A motorcycle doesn’t just transport you
from A to B. It gives you access to a
total visceral and spiritual experience.
Where is here. I have been chosen
to be here. And then, I relax into speed.
I am not riding this motorcycle.
I am this motorcycle. —JEAN-PHILIPPE DEFAUT

I AM THIS MOTORCYCLE is an immersive experience
featuring large-scale portrait photography, conversations,
sculptures, archival ephemera and commissioned works.
The exhibition is an ongoing dialogue, a portrait story with
fellow motorcyclists and motorcycles: their rides, travels,
challenges, encounters, designs, engineering and evolution.

I AM THIS MOTORCYCLE launched in San Francisco at
Heron Arts in February 2016. The exhibition was extremely
well received. Opening night attendance exceeded 600.
The evening featured local partners: an artisan baker and
caterer, a brewery, a denim designer, a motorcycle designer
and a tea company serving Bourbon infused tea in piston
shaped shot glasses.

The event drew a diverse audience from many SF
communities: technology, design, the arts, music, film,
investment, venture capitalists, finance, advertising,
communications, food and beverage, and the motorcycle
community.

The spine of the project is a portrait story of
over 100 motorcyclists between London,
Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Portland and
San Francisco. Jean-Philippe is passionate
about motorcycles as well as people;
roadside conversations happen on a regular
basis and thus, the project continues to
grow as the journey unfolds…

I AM THIS MOTORCYCLE
JEAN-PHILIPPE DEFAUT is a photographer
and storyteller. Born to French parents
and raised in London, JP has always been
fascinated by people, their culture and
environments. His stories involve focusing on
a section of society and connecting individuals
through a common narrative. “People live
such interesting lives, I’m curious about what
drives them and I need to explore the why”.
Over the years, this question has connected him
to many individuals, through diverse projects
worldwide, who were willing to share stories,
anecdotes and often personal experiences.
Projects are launched through experience led
events that connect the audience as closely to
the subject’s environment as possible.
His photographic stories are created using both
plate and digital cameras and punctuated with
quotes and stories from conversations with
his subjects. JP has been a regular contributor
to a number of international publications:
The New York Times, the International Herald
Tribune, The Independent, The Times,
Art Review, W Magazine to name a few as
well as a number of commercial clients over
20 years.
