ers. He often gave away his clothing and possessions to those in need, and he worked—without
pay—for anyone who needed him. Scriven became known as “the Good Samaritan of Port Hope”.
When Scriven’s mother became ill in Ireland, he wrote a comforting letter to her, en-
closing the words of his newly written poem with the prayer that these brief lines would remind
her of a never-failing heavenly Friend. Sometimes later, when Joseph Scriven himself was ill, a
friend who came to call on him happened to see a copy of these words scribbled on scratch paper
near his bed. The friend read the lines with interest and asked, “Who wrote those beautiful words?”
“The Lord and I did it between us”, was Scriven’s reply.
What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a
privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what
needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.
Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should
never be discouraged—Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness—Take it to the Lord
in prayer.
Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precious
savior, still our refuge—Take it to the Lord in prayer. Do thy friends despise, forsake
thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer, in His arms He’ll take and shield thee—Thou wilt
find a solace there.
For Today: Psalm 6:9; Mark 11:24; John 15:13-16; 1 John 5:14, 15
Like Joseph Scriven, we too can find relief from our burdens when we turn to our Lord as a friend.

LOVE DIVINE, ALL LOVES EXCELLING
Charles Wesley, 1707-1788
This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the
world that we might live through Him. (1 John 4:9)
W
e must never underestimate the power of love in our human relationships—
whether marriages, family, business associations, or friendships. The divine
love of God for man far excels all other forms of love.
“Love Divine… “is another of the more than 6500 hymns by Charles Wesley,
the “sweet bard of Methodism”. This fine text—written in 1747—touches various ele-
ments of Christian doctrine. It extols the love of God as expressed in the incarnation of
Christ. Then it refers to the Wesleyan concept of entire sanctification—that any believ-
er might live without consciously sinning and thereby find the promised “rest” men-
tioned in Hebrews 4:9. The “Alpha and Omega” of verse two (first and last letters of
the Greek alphabet) also reflect this Wesleyan teaching, that the experiences of conver-
sion and sanctification are thought of as the “beginning of faith” and the “end or object
of faith”. The third stanza emphasizes the truth that the Spirit of God indwells the tem-
plate or body of each believer, while the fourth stanza anticipates the glorious culmina-
tion of our faith when “we cast our crowns before Thee, lost in wonder, love and
praise.”
Although Christians may have differences of interpretation regarding the
doctrine of sanctification, we can agree on this basic truth: It ought to be a normal de-
sire for each believer to grow in the grace of our Lord.
Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heav’n, to earth come down; fix in us
Thy humbling dwelling; all Thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, Thou art all compassion;
pure, unbounded love Thou art; visit us with Thy salvation; enter ev’ry trembling
heart.
Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit into ev’ry troubled breast! Let us all in
Thee inherit; let us find that second rest. Take away our bent to sinning, Alpha and
Omega be; end of faith, as its beginning, set our hearts at liberty.
Come, almighty to deliver, let us all Thy life receive; suddenly return, and
never, nevermore Thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve Thee as
Thy hosts above, pray and praise Thee without ceasing, glory in Thy perfect love.
Finish the Thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be; let us see Thy
great salvation perfectly restored in Thee. Changed from glory into glory, till heav’n
we take our place, till we cast our crowns before Thee, lost in wonder, love and praise.
For Today: John 3:14-21; Philippians 1:6; Colossians 1:28; 1 John 3:11-24
God’s love must dominate our hearts, minds, and wills. Pray that this
will become increasingly true in your life. Carry this portion of the hymn with
you—

TRUST AND OBEY
John H. Sammis, 1846-1919
But Samuel replied, “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as
much as in obeying the voice of the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and
to heed is better than the fat of rams.” (1 Samuel 15:22)
L
ife can often be a restless, disrupted existence until we give ourselves
wholeheartedly to something beyond ourselves and follow and obey it
supremely. Such implicit trust in God’s great love and wisdom with a
sincere desire to follow His leading should be every Christian’s goal. Our will-
ingness to trust and obey is always the first step toward God’s blessings in our
lives.
In 1886 Daniel B. Towner, director of the music department at Moody
Bible Institute, was leading the music for evangelist D. L. Moody’s series of
meetings in Brockton, Massachusetts. A young man rose to give a testimony,
saying “I am not quite sure—but I am going to trust, and I am going to obey.”
Mr. Towner jotted down his statement and sent it to the Rev. J. H. Sammis, a
Presbyterian minister and later a teacher at Moody, who wrote the present five
stanzas.
Salvation if God’s responsibility. Our responsibility is to trust in that
salvation and then to obey its truths. “Trust and Obey” presents a balanced
view of a believer’s trust in Christ’s redemptive work, and it speaks of the re-
sulting desire to obey Him and do His will in our daily lives. Then, and only
then, do we experience real peace and joy.
When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, what a glory He sheds on our
way! While we do His good will He abides with us still, and with all who will trust and
obey.
Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies, but His smile quickly drives it away; not
a doubt nor a fear, not a sigh nor a tear, can abide while we trust and obey.
Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share, but our toil He doth richly repay; not a
grief nor a loss, not a frown nor a cross, but is blest if we trust and obey.
But we never can prove the delights of His love until all on the altar we lay, for the
favor He shows and the joy He bestows are for them who will trust and obey.
Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet, or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
what He says we will do, where He sends we will go— Never fear, only trust and obey.
Chorus: Trust and obey—for there’s no other way to be happy in Je-
sus—but to trust and obey.
For Today: Psalm 37:3-5; John 8:31; John 14:23; James 2:14-26; 1 John 2:6
Experience the glory and abiding presence of Christ as you determine to trust
Him more completely and obey His leading more fully in all that you do. Carry
this musical reminder with you remembering—

A“last will and testament” is an
important and official legal docu-
ment that a person writes to let
people know what should be done with his
or her possessions after that person dies.
The people who get that person’s belong-
ings or money after he or she dies are the
heirs.
God, too, has made up a will and
named his heirs. “God promised every-
thing to the Son as an inheritance,” says
Hebrews 1:2. In the end, Jesus will have
all things under his control and owner-
ship—all natural resources, all govern-
mental power, all human intelligence, all
the riches of the earth. Everything will be
under his authority and command.
And while Jesus doesn’t have to
share the inheritance with anyone, he will!
Romans 8:17 calls us “co-heirs with
Christ” (NIV). Jesus will not keep his
inheritance to himself. He has promised
that he will share all he inherits with any-
one who will trust him. Scripture says that
God’s children will inherit home in heav-
en, an eternal body made for us by God
himself, all God’s promises, and all the
good things of heaven. Someday each one
of us will leave this earth and let go of
everyone we have loved and everything
we have enjoyed. We’ll be left with only
our eternal inheritance. But we will not be
disappointed. It will be everything we’ve
anticipated and more.
DISCUSSION STARTERS
What kind of things do people
inherit from other people?
Wills go into effect only after
death. On a spiritual level, whose
death put our inheritance into
effect?
Day 7
YOUR
INHERITANCE
You are no longer a slave
but God’s own child. And
since you are his child,
God has made you his
heir.
GALATIANS 4:7
Since we are his chil-
dren, we are his heirs. In
fact, together with Christ
we are heirs of God’s
glory.
ROMANS 8:17
The Spirit is God’s guar-
antee that he will give us
the inheritance he prom-
ised and that he has pur-
chased us to be his own
people. He did this so we
would praise and glorify
him.

Have you ever noticed how some salad
dressings separate in the bottle? The
vinegar is heavier so it settles in the
bottom, while the lighter oil and seasonings sit
on top. When we shake it up, it comes out mixed
together. But if it sits for a while again, it will
separate again.
Here on earth, we have bodies and
souls that are intertwined. But the day is coming
when our bodies and souls will separate. When
we die, our bodies will become lifeless shells.
But we will continue to exist as souls—either
with Jesus in heaven or separated from him in
hell.
The Bible says that when the be-
liever’s soul leaves his or her body, this person
is immediately “at home with the Lord.” While
there is much we don’t understand about heaven,
we do know that when we’re there, we’ll feel
like we’ve finally arrived at home. We’ll be very
content here as souls without bodies. But we
won’t be like that forever.
As great as it will be in heaven
after we die, God has something even better
in mind for our eternal future. He will not
leave our dead bodies in the ground forev-
er—he will raise up our bodies from the dead.
But our new bodies will be so much better than
our old ones —they’ll be given a divine makeo-
ver so they’ll be perfect and completely pleasing
to God. Our souls and bodies will be reunited to
live forever in the new heaven and new earth.
We will live with Christ forever—with glorified
bodies and souls.
DISCUSSION STARTERS
What does it mean to feel “at home”
somewhere? What are some places
where you feel most at home?
Jesus had glorified body—like ours
will be someday—when he rose from
the dead. What do we know about his
body from things he did after he rose
from the dead? (See Luke 24:13-53
and John 20-21.)
How can it give you hope now, while
you’re here on earth, to know that your
soul will never die?
Day 6
BODIES AND
SOULS
I long, yes, I faint with
longing to enter the
courts of the LORD.
With my whole being,
body, and soul, I will
shout joyfully to the liv-
ing God.
PSALM 84:2
Don’t be afraid of those
who want to kill your
body; they cannot touch
your soul. Fear only
God, who can destroy
both soul and body in
hell.
MATTHEW 10:28
We are fully confident,
and we would rather be
away from these earthly
bodies, for then we will
be at home with the
Lord.

