To whom it may concern,
One of my former supervisees asked me to write a letter of reference for her, and I am
more than happy to do so because Ms. Jean-Marie Evans proved to be a valuable asset
to our agency when she worked as a volunteer assistant English Language Instructor
between October 2014 and March 2015.
As a program director at LearningWorks, a small not-for-profit agency focused on
providing educational opportunities for various at-risk populations, I direct an English
Language Program (ELP) designed to assist adult New Mainers learn the English
language. I supervise approximately 40 volunteer instructors and individual tutors who
assist me to meet our students’ needs at four separate skill levels of English language
acquisition.
Ms. Evans presents herself as a very positive, enthusiastic, cheerful, and engaging
personality who was highly motivated to assist our immigrant student body to advance
their English language skills. She proved valuable to her lead instructors by following
their instructions during class and to adding her own contributions to class discussions.
She also volunteered to tutor a female African member of the class on a one-to-one basis
each week. Dependability and punctuality is a strict requirement for all volunteers, and I
do not recall any incidents of Ms. Evans ever being late or undependable; on the contrary,
she was very proactive in announcing to me any upcoming absence.
Ms. Evans’ supervising lead instructor reported that Ms. Evans often encouraged students
to try harder, but gently not in an overbearing manner. She frequently took initiative in
class without having to await her supervisor’s instructions; intuitively she knew how to
be useful to both the teacher and students as well often by making unsolicited suggestions
for improvements in both lesson delivery and student performance.
I offer Ms. Evans my highest recommendation for any position for which she feels
qualified, and I would be more than happy to provide anyone interested in hiring her with
a telephone reference as well. Please call me if any additional information is needed
about her.
Sincerely,
