JEAN MERCIER, LL.L., D.E.S., PH.D.

Jean Mercier is professor at the Department of Political Science of l’Université Laval, where he
spent all his career, and where he was chairman of the Department from 1994 to 1997.
He has been invited as visiting scholar at the University of Toronto’s Centre for Environment,
the Virginia Polytechnic and State University Center for Public Administration and Policy, The
Ciudad del Saber, Panama, The Foreign Affairs College in Beijing, and The End-of-life Care
Research Group at the Vrije Univesiteit in Brussels. He also held the Chaire Vergniaud en
gouvernance territoriale du développement durable at l’Institut d’études politiques of Université
Bordeaux, in 2009.
A recipient of twenty research grants over the years, he is member of several research teams,
and his current (2015) research interests focus on sustainable urban transport, greenhouse gas
reduction policies, assisted death policies and interpretive methods, as applied, among others,
to cinematographic material.
Jean Mercier has authored four books and published regularly a substantial number of articles.

Earlier in his career, Jean Mercier had received a law degree (LL.L) from Université de
Montréal, a D.E.S. (Diplôme d’études supérieures) from the Sorbonne, and a PH.D. from the
Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University.