WOUNDED FOR ME
W. G. Ovens, 1870-1945 (verse 1)
Gladys W. Roberts, 1888-? (verses 2-5)
To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an exam-
ple that you should follow in His steps. (1 Peter 2:21)
Death by crucifixion was one of the worst forms of dying. No Roman
citizen was ever crucified; this horrible death was reserved only for
Rome’s enemies. The Roman scourge was a most dreadful instrument
of torture and suffering. It was made of sinews of oxen, and sharp bones were
inter-twisted among the sinews so that every time the lash came down upon a
body, these pieces of bone inflicted fearful lacerations and literally tore off
chunks of flesh from the person’s bones. This is what Christ endured in accom-
plishing our redemption. But the physical suffering was not the worst. Rather,
the weight of human sin and the separation from God the Father because of His
wrath against sin were the real causes of the Savior’s death.
But simply knowing about Christ’s sufferings and death is not
enough. We must personally appropriate this to our own lives. We must say,
“It was for me!” We must allow the Holy Spirit to do in us subjectively all that
Christ has done for us objectively. Then, after we have experienced this re-
demptive work in our lives, we must humbly, lovingly, and thoughtfully
“follow in His steps” and seek to restore others.
The five stanzas of this thoughtful hymn cover the whole story of
redemption, from the Savior’s suffering to His second coming. When this
hymn is sung, then, all of the verses must be used; none can be deleted. Start
softly and slowly and gradually build to a thrilling climax - “O how I praise
Him—He’s coming for me!”
Wounded for me, wounded for me, there on the cross He was wounded for me; gone my
transgressions, and now I am free, all because Jesus was wounded for me.
Dying for me, dying for me, there on the cross He was dying for me; now in
His death my redemption I see, all because Jesus was dying for me.
Risen for me, risen for me, up from the grave He has risen for me; now ever-
more from death’s sting I am free, all because Jesus has risen for me.
Living for me, living for me, up in the skies He is living for me; daily He’s
pleading and praying for me, all because Jesus is living for me.
Coming for me, coming for me, one day to earth He is coming for me; then
with what joy His dear face I shall see; O how I praise Him—He’s coming for
me!
For Today: Psalm 65:3; 103:12; Isaiah 53; Ephesians 2:5
Let you soul rejoice as you review the complete redemption Christ has provided for
you. Sing this hymn as you go realizing that—

HOW GREAT THOU ART!
English words by Stuart K. Hine, 1899-
Every day I will praise You and extol Your name for ever and ever. Great is the Lord
and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom. (Psalm 145:2, 3)
T
oday’s inspiring hymn of praise and adoration reminds us of God’s unlimited
power and love in creation and redemption. Although written in the past centu-
ry, the hymn has become familiar to congregations just since the close of World
War II. It especially became an international favorite after the Billy Graham Evangelis-
tic Team used it in their crusades during the late 1940’s and early 1950’s.
The original text was written by a Swedish pastor, Carl Boberg, in 1886.
While visiting a beautiful country estate, Boberg was caught in a sudden thunderstorm.
The awesome and violent lightning and thunder quickly ended, leaving clear brilliant
sunshine and the calm, sweet singing of the birds in the trees. Falling on his knees in
awe and adoration of Almighty God, the pastor wrote nine stanzas of praise. Swedish
congregations began to sing his lines to one of their old folk tunes. The text was later
translated into German and Russian and ultimately into English by the Reverend S. K.
Hine and his wife, English missionaries to the people of Ukraine. When war broke out
in 1939, it was necessary for the Hines to return in Britain, where Mr. Hine added the
fourth stanza to this hymn. These four stanzas by Stuart Hine have since ministered and
inspired God’s people worldwide:
O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds Thy
hands have made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy pow’r thru-
out the universe displayed!
When thru the woods and forest glades I wander and hear the birds sing
sweetly in the trees, when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur and hear
the brook and feel the gentle breeze.
And when I think that God, His son not sparing, sent Him to die, I scarce can
take it in—That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to
take away my sin!
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation and take me home, what
joy shall fill my heart! Then I shall bow in humble adoration and there pro-
claim, my God how great Thou art!
Refrain: Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee; how great Thou art,
how great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee; how great
Thou art, how great Thou art!
For Today: Deuteronomy 3:24; Psalm 48:1; Isaiah 40:26, 28; Romans 1:20
Take time to think once again about the unfathomable greatness of God and His won-
derful redeeming love for each of us.
O Store Gud tune Swedish Medley
Then sings my soul , my Sav - ior God , to Thee;
How great Thou art , how great Thou art !

H
ave you ever given an older woman
your seat or listen to an older man tell
stories about his childhood? Have
you ever invited an older couple to join you for
a meal or asked for advice from a grandparent
or mentor? Whether you have or not, do you
think these actions are just good, old-fashioned
manners, or are they more than that?
Showing respect and giving honor to
older people are more than good manners; they
are based on God’s Word and honor God him-
self. The respect we show (or don’t show) to
older people is a window into the respect (or
lack of respect) we have for God. We show
respect in our body language— the way we sit,
stand up straight, and look an older person in
the eye when he or she speaks. We avoid using
disrespectful tones of voice. We show interest
on what the person has to say rather than ridi-
culing or simply tuning it out. These are the
ways we show respect to older people and, in
doing so, show respect for God.
As we grow in our respect for the
Lord, our growth should show itself in respect
and honor for these people he has made in his
image and put in our lives for a purpose. Any
disregard—like rolling our eyes at what older
people say or ignoring their requests or instruc-
tions—reveals that we think we are smarter
and more with it than they are, and that we
think their opinions, preferences, and experi-
ences have little value. But when we seek to
brighten the lives of older people by giving
them the respect they deserve, we honor what
they have to offer us and the world.
DISCUSSION STARTERS
What are some ways God has
blessed you through having older
people in your life? How have you
benefited from their experience,
wisdom, and love?
Why do you think older people tend
to be disrespected in our society?
How does it make any person feel to
be ignored, ridiculed, or forgotten?
How could you be a blessing to some
older people you know?

Forgiveness is not easy. When someone
hurts you, it’s hard to resist becoming
resentful or trying to make the other
person pay. But when that person does the
same thing to you a second time, it is even
harder to forgive. You feel like that person is
not at all sorry and is taking advantage of you.
The religious leaders in Jesus’ day
taught that you should forgive someone two
times, but if the person hurts you a third time,
you were not obligated to forgive. So when
Peter suggested that perhaps you should for-
give up to seven times, he thought he was go-
ing far beyond what could be expected of any-
body. He thought it only reasonable to set
some limits on forgiveness to avoid being tak-
en advantage of. And he was sure Jesus would
give him a pat on the back for his generosity.
But Jesus said he should forgive not
seven times but seventy times seven times.
Jesus said to keep on forgiving beyond what is
reasonable. In other words, forgive others the
way you’ve been forgiven—because God has
forgiven you far more than seven times. He’s
forgiven too many times to count! You see,
when God offers us forgiveness, he is opening
himself up to being taken advantage of. And he
keeps on forgiving.
To be in Christ is to live in an atmos-
phere of overflowing forgiveness. And our
willingness—or our resistance— to generously
forgive others reveals whether or not we’re
really breathing in that air.
DISCUSSION STARTERS
How does it feel when someone
hurts you the same way more than
once?
What do you think Jesus meant when
he said we should forgive seventy

How can seeing God as a generous
forgiver help us to forgive those who
have hurt us?

WONDERFUL GRACE OF JESUS
Words and music by Haldor Lillenas, 1885-1959
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that thought He was rich, yet for
your sakes He became poor, so that you thought His poverty might become rich. (2
Corinthians 8:9)
T
he wonderful grace of Jesus will be the theme that will echo through-
out the corridors of heaven during all eternity. It should also be the
joyful exclamation of every Christian now whenever he thinks of Cal-
vary and the deep love of our Savior.
“Wonderful Grace of Jesus” is one of the most inspiring hymns in
our hymnals and it has been used extensively by both choirs and congrega-
tions since it was written and composed by Haldor Lillenas in 1918. Born in
Norway, Mr. Lillenas came to the United States as a child. He married Bertha
Mae Wilson, a songwriter also, and they traveled together extensively, fur-
nishing songs and choirs for many of the leading song leaders in the country,
including the noted Charles Alexander. Mr. Alexander found this hymn,
among the approximately 4,000 that Lillenas wrote, to be particularly useful
as a mass choir selection in the great crusades in the early years of this centu-
ry. And the song has remained popular ever since. The reminder of Christ’s
“all sufficient grace” that is truly “deeper than the mighty rolling sea” and
“higher than the mountain” still moves us to stand in awe each time we sing it
in a church service.
Wonderful grace of Jesus, greater than all my sin; how shall my tongue de-
scribe it, where shall its praise begin? Taking away my burden, setting my
spirit free, for the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.
Wonderful grace of Jesus, reaching to all the lost, by it I have been par-
doned saved to the uttermost; chains have been torn asunder, giving me
liberty, for the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.
Wonderful grace of Jesus, reaching the most defiled, by its transforming
power making him God’s dear child, purchasing peace and heaven for all
eternity—and the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.
Chorus: Wonderful the matchless grace of Jesus, deeper than the mighty
rolling sea; higher than the mountain, sparkling like a fountain, all sufficient
grace for even m; broader than the scope of my transgressions, greater far
than all my sin and shame; O magnify the precious name of Jesus, praise His
name!
For Today: Acts 15:11; Titus 3:7; Hebrews 4:16; 1 Peter 5:10
Contemplate again the “scope of your transgressions” and the forgiveness and
love of Christ as He stretches out His hand to you. Praise His precious name
as you go singing—

LIVING FOR JESUS
Thomas O. Chisholm, 1866-1960
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living
sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—which is your spiritual worship. Do not conform
any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your
mind. (Romans 12:1, 2)
F
or the Christian, a foremost priority must be to live for Christ and to seek first
His kingdom (Matthew 6:33). That does not line up with all the talk we hear
today about self-realization. The Christian, however, knows that we were creat-
ed by God that we might glorify Him. Therefore, we should not live to please ourselves
but rather to exalt and serve our Lord. “My dearest treasure the light of His smile”—the
ultimate goal of our lives.
“Living for Jesus” was written in 1917 by Thomas Chisholm at the request of
the composer, Harold Lowden, who had used his tune two years earlier with another
text. Lowden, however, was not satisfied with the union of his tune with the earlier text
and wrote Mr. Chisholm, suggesting the title “Living for Jesus” for the new hymn set-
ting. Chisholm felt very inadequate for the task, but within two weeks the words were
completed.
Thomas Chisholm had been an editor, a schoolteacher, and a Methodist min-
ister before ill health forced him to begin a less strenuous life as an insurance salesman.
His favorite endeavor had always been the writing of poetry, and he continued to do this
all through his 94 years. “I have greatly desired,” he said, “that each hymn or poem
might send some definite message to the hearts for whom it was written.” Though hum-
ble in spirit and frail in health, Chisholm found that writing encouraging words such as
these for God’s people to sing was his “pathway of blessings.”
Living for Jesus a life that is true, striving to please Him an all that I do,
yielding allegiance, glad-hearted and free—this is the pathway of blessing for
me.
Living for Jesus who died in my place, bearing on Calv’ry my sin and dis-
grace—such love constrains me to answer His call, follow His leading and
give Him my all.
Living for Jesus thru earth’s little while, my dearest treasure the light of His
smile, seeking the lost ones He died to redeem, bringing the weary to find rest
in Him.
Chorus: O Jesus, Lord and Savior, I give myself to Thee, for Thou in Thine
atonement didst give Thyself for me. I own no other Master—my heart shall
be Thy throne: My life I give, henceforth to live, O Christ, for Thee alone.
For Today: Mark 12:33; Romans 6:13; 2 Corinthians 4:10, 11
Tomorrow is God’s secret, but today is your opportunity to live cooperatively with and
for Him. Make it “God’s today.” Live this day to glorify His Son in every possible way.
Sing as you go—

