Fractures of the big bone of the wrist are known as Distal
Radius Fractures. These are the most frequently seen
fractures that affect the human body. These fractures can be
of various patterns and types that need different treatments.
Qualifying as the most painful fracture in the arm, distal
radius fractures need proper care.
If such a fracture heals in an improper position, it often
results in arthritis, loss of function, stiffness, and wrist pain.
The wrist, being an important foundation of the arm, needs
to heal in proper position. The hand function might be compromised and the fingers might
stiffen if the wrist heals in an inappropriate position. Patients whose distal radius fractures
heal in improper position usually require multiple surgeries for (a) correcting the deformity,
and (b) releasing the fingers in order to regain motion.
Scaphoid Fractures are severe injuries as the scaphoid can be described as the worst arm
bone to break. The scaphoid, a vital wrist bone, is subjected to
high stress and has poor supply of blood. These fractures have a
tendency of not healing, going on to non-union. Often a part of
the bone dies, i.e. avascular necrosis or heart attack of the
bone takes place. If these fractures do not heal, the wrist
inevitably starts suffering fromarthritis.
Usually, scaphoid fractures do not show up on initial x-rays.
They might take a fortnight in order to be visible on x-rays. An
MRI scan is able to diagnose scaphoid fractures within a day.
