2. An estate-planning survey conducted by Harris Poll reveals that 64% of adults in the US don't have a
will.
Among those who don’t have a plan, about 27 said they don’t see an urgent need to make one, while 15%
said they do not need one at all. The study asked over 1,000 respondents whether they had estate-
planning documents in place, in case of an untimely death.
Lisa Honey, Rocket Lawyer's product marketing director, says that partly, it’s because a lot of people do
not like to think about death. She adds that many people also falsely believe that wills are only
necessary for those who have a multimillion-dollar estate.
For those who don't have a will or an estate plan, the state gets to decide where their assets go. In some
states, 50 percent of the assets are awarded to the spouse while 50 percent goes to the kids. In many
cases, this has caused some financial issues in families.
3. Will a Must in Both the Young and Old
Results show that most adults 18 years old and above have neglected to do the necessary. Data from the
same study reveals that a surprising 78 percent of millennials aged 18 to 36 and 64 percent of Gen-Xers
aged 37-52 do not have a will. Surprisingly, 81 percent of US adults 72 years old or older and 58 percent
of baby boomers aged 53 to 71 years old have estate-planning documents.
These results suggest that as people age, they realize the importance of having an estate plan. Experts
say, however, that it’s also important for younger people to prepare their wills. For adults who have
children, in particular, a will or an estate plan helps make sure that the children will be taken care of by
people which parents trust, in the event of their death.
Lawyers advise both the old and young to find time to get their end-of-life plans and documents in
order. A do-it-yourself will, for the meantime, is fine, especially when it’s unlikely for anyone to contest
it.