Celebration Guide 2022
Have you ever heard someone described
as a scapegoat? It’s someone who
takes the blame that really belongs to
someone else. For example, when the teacher
demands who turned all the desks upside down
while she was gone and one student steps up and
says he did it, when really a large group of stu-
dents participated, he’s the scapegoat.
The Bible says that all of us have
sinned. We’re all guilty. And the punishment for
sin is death. But God has provided a scape-
goat—someone who will take on himself all the
blame for our sin. He gave us a visible picture of
this in the Old Testament observance of the
annual Day of Atonement. On that day, two
goats were chosen. One goat was killed to pro-
vide a picture of the death of the substitute for
sin. The priest put his hand on the other goat—
the scapegoat—and confessed the people’s sins.
By doing this, he ceremonially transferred the
sin to the goat. Then the scapegoat was sent out
into the wilderness to take the sin away from the
community.
When Jesus died, he became the
scapegoat for all the wrongs we’ve done. Like
the goat in Old Testament times, he was inno-
cent but he took the blame for our sin on him-
self. And through his death, he carried our sin
far away so that we don’t have to live under a
heavy weight of guilt and shame. Just as the
guilt for sin was placed on the scapegoat and it
went into the wilderness never to be seen again,
so Christ has taken on our sin and removed it so
that it can never be thrown back in our faces.
Now we can enjoy the complete forgiveness if
God.
DISCUSSION STARTERS
Have you ever observed a person or
group being made into a scapegoat?
In what ways is Jesus as our scapegoat
better than the scapegoat the Israelites
had in Old Testament times?
What difference does it make in your
life to truly understand that your sin is
gone?
Day 3
THE SCAPEGOAT
He will lay both of his
hands on the goat’s head
and confess over it all
the wickedness, rebel-
lion, and sins of the peo-
ple of Israel. In this way,
he will transfer the peo-
ple’s sins to the head of
the goat. Then a man
specially chosen for the
task will drive the goat
into the wilderness. As
the goat goes into the
wilderness, it will carry
all the people’s sins up-
on itself into a desolate
land.
LEVITICUS 16:21-22
He has removed our sins
as far from us as the east
is from the west.
PSALM 103:3

S
ome people are pickier about cleanli-
ness than others. While some of us can
live in a messy room or eat in an un-
sanitary kitchen, others can’t. Cleanliness is
very important to God. Not so much personal
cleanliness, but spiritual cleanliness. God can-
not tolerate the filthiness of sin in his presence.
To help us understand this, in Old
Testament times God made himself at home in
the Holy of Holies, a special room in the Jew-
ish Temple that could only be entered by the
high priest once a year. And even the high
priest could enter only after he had cleansed
himself carefully. God instructed the people of
Israel to do an annual cleaning—a day set
aside to cleanse God’s holy dwelling place—
by making sacrifices for their sin. It wasn’t
dust and dirt that God wanted cleaned out. It
was the uncleanness of his people’s sinful
attitudes and actions.
On that solemn day, the people of
Israel fasted and prayed to God for forgiveness
while the priest offered sacrifices. The sacrific-
es would cover the impurity of their sin for
another year. But it was no permanent solution
to the problem of sin. That special day fore-
shadowed and anticipated a greater, permanent
cleansing of God’s people and his dwelling
place—the hearts and lives of believers. The
day of cleansing to come would be accom-
plished by a special priest—Jesus—who did
not need a cleansing ceremony. He was already
perfectly clean. Christ’s death took care of our
sin problem for good. He washed away our sin
with his blood so we can become holy enough
to live in God’s home with him forever.
DISCUSSION STARTERS
How much mess and dirt can you
tolerate?
Why do you think God set aside a
special day of cleansing for his peo-
ple?
This special day was a time to reflect
and mourn over sin. Would you and
your family benefit from a set aside
for this?
Day 2
CLEANING
DAY
On the tenth day of the ap-
pointed month in early au-
tumn, you must deny your-
selves… On that day offer-
ings of purification will be
made for you, and you will
be purified in the LORD’S
presence from all your sins.
LEVITICUS 16:29-30
It’s your sins that have cut
you off from God. Because
of your sins, he has turned
away and will not listen
anymore.
ISAIAH 59:2
Unlike those other high
priests, he does not need to
offer sacrifices every day.
They did this for their own
sins first and then for the
sins of the people. But Jesus
did this once for all when he
offered himself as the sacri-
fice for the people’s sins.

ost airplanes and submarines have
an escape hatch. It’s a door that
opens to provide a way out in an
emergency. Similarly, many legal contracts
have what is called an escape clause. It de-
scribes a way out of the contract without hav-
ing to fulfill the agreement.
Some people think that to pray
passionately for something and then to follow
it with “if it be your will” is giving God an
escape clause—a way out of doing what
we’re asking him to do. But saying “if it be
your will” is not giving God an escape clause
or helping him save face. It is a humble
recognition that we can’t presume to know
what God will do. It’s a commitment to trust
God regardless of what he does.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego
didn’t pretend that they knew what God
would do in their situation when they were
thrown into a blazing hot furnace, and there is
no evidence that they cried out God telling
him what they thought should do. Because
they knew God and trusted God, they be-
lieved he would do what was right, even if it
resulted in their death. Their commitment was
to remain true to God no matter what. They
knew God needs no escape clause. He can be
trusted to always do what is right.

Which do you think would have
required more genuine faith for

commit to love him even if he
didn’t?

looks like when God saves and
when he does not?

f you’ve rarely read and discussed God’s Word together as a
family, it can be awkward at first. But that initial awkwardness
fades as conversations are sparked and understanding deepens.
We have a treasure to pass to our children – the Bible, which contains God’s
message to us and the answers to life’s greatest questions. Because it is so im-
portant to us, we want to talk about it.
The one-week devotion is designed for everyone around the table to
share and interact with it. You might choose to have a different family mem-
bers read the various verses, and you can encourage conversations by discuss-
ing the questions at the end of each devotion. The first question is answerable
for family members of all ages, elementary and up. It is designed to draw fam-
ily members in and to get everyone talking about their own thoughts and expe-
rience. The next two questions are more thought provoking and in some cases
more personal.
Paul wrote, “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all
for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10: 31) I’m praying for you as you seek to
glorify God around your dinner table – that He will be pleased, and that your
family or group will have some laughs, perhaps shed some tears, and grow
together toward God. – Nancy Guthrie, NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE

HYMN “Work in Your Kingdom” HFJ #302
Work in your kingdom advances and continues,
Even through hard times, all odds and tribulations,
Despite our human infirmities and weakness,
Use us O savior, till the task is done.
There is no service impossible to render,
If we but trust in your strength and ion your power,
Make us, O God, to be diligent and zealous
Until your full will here on earth be done.
Lord, all our time we now offer in your service,
All the resources to us you have entrusted,
Use all our knowledge, our intellect and wisdom,
Our enthusiasm, strength and might, O God.
All of our talents which are your gifts from heaven,
We would be careful to use these as intended,
So that your kingdom be built up exalted,
O God our Parent, source of love and light.
CLOSING PRAYER

with a spirit that is progressive and an attitude that
is open-minded. May you continue to bless and
empower all the efforts of our church to remain
faithful to your mandate in the great commission
even in her many imperfect ways. May you find us

Make me a servant, humble and meek
Lord let me lift up, those who are weak
And may the pray’r of my heart always be
Make me a servant, make me a servant
Make me a servant today
Lord make me a servant, faithful and true
Give us Your Heart Lord in all that we do
And may the pray’r of our home always be
Makes us a servant, make us a servant
Lord make us a servant today.

TAWAG SA PAGSIMBA (Pangulo)
Duol,
atong simbahon ang Ginoo sa tanang kabuhatan.
BINUKSANG AWIT “Niining Bag-ong Adlaw” APP 58
Niining bag-ong adlaw karon among ibayaw
Among mga tingog pagdayeg kanimo
Walay kinutoban ang gugma mo kanamo,
Dalaygon ka O Dios sa kahangtoran.
Koro:
Katingalahan O Dios tanang binuhat mo,
Ang mga kabulakan, kakahoyan usab
Yamog nga matin-aw niining bag-ong adlaw;
Dalaygon ka O Dios sa kahangtoran.
Nagahiusa O Dios tanang katawhan mo
Imo nga gahom ang nailhan sa tanan,
Matuod nga Dios sa among katigulangan
Dalaygon ka O Dios sa kahangtoran.
BINUKSANG PAG-AMPO (Tanan)
Magbubuhat nga Ginoo, nagpasalamat kami Kanimo tungod sa
matahum nga adlaw. Salamat sa imong kalinaw sa hunahuna ug
malangkubong pahiyum nga nag-abi-abi sa matag usa taliwala sa face
mask nga nagtabon sa among mga panagway. Nagpasalamat kami
Kanimo tungod niining dako nga bag-ong adlaw sa pakigdugtong sa
Imong pagkamatinud-anon ngadto sa kinabuhi ug pag-alagad sa
Christian Young Adults Fellowship sa United Church of Christ in the
Philippines.
Sa magasugod kami niining adlawa uban niini nga pagsimba,
among gihangyo Imong Balaang Espiritu nga makig-uban kanamo.
Hatagi kami sa imong mga Balaanong pulong pinaagi sa among mga
baba aron isulti ang Imong mga Pulong uban ang mainitong kaluoy
ug pagpaubos.

