1. JEANETTE WORMALD
Jeanette Wormald’s voice resonates with the essence of
Australia. Jeanette is a singer and songwriter — and her evocative
songs capture her passion for and understanding of the Australian
bush with a mastery few others have achieved.
Jeanette has spent considerable time working with Indigenous
communities in the deserts of Northern Territory and South
Australia, and is one of very few songwriters to celebrate
Indigenous languages in her lyrics. Since 1996, she has
collaborated closely with the Anangu people of Oak Valley in the
Maralinga Tjarutja lands and the Raukkan Ngarrindjeri community,
and has enormous respect for their strong spirituality and
connection to country. She spent six years living and working in
the Northern Territory – using music as a gateway to teach literacy
to disadvantaged young Indigenous adults in traditional
communities in and around Alice Springs.
Her rich life experiences have combined to inspire songs in her latest album – Inland Moon. The release has already
attracted widespread industry accolades and national radio support. And now Jeanette is beginning a new adventure -
relocating her life and music to tropical Far North Queensland.
Jeanette’s deep understanding of the bush and its people, and her use of music to carry their message across Australia
and to the world has led to many industry accolades including a State Music Industry Award in 1995 and a South Australia
Great Award in 2005 for her contribution to the arts and her work in promoting regional Australia. Her song writing skills
have also been recognised with invitations to write two songs for the national Tracks to Federation celebrations:
“Woomera – Dream Launcher” and “Yurin Kabi – Gathering Place”, as well as the theme song for the South Australian
Rural Women’s Gathering: “I’m a Rural Woman.”
