Agenda
• Primary packaging wilderness
• Barcodes hidden in the trees
• Climate change in symbols
• Is the tide changing in secondary packaging
• Next Destinations for late stage symbol marking
- DotCode
- Web URI
17

Primary (unit) Packaging Wilderness
• There’s countless possible substrates and packaging methods all
requiring a GS1 symbology to enable trade.
- plastic medical devices, paper land waste bag, metal paint cans,
glass beer bottles, paper board tobacco pack, PVC pipe, …
• These symbols can be pre-printed on packaging or printed at the
moment of manufacturing on the primary unit or it’s packaging with
many possible printing technologies.
- laser, thermal transfer, continuous ink jet, thermal ink jet,
print & apply labels, …
• There’s multiple manufacturing methods to produce the unit
effectively
- one piece flow, batch, mass production, continuous flow, …
18
© 2018 GS1 US All Rights Reserved
Primary (unit) Packaging Wilderness
• Fortunately there’s only a few main symbols GTIN-8, GTIN-12, GTIN-13, GS1
DataMatrix, GS1 DataBar and DotCode
- Manufactures select the symbol that works for their sector and leverage the
GS1 Gen-Spec for compliance
• Even with this wildly vary topology three common themes have emerged across
the primary packaging part of the supply chain.
1. Production Efficiency
2. Shop floor Connectivity
3. Verification
19

Primary (unit) Packaging Wilderness
• Production Efficiency
- Manufactures are leveraging barcode symbols to enable production
- shop orders, internal batch control, case tracking, …
• Shop floor Connectivity
- ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system
- + production line controls
- + printing, weighing, scanning, vision
- + smart devices
• Verification
- linear scanners and imagines cameras verifying correct symbol data and key
features of the unit

Barcodes hidden in the trees
• Through the clever use of a brands packaging the artwork can the change
through subtle changes to the brightness and intensity of colors allowing for
hidden watermarks that become machine readable symbols
- GTIN-8, GTIN-12, GTIN-13 (UPC/EAN)
- QR and DataMatrix codes
• This technology can easy the checkout process as multiple UPC/EAN can be
embedded in the artwork.
• The Brand owner now has more space to promote the brand.
21
© 2018 GS1 US All Rights Reserved
Climate change in symbols
• By adding Thermo-chromic inks a symbol can now be a temperature monitor.
- This one way indicator helps ensure temperature sensitive items have not
been compromised (food, pharmaceuticals, …)
- Thanks to the error handling capability of Datamatix 2D symbols the
information (data capture) is still accessible.
22

Tide Change in Secondary (case) Packaging
• Many manufactures are moving from ITF-14 to GS1-128, primarily due to the
supply chain advantages (an AI enable symbol (imbedded batch and expires))
• The move to GS1-128 generally requires on production line symbol creation.
- Print & apply labels traditionally have been the only solution due to the “C”
grade (more expensive then preprinted or inline printed ITF-14 (D))
• 2016 saw a change to the ISO/IEC 15416 verification standard, the grade is now
be computed as an interpolated value, rounded to the nearest 0.1 in between
grade levels
• Verification equipment suppliers implemented the ISO/IEC 15416 (2016) in 2018
23
© 2018 GS1 US All Rights Reserved
Tide Change in Secondary (case) Packaging
• In 2016 Markem-Imaje developed a high opacity Hotmelt (Touch Dry) ink 5x55
with the goal of meeting the Contrast grade in the previous ISO/IEC Spec.
- Approximately 5% fell below a “C”
- With the current ISO/IEC requirement the 5x55 exceeds the bar.
• Ensure ongoing compliance with high resolution direct print is a challenge.
• Multiple vision inspection companies have introduce Barcode scoring as an
indicator of the symbols quality.
• These three factors now challenge the label and now make high resolution direct
print a reliable, lower cost alternative.

Next Destinations for symbol marking & AIDC
• FIT (Fighting Illicit Trade) Leveraging 2D barcodes and introducing DotCode to
the GS1 community
- Barcode capable of being printed with current technologies up to 1000
unit/minute
- Primarily printing technologies CIJ and Laser
- Current planned to debut in 2019 GS1 General Specification
- Used in the EU Tobacco industry and gaining acceptance in some beverage
markets for taxation and control of illicit trade.
25

Next Destinations for symbol marking & AIDC
• Web URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) focuses on the simplification of on-pack
primary codes with a single identification approach that will be able to support
both product identification and a link to online material.
- The short-term goal of this work is to reduce the need for multiple codes on
packs, while ensuring that we develop a glide path with industry toward a
future where a single 2D barcode could serve the needs of all parties.
• To make this 2D Web URI symbol a reality a leap in technology will be required
for the high speed packaging/manufacturing line.
- Variable information like date/weight/batch/… will need to be encoded into
the URI when the product is produced.
- This is a significant challenge with product moving at 6m/s or 1800
unit/minute.

Next Destinations for symbol marking & AIDC
• Digital Laser marking can print 2D and 1D GS1 symbols at ~1m/s
• The technology can be thought of as an array of laser beams being digitally turn
on and off to form Text, Graphics or GS1 Symbols
• The technology leverages laser sensitive chemistry that has been applied to the
substrates surface as a patch for the laser to react with.
27
© 2018 GS1 US All Rights Reserved
Next Destinations for symbol marking & AIDC
• Digital SPI marking can print 2D and 1D GS1 symbols at >6m/s
• The technology can be thought of as a combination of drop on demand and
continuous ink jet
• The technology uses 64 streams of ink 16 mm high at 15 mm from product
• Markem-Imaje projects a 2020 introduction date.