KANTA TI PANAGYAMAN “Christian Unity” HFJ #272
Words: John Oxenham, 1908; alt;
Music: Alexander R. Reinagle, c.1830
Jesus Christ our Lord we pray, that our life shall be
Living channels of faith and love, Christian unity
Chorus:
Bless, O Christ, we humbly pray, this our Christian unity;
So, our faith and love shall be following your way.
When the way may seem so hard, and our faith is tried,
May we help each other, Lord, carry each one’s load. (Cho)
May we help each other grow in our faith in you;
May you help us to forgive, and your grace to show. (Cho)
As we seek, Lord, to reclaim living faith of old,
May the lessons of the past guide us in the task. (Cho)
Our commitment be renewed to your mission, Lord;
Make us channels of unity, following your way. (Cho)

Come, let’s reclaim together the vision of the pioneers’,
To serve beyond all burdens reach out to one and all,
In obedience to God’s divine will, we seek for the reign of God.
Come, dreamers, visionaries, examples of true witnesses,
Leaving the trace of footprints, for people to tread on,
With a burning faith and commitment,
proclaiming God’s message of love.

  • 3. 62 Christian Young Adults Fellowship 3 Celebration Guide 2022 Greetings of Peace! My hope and prayer that all is well! The past two years were quite challenging to all of us as we faced the pandemic. But this year 2022 is going to be exciting as we will celebrate our NCYAF SUNDAY in person and more meaningful as most if not all are well prepared for the said celebration. It has been evident that all local, conference and jurisdiction young adults have shown their commitments in doing the ministry. I am truly grateful for your sincere and committed service in keeping the faith as empowered young adults of our church. We are much grateful to all who have contributed and for shar- ing their time and effort on the making of the CYAF Week Guide for EY 2022, and to Mr. Azil E. Aplaon, the Chair of the Worship and Lit- urgy Committee, for being patient and diligent enough in preparing the liturgical guide not only this year but over the years. And to those who have helped in translating in Ilocano, Cebuano and in Tagalog. As we celebrate CYAF Week 2022, may we continue to serve God with faith and gladness. Let us also be reminded with the theme, “Rebuilding and Restoring with Hope, Heralding the Full Life”. Let us all celebrate CYAF Sunday full of joy and thanksgiving! God bless us all! JOAN B. MISSIONA President National Christian Young Adults Fellowship WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT
  • 4. 4 Christian Young Adults Fellowship Warmest Christian greetings to all of you amidst the many chal- lenges that our church is facing nowadays! Nevertheless, we are happy to introduce the CYAF Week 2022 Celebration Guide and hopeful that you find this relevant to our situa- tions today. This is to guide the CYAF constituents in the different local churches in celebrating our vital role in the life and ministry of our Church – the United Church of Christ in the Philippines guided by the theme “Rebuilding and Restoring with Hope: Heralding the Full Life”. The contents of this Guide may be modified and be changed to suit your respective needs according to your own context. Again, this is just merely a suggestion to make the celebration significant and memo- rable to all. We acknowledge the countless sources of the contents of this one-week celebration guide: The UCCP National Office through its official website as sources of some documents and compilations; The 12th UCCP General Assembly Materials; Rev. Wella Hoyle-De Rosas for the Biblico-Theological Reflec- tion on the theme; Selections taken from Amazing Grace, 366 Hymns Stories for Personal Devotions by Kenneth Osbeck, © 1990; Selections taken from Dinner Table Devotions and Discussion Starter by Nancy Guthrie, Nashville, Tennessee; The NWMJA CYAF through Mr. Ralph Oscar Bagaboyboy for the Cebuano Liturgy translation; Mr. Howard Memeg Eckman, NLJ CYAF Convenor for facilitat- ing in the making of the Ilokano Worship Liturgy; Ms. Aprileen Baldemor of the South Luzon Jurisdiction CYAF for also facilitating in the making of Tagalog Worship Litur- gy and a Special thanks to Pastor Isagani Casambros of NESTCON who translated the liturgy from its Original English version; and Ms. Alexandria Cabalida for the encoding works. • 5. 60 Christian Young Adults Fellowship 5 Celebration Guide 2022 THEME EXPOSITION THE THEME General theme: “Rebuilding and Restoring with Hope: Heralding the Full Life” EY 2022-2023 (74th Anniversary): Rebuilding and Restoring with Hope: Heralding and Full Life Suggested text: Ezekiel 37: 1-14 REBUILDING AND RESTORATION are visions, hopes, and actions towards the realization of the full life. The full life means many things to the Scrip- ture. It is not unrelated to the social vision of shalom that you can find in the Old Testament, or to the gospel of the reign of God as proclaimed in the New Testament, or even the reconciled life in the Pastoral Letters. We can safely say that the gospel of the faith is the full life which we can experience in part or as a foretaste when God reigns in us, in our world, and creation. The scriptures also affirm that the full life was seen in the person of Je- sus Christ and his work (John 10:10) and thus, something that was a reality in the passion, suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus. REBUILDING AND RESTORING presupposes an ex- perience of fragmentation and destruction. This narrative abounds in the Scriptures from the time of the fall (Gen 3:23) to the abandonment of God’s people’s covenant re- lationship with God has brought so much devastation in inter-human relations, in history, and to the earth. (Romans 8: 22). The theme’s annexing of the word hope (“WITH HOPE”) adds a perspective to the praxis of restoration and rebuilding. Set in their scriptural contexts, restora- tion and rebuilding are not easy. The fragmentation and
  • 6. 6 Christian Young Adults Fellowship the destruction were so thorough that even the con- cept of “original sin” was thought of in theology, or that going through the eye of the needle (Mt 19:24) and be “born again” (Jn 3: 1-7) are requirements of faith, or that we not only “wrestle with flesh and blood but with “powers and principal- ities” (Eph 6:12-18). To “build and to plant” (Jer 1:10) means you must dig deep into the roots of the human crisis, and this would invite resistance if not persecution. Rebuilding and restoring with hope acknowledges this context but at the same tame ne- gates this in the faithful’s act of radical hoping. Rebuilding and re- storing with hope points to our embracing the promise of the full life and the hope inspired by the full life. It is this hope that generates our “gana” for the full life. Ka- pag ginanahan tayo, the full life that we have em- braced would be a reality in the here and now of our radical hoping. The UCCP may be a little off the grind with its taking past the pandemic and its thematic agenda of “rebuilding and restoration with hope.” The pandemic still rages on and there are surges now and then. Yet, it is precisely at this time when we need to muster that prophetic will to an- nounce hope that life can be rebuilt and restored from the “valley of dry bones” (Ez 37:1-13). “Hope” to us as a faith community is the transgression of the normalization of life in the valley of dry bones. It is what aligns us to the vision of a fuller life for all. Hope is what could energize us into restoring and re- building our lives and insti- tutions in this pandemic- ravaged world. Symbolism of Elements Jesus said in John 10:10, “I came that they might have life and might have it abundantly.” Herald- ing such fullness of life evolves images like the Green Cross- which repre- sents Christ’s promise of an abundant and meaningful life for all. Such promises persist to dwell in every be- liever amidst pandemics, war, natural and human- made calamities, and eco- nomic and political col- lapse. The shawl defines 59 Celebration Guide 2022 in Southern Leyte — and the Church Workers of the SWLC have reaffirmed their loyalty to the unity of the UCCP as a whole and to the integrity of the Church leadership led by the Bishops. They have rejected the false testimonies or fake news of the expelled Pastors. We would like to admonish Conference Ministers, Church Workers and the faithful to live in the truth of our being created in the image of God. The de- famatory accusations and false witness against fellow members of the Church are grave misconduct and put persons in harm’s way. Red tagging and false accusations lead to serious threat to life. These acts cannot be condoned. We shall be taking legal actions against these persons who are maligning the integ- rity of the Church and putting fellow Church workers in danger with sustained red tagging. The recent UCCP Quadrennial General Assembly held on May 23 -26, 2022 has unanimously adopted the Resolution to pursue cases versus red- tagging. Therefore, let us preserve the unity of the UCCP as a Church founded in our common confession that Jesus Christ is the Lord of Life and creation. That the witness of the apostles on the life and ministry of Jesus are credible and pro- vides the basis for the growth and future of the Church in God. That the king- dom of God is unveiled and experienced through participation in the ministry and mission of Christ through the Church. No amount of red-tagging or any form of intimidations can stop us from doing our pastoral and prophetic tasks. As the bible says in 1 Corinthians 4: 8-10: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be re- vealed in our body.” THE UCCP COUNCIL OF BISHOPS September 21, 2022
  • 7. 58 Christian Young Adults Fellowship Yet, even within the UCCP, there are discordant, if not dissentient voices mo- tivated by personal vested interests or harboring mistrust which somehow pose threat to the unity of the Church at the local and conference levels. What is concerning is the alignment of these voices with the coercive and tyrannical powers in society, which proves to us the continuing existence of the clerico- fascist attacks reminiscent of Martial Rule as imposed 50 years ago today (Sept. 21, 1972). We are concerned about the spread of black propaganda videos on social me- dia produced by SMNI News operated by Apollo Quiboloy and has been fi- nanced by NTF-ELCAC, a government anti-insurgency agency, having huge funding that pursues red-tagging and black propaganda against perceived or suspected members and supporters of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). The state’s coercive and repressive power has been revealed in the work of this agency. It has exacerbated the number of illegal arrests, red- tagging and extrajudicial killings in the country. The collusion of Pagmata, a group of disgruntled members and church work- ers has evolved from their discontent about the property development program of the Church to a handmaiden of the NTF-ELCAC. On the September 16, 2022 video interview by Jeffry Celis or known as Ka Eric Almendras 1 and Lorraine Badoy of NTF ELCAC on SMNI news, the interviewees were Alfre- do ‘Al’ Tinio and Samuel Pacha both from Southern Western Leyte Confer- ence (SWLC), and the third is retired military chaplain Romeo Ngoho from Northeast Leyte-Biliran Conference (NELBICON). Meanwhile, on the Sep- tember 19, 2022 video is Nathaniel Anas also from SWLC. These Pagmata-NTF-ELCAC operatives colluded to give false testimonies implicating all UCCP Bishops as members of the CPP, and specifically target- ed church workers from Southern Western Leyte Conference as combatants that stock piled arms and ammunitions for the NPA. A couple Mission Co- workers who worked in Korea amongst migrant workers were red-tagged as fund-raiser for the CPP. These are false and unfounded accusations constitut- ing red-tagging and black propaganda on UCCP Church leaders and Church workers who are just doing Christ’s mission and ministry amongst the poor, deprived and oppressed. All these allegations are verbalized in retaliation to the case of willful insubordination in the SWLC Conference Committee on Discipline and Conflict Resolution (CCDCR). Rev. Al Tinio and Rev. Na- thaniel Anas are declared expelled by the SWLC Conference Committee on Discipline (CCDCR) for conduct unbecoming as Church Workers. Their ex- pulsion is after proper investigation and due process. The same expulsion is accepted by the congregations where these Pastors are assigned. So far, in response to the malicious testimonies of these expelled Pastors as aired by Pastor Quiboloy’s news outfit, the SMNI, the overwhelming majority of the laity — some of them are employees and officials of local governments 7 Celebration Guide 2022 our joy and creativity in do- ing God’s mission to the world. The White Dive rep- resents our peaceful means of staining shalom. In Christianity, dove symboliz- es Holy Spirit – the Sustain- er. As believer of God the Sustainer, we