VARNELL — All of the success Coahulla Creek High School’s boys basketball team has
enjoyed this year might have been encapsulated in one play that the Colts’ Andrew Fisher
made in Friday’s 71-38 win over Region 6-3A opponent Gordon Central on senior night.
Fisher, the thinking man’s player with a 2,100 SAT score, wasn’t thinking selfishly when
he found himself spotted up perfectly under the basket with the ball. But instead of
tossing in an easy two points, he dished off to Conner Meyer for a layup.
Fisher’s unselfish play permeated the whole Colts squad as they closed the regular season
with a 14-11 record overall and evened their mark at 8-8 in the region.
While picking up win No. 14 may not be cause for celebration for every coach, the Colts’
Matthew Queener found plenty of significance in the win over Gordon Central (5-19, 4-
12). In the school’s three previous seasons of existence, the boys basketball team had just
13 total wins — including just one in the inaugural campaign.
“Every single little thing had to go our way for us to win that one game,” Queener
recalled. “The next year, we won two games. Last year, we got to 10 wins. I try not to get
too introspective. But I’m humbled by how far we’ve come. I’m proud of all the kids
who’ve come before these guys, too.”
Tyler Phillips led the Colts with 21 points, Alex Fisher tossed in 17 and J.R. Laird
rounded out the leaders with 13. Andrew Fisher — who was honored as a senior —
scored just eight points, but he hauled in eight rebounds. And he played smart, as did his
teammates.
“First of all, everyone was excited and played hard for Andrew on senior night,” Queener
said. “If we hear one thing from coaches and fans it’s that we are by far the most
unselfish team they’ve seen from top to bottom.”
Andrew Fisher agreed, saying for the Colts “it’s not about getting an open shot, but the
best shot.”
