1. $1,300. Jillian wanted to get
involved because of their grand-mother
who passed away from
cancer.
She said to be a team captain
she needed to gather a group of at
least 10 people, go to all the meet-ings,
create a fundraiser, have each
member raise a minimum of $100,
and the teams must consist of one
cancer survivor.
“We are constantly walking
around the track because each lap
informs people that cancer never
sleeps,” she said. “Each team must
have one person constantly walk-ing
throughout the night.”
Jillian said that she would be
staying at the school until 6 a.m.
Sunday, when the event finishes.
In addition, teams must wear a
certain color, which represents the
theme of event – “Color the World
With Hope.”
During the luminaria ceremony,
which started approximately at 10
p.m., white bags surrounded the
track with a small light inside and
a message written on the outside
in memory of someone who died
from or is fighting cancer. Also,
there was a special survivor cere-mony
during the opening ceremo-ny,
where each person had their
name read.
Wayne Mayor Chris Vergano
said that he was happy to be there
and this is always a great event. He
acknowledged all the kids who
helped organize and was pleased
to see that the community was
heavily involved.
“It is amazing how many cancer
survivors I know,” Vergano said.
Beverly Provido-Sahu, director
of special events for the American
Cancer Society, echoed Vergano’s
comments.
“We got donations from local
businesses,” she said.
She was also happy to see a lot
of the community getting involved
and have a big turn-out.
Provido-Sahu said that the
ACS starts planning for the event
in July.
“We expect to raise more mon-ey
than the $88,000 that is shown
on the website,” she said.
Denise Andersen, vice president
of the Northern New Jersey
Region for ACS, said that the
Relay for Life is growing every year
in Wayne “and it’s only in the sixth
year.”