are called to be instrument of sustaining grace for all. In Old Testa- ment, a dove was released by Noah after the flood in order to find land; it came back carrying a freshly plucked leaf, a sign of life after the flood. Here, the dove is carrying the missing puzzle piece symbolizing that God calls us to rebuild and restore the world where love, peace, and justice pre- vails; to rebuild and restore the church into its calling as faithful instrument of God’s sustaining love to the world. The piece of a puz- zle that the dove is carrying is our humble part of a con- tribution to the work of peace and healing to the broken world. We are but part means we relate with others who are working for peace and justice in the world. Kerosene Lamp- Christ is the light of the world and we are sharing Christ’s light for the full- ness of life in Matthew 5:14- 16, Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it un- der a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven”. Vine - represents connectivity to God and God’s creation. It brings us back to Christ’s saying, that without God we are nothing. We depend on our existence, our life work, and our all to God alone. The Brick Wall- represents Nehemiah’s rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem that invites collective effort and cooperation among mem- bers of the UCCP as well as the communities where our local churches are located. The Brick Wall is encircled by the Community Circle which means our life work is but part of the global work, we work together amongst ourselves and with other faith communities and even with the rest com- munities who have different beliefs, cultures, and tradi- tions. The missing puzzle pieces be- tween earth and brick wall represents brokenness due to the flight of God’s people from the covenant relation- ship with God. Community circle represents the unity. The vine has a profound meaning like connection, strength, and determina- tion. The unity of God’s people is the strength of UCCP. In this logo, gear represents focus in this quadrennium – rebuilding and restoring – with hope that God is with us in our innovations. Pandemic due to Co- rona Virus Disease 2019, escalating oil price hike, in- creasing unemployment rate, high hunger rate, extra judicial killings, red tag- ging, oppression, and ex- ploitation of people and natural resources are the faces of brokenness in our world and country today. We are praying for justice and peace to reign in our country and never again should we be subjected to Martial Law or au- thoritarian regime. The global and national political, economic and socio-cultural have been impacting the life of the people at the grassroot level and specifically the life of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP). For the last 74 years, the Church has been united and uniting, but not free from challenges to its organic unity, guiding principles, faith and witness.
  • 9. 56 Christian Young Adults Fellowship and human dignity. The tacit expression is found in Romans 1: 16-3:26, given the prevalence of impiety and injustice as the human condition that manifests humankind’s failure to know the way of peace. The way of peace is walking in justice through active upholding of human dignity. 3 Despite our staunch advocacy for respect and protection of human rights and upholding human dignity both past and present, there still exists violations, such as illegal arrests, red-tagging, and various forms of denigration of the Church, its leaders, church workers and the laity. In the purview of the continu- ing state policies from Duterte to Marcos Jr. government, the Church decry and laments these prevailing situations:  Failure to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators of killings and human rights violations that contributed to the worsening climate of impunity in the country, where extrajudicial killings still happen, where in the immediate past thousands were killed without due process, mostly from urban poor communities. The state has no effective measures to actively protect the rights of human rights defenders who continue to be subject to threat and intimidation, surveillance, trumped up charges, red- tagging, en- forced disappearances, and extra-judicial killing.  There hasn’t been an attempt or action from the Marcos, Jr. gov- ernment to resume peace talks with the NDF. President Duterte’s created an anti- insurgency supra-body, the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), which has not been disbanded, has escalated violations on human rights and the international humanitarian law under a military-led all- out war dubbed as the “One Nation” approach. This has victim- ized unarmed activists, critics, dissenters, and the opposition and compounded by the Anti-Terrorism Act with its provisions viola- tive of basic civil and political rights.  In. view of this, we express our support to the call of the United Methodist Church, Philippine Central Conference, Board of Church and Society to drop all charges against Rev. Glofie Bal- untong, UMC deaconess for 24 years, and ordained as clergy- woman in 2014. She was baselessly and maliciously charged with attempted murder involving an incident that occurred on March 25, 2021 at 3:00 PM. But at that same date and time, witnesses attested that Rev. Baluntong was conducting a necrological ser- vice. 4  We, as well express our support and solidarity with the16 mem- bers of the Rural Missionaries of the Philippines who have been harassed and falsely accused of crimes. Among them are four Catholic nuns, namely: Sr. Emma Cupin, Sr. Susan Diolde, Sr. Ma. Fatima Somogod and Sr. Mary Jane Caspillo. In the face of the worsening economic crises, food insecurity, and inability of 9 Celebration Guide 2022 Title: Rebuilding and Restoring Hope: Heralding the Fullness of Life Text: Ezekiel 37:1-14 T hese past few days, we were troubled with so many things. Many issues are affecting our lives, and so with our spiritual well-being. The ongoing health crisis, the increase in the inflation rate, the increasing cost of living, the weak peso against the dollar, and the baseless accusations that malign the integrity of the church. These have affected our faith and somehow have weak- ened us inside. With all of these, many of us long for healing and resto- ration not just in our church but also in our community and families. There is a need to rebuild and restore what has been broken and weak- ened because of circumstances. It is so timely that our quadrennial theme bears the message of hope in these challenging and changing times. Hope is a common word that usually brings us to the future, something that is yet to come or something that is to attain. This word has been interpreted many times that, bring us to the realization that it is alive and possible, especially in the community of faith. The prophet Ezekiel has shown us what it takes to have hope and what can hope do for us. In his life as a prophet, he went to a diffi- cult time as well. He prophesied during the last days of Judah and Jeru- salem, a time of pain and great loss. The people of Judah have lost their beloved city Jerusalem, their lands, and their temple. And to people who have a strong religious attachment to their temple, they thought they have lost their God as their temple was destroyed, the only place they know that God can only be found. This spiritual attachment has caused so much pain to the people as abandoned and forgotten people of God. To be a prophet at this time must be challenging, and for Ezeki- el, who has suffered the same pain and struggles, he knew he needs to stand out and carry hope to the people even if he himself had almost lost of hope. The vision of Ezekiel is extraordinary and heavy. The emotions and the scenario is so dark that it was described in the midst of a dark valley of dry bones. Maybe we could wonder why would God use this kind of scenario to bring hope to the people. This probably is not so in- viting to the people. The valley of dry bones is seen as lonely, and scary and it only reminds us of death. Can something good come out of BIBLICO THEOLOGICAL REFLECTION
  • 10. 10 Christian Young Adults Fellowship this dark scenario? The prophet Ezekiel must have wondered why this kind of vision is given to him. This probably sends him something to learn. He was shown that kind of scenario to see the ugly realities of life. He needs to be reminded of the very need of the people, and his task is to carry the vision of hope to the people. To be able to do that, he is to be fully immersed in the struggles of his own people. Yes. It is uncomfortable to imagine and see this kind of vision but God uses this dark scenario to emphasize that there is hope and there is life, and God is present. There are two kinds or images of hope that we can see from the vision of Ezekiel. First, HOPE GIVES LIFE. The oppo- site of hope is death. If we lose hope, then we live as if we are like dead people. This is understandable in the case of the people of Israel. They have lived as if they are dead already; they have not seen hope and going home is uncertain. The very purpose of this vision is to uplift and give hope to Ezekiel and the people. But the irony is, this is not an inspiring nor inviting vision. Instead, it created a sneak pick of how miser- able the situation is as compared to very dry bones. A situation that depicts the traumas that people are experiencing. But here, God uses this scenario to enable them to see that even dry bones can have life and hope, that even a dark reality can be restored because there is God, there is hope. God uses this vision to let the people know God’s presence even in the midst of despair. The second image of hope in the vision of Ezekiel is that HOPE COMES IN WORDS. The action word “speak or prophesy” often comes in the text. It appears in v. 4 that says, “Prophesy to these bones…”and in verse 9 saying, “Prophesy to the wind/ breath…” There is power in words, there is hope in words, and therefore God wanted Ezekiel to use that power to give hope to people, to give life and breath to people, and to reassure and strengthen people in the most challenging days of their lives. Never underestimate the power of words. As they say….”Words can either make or break people's lives” In the vision of Ezekiel, he was reminded of this sacred responsibility again. That in times of uncertainty and struggles, 55 Celebration Guide 2022 LET FREEDOM, JUSTICE AND PEACE BLOSSOM IN OUR MINDS AND IN SOCIETY, UPHOLD HUMAN DIGNITY AND PROTECT HUMAN RIGHTS! UCCP | Posted on September 20, 2022 We are cognizant of the historical relevance and the recall of the declaration of Martial Law 50 years ago. The UCCP through the General Assembly issued a statement on Martial Law, on May 20, 1974 which underscore, “the military has a big hand in carrying out of government programs…We are deeply con- cerned by the fact that many of those being detained have not been charged in court. We appeal for a speedy disposition of justice.” 1 This was a courageous stance of the Church for the respect of civil liberties and human rights. Reflecting on the historical precedence and theological assertion of the Church on the protection of human dignity and human rights based on the biblico- theological foundations, the UCCP Statement of Faith and affirmed by the Statement on Public Issues of the World Council of Churches 11th Assembly, we say: “We acknowledge the prophets’ call to God’s covenanted people to work for justice and peace, to care for the poor, the outcast, and the marginalized, and to be a light to the nations (Micah 6:8; Isaiah 49:6). We recognize the calling to a lived faith that embodies Christ’s example, affirming the dignity and worth of all, regardless of race, gender, class, religion or any other characteristic.”2 Within the perspective of recent history where popularity of political leaders from dynastic families and rising into the top positions of the country, the ma- jority of youth lack of adequate knowledge and understanding of the dark years of Martial Law from 1972 to 1986, allowed the proliferation of fantasy coated perception of the realities contingent on the Philippine society. The state’s tendencies to revert back to repressive and totalitarian governance, should make the Church vigilant and enable the Church members to hold fast to their faith imperatives along with the principles of international human rights law, affirm and emphasized the necessity of such a universal framework of legal accountability for the violation of human dignity and rights. Our assertation of the dignity of human life and the establishment of just and peaceful social order that heralds the kingdom of God gives vent to the embod- ying of Christ’s love and compassion for people in communities and the larger society. This posits that the leaders of the land have not followed the way of Christ as the way of peace, which as a Christian ethic upholds human rights PASTORAL STATEMENTS