  • 17. © 2018 GS1 US All Rights Reserved Agenda • Primary packaging wilderness • Barcodes hidden in the trees • Climate change in symbols • Is the tide changing in secondary packaging • Next Destinations for late stage symbol marking - DotCode - Web URI 17
  • 18. © 2018 GS1 US All Rights Reserved Primary (unit) Packaging Wilderness • There’s countless possible substrates and packaging methods all requiring a GS1 symbology to enable trade. - plastic medical devices, paper land waste bag, metal paint cans, glass beer bottles, paper board tobacco pack, PVC pipe, … • These symbols can be pre-printed on packaging or printed at the moment of manufacturing on the primary unit or it’s packaging with many possible printing technologies. - laser, thermal transfer, continuous ink jet, thermal ink jet, print & apply labels, … • There’s multiple manufacturing methods to produce the unit effectively - one piece flow, batch, mass production, continuous flow, … 18
  • 19. © 2018 GS1 US All Rights Reserved Primary (unit) Packaging Wilderness • Fortunately there’s only a few main symbols GTIN-8, GTIN-12, GTIN-13, GS1 DataMatrix, GS1 DataBar and DotCode - Manufactures select the symbol that works for their sector and leverage the GS1 Gen-Spec for compliance • Even with this wildly vary topology three common themes have emerged across the primary packaging part of the supply chain. 1. Production Efficiency 2. Shop floor Connectivity 3. Verification 19
  • 20. © 2018 GS1 US All Rights Reserved Primary (unit) Packaging Wilderness • Production Efficiency - Manufactures are leveraging barcode symbols to enable production - shop orders, internal batch control, case tracking, … • Shop floor Connectivity - ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system - + production line controls - + printing, weighing, scanning, vision - + smart devices • Verification - linear scanners and imagines cameras verifying correct symbol data and key features of the unit 20
  • 21. © 2018 GS1 US All Rights Reserved Barcodes hidden in the trees • Through the clever use of a brands packaging the artwork can the change through subtle changes to the brightness and intensity of colors allowing for hidden watermarks that become machine readable symbols - GTIN-8, GTIN-12, GTIN-13 (UPC/EAN) - QR and DataMatrix codes • This technology can easy the checkout process as multiple UPC/EAN can be embedded in the artwork. • The Brand owner now has more space to promote the brand. 21
  • 22. © 2018 GS1 US All Rights Reserved Climate change in symbols • By adding Thermo-chromic inks a symbol can now be a temperature monitor. - This one way indicator helps ensure temperature sensitive items have not been compromised (food, pharmaceuticals, …) - Thanks to the error handling capability of Datamatix 2D symbols the information (data capture) is still accessible. 22
  • 23. © 2018 GS1 US All Rights Reserved Tide Change in Secondary (case) Packaging • Many manufactures are moving from ITF-14 to GS1-128, primarily due to the supply chain advantages (an AI enable symbol (imbedded batch and expires)) • The move to GS1-128 generally requires on production line symbol creation. - Print & apply labels traditionally have been the only solution due to the “C” grade (more expensive then preprinted or inline printed ITF-14 (D)) • 2016 saw a change to the ISO/IEC 15416 verification standard, the grade is now be computed as an interpolated value, rounded to the nearest 0.1 in between grade levels • Verification equipment suppliers implemented the ISO/IEC 15416 (2016) in 2018 23
  • 24. © 2018 GS1 US All Rights Reserved Tide Change in Secondary (case) Packaging • In 2016 Markem-Imaje developed a high opacity Hotmelt (Touch Dry) ink 5x55 with the goal of meeting the Contrast grade in the previous ISO/IEC Spec. - Approximately 5% fell below a “C” - With the current ISO/IEC requirement the 5x55 exceeds the bar. • Ensure ongoing compliance with high resolution direct print is a challenge. • Multiple vision inspection companies have introduce Barcode scoring as an indicator of the symbols quality. • These three factors now challenge the label and now make high resolution direct print a reliable, lower cost alternative. 24
  • 25. © 2018 GS1 US All Rights Reserved Next Destinations for symbol marking & AIDC • FIT (Fighting Illicit Trade) Leveraging 2D barcodes and introducing DotCode to the GS1 community - Barcode capable of being printed with current technologies up to 1000 unit/minute - Primarily printing technologies CIJ and Laser - Current planned to debut in 2019 GS1 General Specification - Used in the EU Tobacco industry and gaining acceptance in some beverage markets for taxation and control of illicit trade. 25
  • 26. © 2018 GS1 US All Rights Reserved Next Destinations for symbol marking & AIDC • Web URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) focuses on the simplification of on-pack primary codes with a single identification approach that will be able to support both product identification and a link to online material. - The short-term goal of this work is to reduce the need for multiple codes on packs, while ensuring that we develop a glide path with industry toward a future where a single 2D barcode could serve the needs of all parties. • To make this 2D Web URI symbol a reality a leap in technology will be required for the high speed packaging/manufacturing line. - Variable information like date/weight/batch/… will need to be encoded into the URI when the product is produced. - This is a significant challenge with product moving at 6m/s or 1800 unit/minute. 26
  • 27. © 2018 GS1 US All Rights Reserved Next Destinations for symbol marking & AIDC • Digital Laser marking can print 2D and 1D GS1 symbols at ~1m/s • The technology can be thought of as an array of laser beams being digitally turn on and off to form Text, Graphics or GS1 Symbols • The technology leverages laser sensitive chemistry that has been applied to the substrates surface as a patch for the laser to react with. 27
  • 28. © 2018 GS1 US All Rights Reserved Next Destinations for symbol marking & AIDC • Digital SPI marking can print 2D and 1D GS1 symbols at >6m/s • The technology can be thought of as a combination of drop on demand and continuous ink jet • The technology uses 64 streams of ink 16 mm high at 15 mm from product • Markem-Imaje projects a 2020 introduction date. 28