The task of speaking is strongly connected to hope. Words must speak of hope, must speak of life, encouragement, and inspiration. Just like Ezekiel, we are tasked to speak for life and hope. We may share the same agony and pain that our people are experiencing, but we are ex- pected to rise up and move above our personal struggles, fears, and pain. We cannot let ourselves be drowned in the misery of life. We are the Ezekiel of these days, the prophets that carry the words of hope and life. Let us use our words to give life and not to break life. That is why in our tradition, sermon is the main part of our worship. People need to hear words of hope, and its us to car- ry these words because we are stewards of words. Today, this power to speak are being abused. We used words to hurt people, to cause death to others, to malign the church's integrity and the people of God. Instead of giving hope and life.. it seems like many are speaking to hurt and take life. Isn’t this a distortion of our divine task to speak the fullness of hope and life? Isn’t this disrespecting the purpose of our call to speak for hope and life? Despite all the chal- lenges, we cannot give up our power to speak so that others may see hope and have life, so that others may experience the fullness of life. So, what is the church's role in this valley of dry bones? Let us speak words that give life and hope. For we see hope in every kind word spoken, we see hope in the kindness of humanity, we see hope in every faithful church, and we see hope in the continuing ministry for justice and genuine and lasting peace. Friends, the message of hope for us today is still alive. Hope must be lived and spoken. Let us rejoice in the call to be the Ezekiel of these days. Let us speak hope in words and in deeds. Amen! • 12. 12 Christian Young Adults Fellowship Seven Inspiring Hymn Stories For Daily Devotion [Selections taken from Amazing Grace, 366 Hymns Stories for Personal Devotions by Kenneth Osbeck, © 1990, Kregel Publications, Grand Rapids, Michigan, 49516, U.S.A.] WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS Joseph Scriven, 1819-1886 A man that hath friends must show himself friendly: And there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. (Proverbs 18:24 KJV) Atrue friend loves and accepts us just as we are, stays close to us in good or in bad, and is always ready to help in time of need. Because the author of this hymn text found just such a friend in his Lord, he decided to spend his entire life showing real friendship to others. Joseph Scriven had wealth, education, a devoted family, and a pleasant life in his native Ireland. Then unexpected tragedy entered. On the night before Scriven’s scheduled wedding, his fiancé drowned. In is deep sorrow, Joseph realized that he could find the solace and support he needed only in his dearest friend, Jesus. Soon after this tragedy, Scriven dramatically changed his lifestyle. He left Ireland for Port Hope, Canada, determined to devote all of his extra time in being a friend and helper to oth- ers. He often gave away his clothing and possessions to those in need, and he worked—without pay—for anyone who needed him. Scriven became known as “the Good Samaritan of Port Hope”. When Scriven’s mother became ill in Ireland, he wrote a comforting letter to her, en- closing the words of his newly written poem with the prayer that these brief lines would remind her of a never-failing heavenly Friend. Sometimes later, when Joseph Scriven himself was ill, a friend who came to call on him happened to see a copy of these words scribbled on scratch paper near his bed. The friend read the lines with interest and asked, “Who wrote those beautiful words?” “The Lord and I did it between us”, was Scriven’s reply. What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer. Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged—Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness—Take it to the Lord in prayer. Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precious savior, still our refuge—Take it to the Lord in prayer. Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer, in His arms He’ll take and shield thee—Thou wilt find a solace there. For Today: Psalm 6:9; Mark 11:24; John 15:13-16; 1 John 5:14, 15 Like Joseph Scriven, we too can find relief from our burdens when we turn to our Lord as a friend. (1 John 4:9) W e must never underestimate the power of love in our human relationships— whether marriages, family, business associations, or friendships. The divine love of God for man far excels all other forms of love. “Love Divine… “is another of the more than 6500 hymns by Charles Wesley, the “sweet bard of Methodism”. This fine text—written in 1747—touches various ele- ments of Christian doctrine. It extols the love of God as expressed in the incarnation of Christ. Then it refers to the Wesleyan concept of entire sanctification—that any believ- er might live without consciously sinning and thereby find the promised “rest” men- tioned in Hebrews 4:9. The “Alpha and Omega” of verse two (first and last letters of the Greek alphabet) also reflect this Wesleyan teaching, that the experiences of conver- sion and sanctification are thought of as the “beginning of faith” and the “end or object of faith”. The third stanza emphasizes the truth that the Spirit of God indwells the tem- plate or body of each believer, while the fourth stanza anticipates the glorious culmina- tion of our faith when “we cast our crowns before Thee, lost in wonder, love and praise.” Although Christians may have differences of interpretation regarding the doctrine of sanctification, we can agree on this basic truth: It ought to be a normal de- sire for each believer to grow in the grace of our Lord. Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heav’n, to earth come down; fix in us Thy humbling dwelling; all Thy faithful mercies crown. Jesus, Thou art all compassion; pure, unbounded love Thou art; visit us with Thy salvation; enter ev’ry trembling heart. Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit into ev’ry troubled breast! Let us all in Thee inherit; let us find that second rest. Take away our bent to sinning, Alpha and Omega be; end of faith, as its beginning, set our hearts at liberty. Come, almighty to deliver, let us all Thy life receive; suddenly return, and never, nevermore Thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve Thee as Thy hosts above, pray and praise Thee without ceasing, glory in Thy perfect love. Finish the Thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be; let us see Thy great salvation perfectly restored in Thee. Changed from glory into glory, till heav’n we take our place, till we cast our crowns before Thee, lost in wonder, love and praise. For Today: John 3:14-21; Philippians 1:6; Colossians 1:28; 1 John 3:11-24 God’s love must dominate our hearts, minds, and wills. Pray that this will become increasingly true in your life. • 14. 14 Christian Young Adults Fellowship TRUST AND OBEY John H. Sammis, 1846-1919 But Samuel replied, “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” (1 Samuel 15:22) L ife can often be a restless, disrupted existence until we give ourselves wholeheartedly to something beyond ourselves and follow and obey it supremely. Such implicit trust in God’s great love and wisdom with a sincere desire to follow His leading should be every Christian’s goal. Our will- ingness to trust and obey is always the first step toward God’s blessings in our lives. In 1886 Daniel B. Towner, director of the music department at Moody Bible Institute, was leading the music for evangelist D. L. Moody’s series of meetings in Brockton, Massachusetts. A young man rose to give a testimony, saying “I am not quite sure—but I am going to trust, and I am going to obey.” Mr. Towner jotted down his statement and sent it to the Rev. J. H. Sammis, a Presbyterian minister and later a teacher at Moody, who wrote the present five stanzas. Salvation if God’s responsibility. Our responsibility is to trust in that salvation and then to obey its truths. “Trust and Obey” presents a balanced view of a believer’s trust in Christ’s redemptive work, and it speaks of the re- sulting desire to obey Him and do His will in our daily lives. Then, and only then, do we experience real peace and joy. When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, what a glory He sheds on our way! While we do His good will He abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey. Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies, but His smile quickly drives it away; not a doubt nor a fear, not a sigh nor a tear, can abide while we trust and obey. Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share, but our toil He doth richly repay; not a grief nor a loss, not a frown nor a cross, but is blest if we trust and obey. But we never can prove the delights of His love until all on the altar we lay, for the favor He shows and the joy He bestows are for them who will trust and obey. Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet, or we’ll walk by His side in the way; what He says we will do, where He sends we will go— Never fear, only trust and obey. Chorus: Trust and obey—for there’s no other way to be happy in Je- sus—but to trust and obey. For Today: Psalm 37:3-5; John 8:31; John 14:23; James 2:14-26; 1 John 2:6 Experience the glory and abiding presence of Christ as you determine to trust Him more completely and obey His leading more fully in all that you do. The people who get that person’s belong- ings or money after he or she dies are the heirs. God, too, has made up a will and named his heirs. “God promised every- thing to the Son as an inheritance,” says Hebrews 1:2. In the end, Jesus will have all things under his control and owner- ship—all natural resources, all govern- mental power, all human intelligence, all the riches of the earth. Everything will be under his authority and command. And while Jesus doesn’t have to share the inheritance with anyone, he will! Romans 8:17 calls us “co-heirs with Christ” (NIV). Jesus will not keep his inheritance to himself. He has promised that he will share all he inherits with any- one who will trust him. Scripture says that God’s children will inherit home in heav- en, an eternal body made for us by God himself, all God’s promises, and all the good things of heaven. Someday each one of us will leave this earth and let go of everyone we have loved and everything we have enjoyed. We’ll be left with only our eternal inheritance. But we will not be disappointed. It will be everything we’ve anticipated and more. DISCUSSION STARTERS What kind of things do people inherit from other people? Wills go into effect only after death. On a spiritual level, whose death put our inheritance into effect? Day 7 YOUR INHERITANCE You are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir. GALATIANS 4:7 Since we are his chil- dren, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. ROMANS 8:17 The Spirit is God’s guar- antee that he will give us the inheritance he prom- ised and that he has pur- chased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him. • 15. 50 Christian Young Adults Fellowship Have you ever noticed how some salad dressings separate in the bottle? The vinegar is heavier so it settles in the bottom, while the lighter oil and seasonings sit on top. When we shake it up, it comes out mixed together. But if it sits for a while again, it will separate again. Here on earth, we have bodies and souls that are intertwined. But the day is coming when our bodies and souls will separate. When we die, our bodies will become lifeless shells. But we will continue to exist as souls—either with Jesus in heaven or separated from him in hell. The Bible says that when the be- liever’s soul leaves his or her body, this person is immediately “at home with the Lord.” While there is much we don’t understand about heaven, we do know that when we’re there, we’ll feel like we’ve finally arrived at home. We’ll be very content here as souls without bodies. But we won’t be like that forever. As great as it will be in heaven after we die, God has something even better in mind for our eternal future. He will not leave our dead bodies in the ground forev- er—he will raise up our bodies from the dead. But our new bodies will be so much better than our old ones —they’ll be given a divine makeo- ver so they’ll be perfect and completely pleasing to God. Our souls and bodies will be reunited to live forever in the new heaven and new earth. We will live with Christ forever—with glorified bodies and souls. DISCUSSION STARTERS What does it mean to feel “at home” somewhere? What are some places where you feel most at home? Jesus had glorified body—like ours will be someday—when he rose from the dead. What do we know about his body from things he did after he rose from the dead? (See Luke 24:13-53 and John 20-21.) How can it give you hope now, while you’re here on earth, to know that your soul will never die? Day 6 BODIES AND SOULS I long, yes, I faint with longing to enter the courts of the LORD. With my whole being, body, and soul, I will shout joyfully to the liv- ing God. PSALM 84:2 Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell. MATTHEW 10:28 We are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord. 2 CORINTHIANS 5: 8 15 Celebration Guide 2022 WOUNDED FOR ME W. G. Ovens, 1870-1945 (verse 1) Gladys W. Roberts, 1888-? (verses 2-5) To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an exam- ple that you should follow in His steps. (1 Peter 2:21) Death by crucifixion was one of the worst forms of dying. No Roman citizen was ever crucified; this horrible death was reserved only for Rome’s enemies. The Roman scourge was a most dreadful instrument of torture and suffering. It was made of sinews of oxen, and sharp bones were inter-twisted among the sinews so that every time the lash came down upon a body, these pieces of bone inflicted fearful lacerations and literally tore off chunks of flesh from the person’s bones. This is what Christ endured in accom- plishing our redemption. But the physical suffering was not the worst. Rather, the weight of human sin and the separation from God the Father because of His wrath against sin were the real causes of the Savior’s death. But simply knowing about Christ’s sufferings and death is not enough. We must personally appropriate this to our own lives. We must say, “It was for me!” We must allow the Holy Spirit to do in us subjectively all that Christ has done for us objectively. Then, after we have experienced this re- demptive work in our lives, we must humbly, lovingly, and thoughtfully “follow in His steps” and seek to restore others. The five stanzas of this thoughtful hymn cover the whole story of redemption, from the Savior’s suffering to His second coming. When this hymn is sung, then, all of the verses must be used; none can be deleted. Start softly and slowly and gradually build to a thrilling climax - “O how I praise Him—He’s coming for me!” Wounded for me, wounded for me, there on the cross He was wounded for me; gone my transgressions, and now I am free, all because Jesus was wounded for me. Dying for me, dying for me, there on the cross He was dying for me; now in His death my redemption I see, all because Jesus was dying for me. Risen for me, risen for me, up from the grave He has risen for me; now ever- more from death’s sting I am free, all because Jesus has risen for me. Living for me, living for me, up in the skies He is living for me; daily He’s pleading and praying for me, all because Jesus is living for me. Coming for me, coming for me, one day to earth He is coming for me; then with what joy His dear face I shall see; O how I praise Him—He’s coming for me! For Today: Psalm 65:3; 103:12; Isaiah 53; Ephesians 2:5 Let you soul rejoice as you review the complete redemption Christ has provided for you. Sing this hymn as you go realizing that—
  • 16. 16 Christian Young Adults Fellowship HOW GREAT THOU ART! English words by Stuart K. Hine, 1899- Every day I will praise You and extol Your name for ever and ever. Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom. (Psalm 145:2, 3) T oday’s inspiring hymn of praise and adoration reminds us of God’s unlimited power and love in creation and redemption. Although written in the past centu- ry, the hymn has become familiar to congregations just since the close of World War II. It especially became an international favorite after the Billy Graham Evangelis- tic Team used it in their crusades during the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. The original text was written by a Swedish pastor, Carl Boberg, in 1886. While visiting a beautiful country estate, Boberg was caught in a sudden thunderstorm. The awesome and violent lightning and thunder quickly ended, leaving clear brilliant sunshine and the calm, sweet singing of the birds in the trees. Falling on his knees in awe and adoration of Almighty God, the pastor wrote nine stanzas of praise. Swedish congregations began to sing his lines to one of their old folk tunes. The text was later translated into German and Russian and ultimately into English by the Reverend S. K. Hine and his wife, English missionaries to the people of Ukraine. When war broke out in 1939, it was necessary for the Hines to return in Britain, where Mr. Hine added the fourth stanza to this hymn. These four stanzas by Stuart Hine have since ministered and inspired God’s people worldwide: O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds Thy hands have made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy pow’r thru- out the universe displayed! When thru the woods and forest glades I wander and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees, when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur and hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze. And when I think that God, His son not sparing, sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in—That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin! When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then I shall bow in humble adoration and there pro- claim, my God how great Thou art! Refrain: Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee; how great Thou art, how great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee; how great Thou art, how great Thou art! For Today: Deuteronomy 3:24; Psalm 48:1; Isaiah 40:26, 28; Romans 1:20 Take time to think once again about the unfathomable greatness of God and His won- derful redeeming love for each of us. O Store Gud tune Swedish Medley Then sings my soul , my Sav - ior God , to Thee; How great Thou art , how great Thou art ! 49 Celebration Guide 2022 H ave you ever given an older woman your seat or listen to an older man tell stories about his childhood? Have you ever invited an older couple to join you for a meal or asked for advice from a grandparent or mentor? Whether you have or not, do you think these actions are just good, old-fashioned manners, or are they more than that? Showing respect and giving honor to older people are more than good manners; they are based on God’s Word and honor God him- self. The respect we show (or don’t show) to older people is a window into the respect (or lack of respect) we have for God. We show respect in our body language— the way we sit, stand up straight, and look an older person in the eye when he or she speaks. We avoid using disrespectful tones of voice. We show interest on what the person has to say rather than ridi- culing or simply tuning it out. These are the ways we show respect to older people and, in doing so, show respect for God. As we grow in our respect for the Lord, our growth should show itself in respect and honor for these people he has made in his image and put in our lives for a purpose. Any disregard—like rolling our eyes at what older people say or ignoring their requests or instruc- tions—reveals that we think we are smarter and more with it than they are, and that we think their opinions, preferences, and experi- ences have little value. But when we seek to brighten the lives of older people by giving them the respect they deserve, we honor what they have to offer us and the world. DISCUSSION STARTERS What are some ways God has blessed you through having older people in your life? How have you benefited from their experience, wisdom, and love? Why do you think older people tend to be disrespected in our society? How does it make any person feel to be ignored, ridiculed, or forgotten? How could you be a blessing to some older people you know? Day 5 SHOWING RESPECT Stand up in the presence of the elderly, and show respect for the aged. Fear your God. I am the LORD. LEVITICUS 19:32 The glory of the young is their strength; the gray hair of experience is the splendor of the old. PROVERBS 20:29 Listen to your father, who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old. PROVERBS 23:22
  • 17. 48 Christian Young Adults Fellowship Forgiveness is not easy. When someone hurts you, it’s hard to resist becoming resentful or trying to make the other person pay. But when that person does the same thing to you a second time, it is even harder to forgive. You feel like that person is not at all sorry and is taking advantage of you. The religious leaders in Jesus’ day taught that you should forgive someone two times, but if the person hurts you a third time, you were not obligated to forgive. So when Peter suggested that perhaps you should for- give up to seven times, he thought he was go- ing far beyond what could be expected of any- body. He thought it only reasonable to set some limits on forgiveness to avoid being tak- en advantage of. And he was sure Jesus would give him a pat on the back for his generosity. But Jesus said he should forgive not seven times but seventy times seven times. Jesus said to keep on forgiving beyond what is reasonable. In other words, forgive others the way you’ve been forgiven—because God has forgiven you far more than seven times. He’s forgiven too many times to count! You see, when God offers us forgiveness, he is opening himself up to being taken advantage of. And he keeps on forgiving. To be in Christ is to live in an atmos- phere of overflowing forgiveness. And our willingness—or our resistance— to generously forgive others reveals whether or not we’re really breathing in that air. DISCUSSION STARTERS How does it feel when someone hurts you the same way more than once? What do you think Jesus meant when he said we should forgive seventy times seven times? How can seeing God as a generous forgiver help us to forgive those who have hurt us? Day 4 SEVENTY TIMES SEVEN Peter came to him and asked, “Lord, how of- ten should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?” “No, not sev- en times,” Jesus re- plied, “but seventy times seven!” MATTHEW 18:21-22 Where is another God like you, who pardons the guilt of the rem- nant, overlooking the sins of his special peo- ple? You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing un- failing love. MICAH 7:18 17 Celebration Guide 2022 WONDERFUL GRACE OF JESUS Words and music by Haldor Lillenas, 1885-1959 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that thought He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that you thought His poverty might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9) T he wonderful grace of Jesus will be the theme that will echo through- out the corridors of heaven during all eternity. It should also be the joyful exclamation of every Christian now whenever he thinks of Cal- vary and the deep love of our Savior. “Wonderful Grace of Jesus” is one of the most inspiring hymns in our hymnals and it has been used extensively by both choirs and congrega- tions since it was written and composed by Haldor Lillenas in 1918. Born in Norway, Mr. Lillenas came to the United States as a child. He married Bertha Mae Wilson, a songwriter also, and they traveled together extensively, fur- nishing songs and choirs for many of the leading song leaders in the country, including the noted Charles Alexander. Mr. Alexander found this hymn, among the approximately 4,000 that Lillenas wrote, to be particularly useful as a mass choir selection in the great crusades in the early years of this centu- ry. And the song has remained popular ever since. The reminder of Christ’s “all sufficient grace” that is truly “deeper than the mighty rolling sea” and “higher than the mountain” still moves us to stand in awe each time we sing it in a church service. Wonderful grace of Jesus, greater than all my sin; how shall my tongue de- scribe it, where shall its praise begin? Taking away my burden, setting my spirit free, for the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me. Wonderful grace of Jesus, reaching to all the lost, by it I have been par- doned saved to the uttermost; chains have been torn asunder, giving me liberty, for the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me. Wonderful grace of Jesus, reaching the most defiled, by its transforming power making him God’s dear child, purchasing peace and heaven for all eternity—and the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me. Chorus: Wonderful the matchless grace of Jesus, deeper than the mighty rolling sea; higher than the mountain, sparkling like a fountain, all sufficient grace for even m; broader than the scope of my transgressions, greater far than all my sin and shame; O magnify the precious name of Jesus, praise His name! For Today: Acts 15:11; Titus 3:7; Hebrews 4:16; 1 Peter 5:10 Contemplate again the “scope of your transgressions” and the forgiveness and love of Christ as He stretches out His hand to you. Praise His precious name as you go singing—
  • 18. 18 Christian Young Adults Fellowship LIVING FOR JESUS Thomas O. Chisholm, 1866-1960 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—which is your spiritual worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. (Romans 12:1, 2) F or the Christian, a foremost priority must be to live for Christ and to seek first His kingdom (Matthew 6:33). That does not line up with all the talk we hear today about self-realization. The Christian, however, knows that we were creat- ed by God that we might glorify Him. Therefore, we should not live to please ourselves but rather to exalt and serve our Lord. “My dearest treasure the light of His smile”—the ultimate goal of our lives. “Living for Jesus” was written in 1917 by Thomas Chisholm at the request of the composer, Harold Lowden, who had used his tune two years earlier with another text. Lowden, however, was not satisfied with the union of his tune with the earlier text and wrote Mr. Chisholm, suggesting the title “Living for Jesus” for the new hymn set- ting. Chisholm felt very inadequate for the task, but within two weeks the words were completed. Thomas Chisholm had been an editor, a schoolteacher, and a Methodist min- ister before ill health forced him to begin a less strenuous life as an insurance salesman. His favorite endeavor had always been the writing of poetry, and he continued to do this all through his 94 years. “I have greatly desired,” he said, “that each hymn or poem might send some definite message to the hearts for whom it was written.” Though hum- ble in spirit and frail in health, Chisholm found that writing encouraging words such as these for God’s people to sing was his “pathway of blessings.” Living for Jesus a life that is true, striving to please Him an all that I do, yielding allegiance, glad-hearted and free—this is the pathway of blessing for me. Living for Jesus who died in my place, bearing on Calv’ry my sin and dis- grace—such love constrains me to answer His call, follow His leading and give Him my all. Living for Jesus thru earth’s little while, my dearest treasure the light of His smile, seeking the lost ones He died to redeem, bringing the weary to find rest in Him. Chorus: O Jesus, Lord and Savior, I give myself to Thee, for Thou in Thine atonement didst give Thyself for me. I own no other Master—my heart shall be Thy throne: My life I give, henceforth to live, O Christ, for Thee alone. For Today: Mark 12:33; Romans 6:13; 2 Corinthians 4:10, 11 Tomorrow is God’s secret, but today is your opportunity to live cooperatively with and for Him. Make it “God’s today.” Live this day to glorify His Son in every possible way. Sing as you go— 47 Celebration Guide 2022 Have you ever heard someone described as a scapegoat? It’s someone who takes the blame that really belongs to someone else. For example, when the teacher demands who turned all the desks upside down while she was gone and one student steps up and says he did it, when really a large group of stu- dents participated, he’s the scapegoat. The Bible says that all of us have sinned. We’re all guilty. And the punishment for sin is death. But God has provided a scape- goat—someone who will take on himself all the blame for our sin. He gave us a visible picture of this in the Old Testament observance of the annual Day of Atonement. On that day, two goats were chosen. One goat was killed to pro- vide a picture of the death of the substitute for sin. The priest put his hand on the other goat— the scapegoat—and confessed the people’s sins. By doing this, he ceremonially transferred the sin to the goat. Then the scapegoat was sent out into the wilderness to take the sin away from the community. When Jesus died, he became the scapegoat for all the wrongs we’ve done. Like the goat in Old Testament times, he was inno- cent but he took the blame for our sin on him- self. And through his death, he carried our sin far away so that we don’t have to live under a heavy weight of guilt and shame. Just as the guilt for sin was placed on the scapegoat and it went into the wilderness never to be seen again, so Christ has taken on our sin and removed it so that it can never be thrown back in our faces. Now we can enjoy the complete forgiveness if God. DISCUSSION STARTERS Have you ever observed a person or group being made into a scapegoat? In what ways is Jesus as our scapegoat better than the scapegoat the Israelites had in Old Testament times? What difference does it make in your life to truly understand that your sin is gone? Day 3 THE SCAPEGOAT He will lay both of his hands on the goat’s head and confess over it all the wickedness, rebel- lion, and sins of the peo- ple of Israel. In this way, he will transfer the peo- ple’s sins to the head of the goat. Then a man specially chosen for the task will drive the goat into the wilderness. As the goat goes into the wilderness, it will carry all the people’s sins up- on itself into a desolate land. LEVITICUS 16:21-22 He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. PSALM 103:3
  • 19. 46 Christian Young Adults Fellowship S ome people are pickier about cleanli- ness than others. While some of us can live in a messy room or eat in an un- sanitary kitchen, others can’t. Cleanliness is very important to God. Not so much personal cleanliness, but spiritual cleanliness. God can- not tolerate the filthiness of sin in his presence. To help us understand this, in Old Testament times God made himself at home in the Holy of Holies, a special room in the Jew- ish Temple that could only be entered by the high priest once a year. And even the high priest could enter only after he had cleansed himself carefully. God instructed the people of Israel to do an annual cleaning—a day set aside to cleanse God’s holy dwelling place— by making sacrifices for their sin. It wasn’t dust and dirt that God wanted cleaned out. It was the uncleanness of his people’s sinful attitudes and actions. On that solemn day, the people of Israel fasted and prayed to God for forgiveness while the priest offered sacrifices. The sacrific- es would cover the impurity of their sin for another year. But it was no permanent solution to the problem of sin. That special day fore- shadowed and anticipated a greater, permanent cleansing of God’s people and his dwelling place—the hearts and lives of believers. The day of cleansing to come would be accom- plished by a special priest—Jesus—who did not need a cleansing ceremony. He was already perfectly clean. Christ’s death took care of our sin problem for good. He washed away our sin with his blood so we can become holy enough to live in God’s home with him forever. DISCUSSION STARTERS How much mess and dirt can you tolerate? Why do you think God set aside a special day of cleansing for his peo- ple? This special day was a time to reflect and mourn over sin. Would you and your family benefit from a set aside for this? Day 2 CLEANING DAY On the tenth day of the ap- pointed month in early au- tumn, you must deny your- selves… On that day offer- ings of purification will be made for you, and you will be purified in the LORD’S presence from all your sins. LEVITICUS 16:29-30 It’s your sins that have cut you off from God. Because of your sins, he has turned away and will not listen anymore. ISAIAH 59:2 Unlike those other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices every day. They did this for their own sins first and then for the sins of the people. But Jesus did this once for all when he offered himself as the sacri- fice for the people’s sins. Reinagle, c.1830 Jesus Christ our Lord we pray, that our life shall be Living channels of faith and love, Christian unity 45 Celebration Guide 2022 M ost airplanes and submarines have an escape hatch. It’s a door that opens to provide a way out in an emergency. Similarly, many legal contracts have what is called an escape clause. It de- scribes a way out of the contract without hav- ing to fulfill the agreement. Some people think that to pray passionately for something and then to follow it with “if it be your will” is giving God an escape clause—a way out of doing what we’re asking him to do. But saying “if it be your will” is not giving God an escape clause or helping him save face. It is a humble recognition that we can’t presume to know what God will do. It’s a commitment to trust God regardless of what he does. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego didn’t pretend that they knew what God would do in their situation when they were thrown into a blazing hot furnace, and there is no evidence that they cried out God telling him what they thought should do. Because they knew God and trusted God, they be- lieved he would do what was right, even if it resulted in their death. Their commitment was to remain true to God no matter what. They knew God needs no escape clause. He can be trusted to always do what is right. DISCUSSION STARTERS Have you ever felt trapped inside a space and in need of a way out? Which do you think would have required more genuine faith for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abedne- go —to believe God would save them from a fiery death or to commit to love him even if he didn’t? Read about some people of faith in Hebrews 11:29-39. What does the list show us about what faith looks like when God saves and when he does not? Day 1 ESCAPE CLAUSE Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the LORD! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! HABAKKUK 3:17-18 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied, “O Nebu- chadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Maj- esty. But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.” DANIEL 3:16-18

PANGRIKEP A TOKAR (Naulimek a Panagmeditasyon) - oOo - I f you’ve rarely read and discussed God’s Word together as a family, it can be awkward at first. But that initial awkwardness fades as conversations are sparked and understanding deepens. We have a treasure to pass to our children – the Bible, which contains God’s message to us and the answers to life’s greatest questions. Because it is so im- portant to us, we want to talk about it. The one-week devotion is designed for everyone around the table to share and interact with it. You might choose to have a different family mem- bers read the various verses, and you can encourage conversations by discuss- ing the questions at the end of each devotion. The first question is answerable for family members of all ages, elementary and up. It is designed to draw fam- ily members in and to get everyone talking about their own thoughts and expe- rience. The next two questions are more thought provoking and in some cases more personal. Paul wrote, “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10: 31) I’m praying for you as you seek to glorify God around your dinner table – that He will be pleased, and that your family or group will have some laughs, perhaps shed some tears, and grow together toward God. – Nancy Guthrie, NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE 21 Celebration Guide 2022 Chorus: Bless, O Christ, we humbly pray, this our Christian unity; So our faith and love shall be following your way.
