TENDRING TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE
SIXTH FORM
Creating independent learners
‘Teaching in the Sixth Form is outstanding. Teachers have excellent subject knowledge and
make sure that students discuss their work so that they become independent, critical
learners. Teachers keep students well informed about how well they are making progress,
and give excellent advice and direction on how to improve their work’ Ofsted.
Welcome to Tendring Technology College Sixth Form
and thank you for considering us for your programme
of study. I am delighted that you want to find out
more about what we have to offer and I hope that
this prospectus will provide you with the information
to help you choose appropriate courses to follow, as
well as appreciate the wide range of opportunities
our Sixth Form can offer you to develop or discover
new skills and interests.
Our school Sixth Form combines the high quality,
specialist teaching you might typically associate with
Sixth Form colleges, with an outstanding support
structure. This ensures that each student is given
every opportunity to achieve their full potential.
We want to ensure we provide the right course for the
right student and that the right student is on the right
course. We look forward to supporting you in your
quest for success. This prospectus will provide you
with the information to help you begin choosing your
personal suite of courses.
Any student who is successful in securing a place in
our Sixth Form will enjoy positive relationships with
teachers; high quality teaching; a broad range of
extracurricular opportunities as well as stretch and
challenge in the classroom. Providing you meet our
basic entry requirements, and those specific to
particular subject areas, you are very welcome to join
us and take full advantage of all that Sixth Form life
here can offer you.
Welcome to our community
If you choose to apply for a place at TTC,
please follow the procedures outlined in the Sixth
Form section of the College website or contact the
Sixth Form centre on 01255 672116 for
further assistance.
We look forward to welcoming you.
Caroline Haynes, Principal
We treat all our students as individuals with particular
aspirations and potential, whether you are like Simon,
who we prepared for Medicine at Cambridge,
Hannah, who aspired to read History at Edinburgh or
Bethany, who dreamed of becoming a Marine
Documentary Photographer, we tailor your
programme to meet your needs and it goes beyond
academic study.
An Individual approach
An ethos of achievement for all
‘Sixth Form students’ behaviour and attitudes are outstanding and contribute much to their
impressive achievement. They have extremely positive opinions about the college, and are
particularly appreciative of the time teachers give to support them. They take on important
roles in the college to promote enrolment on Sixth Form courses and to act as guides to
visitors. They work together extremely well’ Ofsted.
Life as a Sixth Former
You may have a specific career in mind such as Harry,
who is now a fashion designer or Ellie, an Architect.
Or you may just want to pursue your love of a subject
internationally such as Robyn who is studying French
in Paris or Matthew who went to the US on a Tennis
scholarship and now oversees Lawn Tennis in the UK.
So what is it like to study at Tendring Technology
College?
‘...It’s Monday morning and I walk into school at 8.30.
I have 10 minutes to talk with friends before the bell
goes and I head to my tutor room. At 9.00 it’s lesson
one and I make my way to the science block for
Biology. I then have an hour of History before break
at 11.00 and I can relax for 20 minutes. At 11.20 I have
a study period which I use to catch up on homework.
12.20 it’s lunch and after half an hour I’m back in the
science block for Chemistry before my last lesson of
the day, Economics. When the bell signals the end of
school, I meet up with my sister and head home to
attempt an hour of homework before going back to
school for an hour and a half of Volleyball training. At
18.00 I come home and after tea, sometimes I spend
another hour or two doing schoolwork before relaxing
and watching the TV before bed’
Chloe, year 12 student.
Embrace every opportunity
‘I really did think the students were great. A great mix of characters! Having visited a lot of different schools,
I must say that the Sixth Formers at TTC were particularly polite and lovely. They seemed really interested in
our WOHAA programme, and I really hope to have the opportunity to come back and visit them again at some
point in the future’ Robert, The Wings of Hope Children’s Charity.
All Sixth Form students at TTC have an experienced
personal tutor who will support their progress and
help and advise them about progression to university,
college or the workplace. Tutors are the first point of
academic support, and they will work with students to
develop study skills as well as support them in their
studies and career development. Tutors guide their
tutees through the UCAS application process,
including the personal statement, and feed into the
formulation of the College reference.
A clear system of tracking allows students, parents
and tutors to monitor progress. Students who are
doing particularly well will be rewarded. For those
who are struggling to fulfil their potential, there is a
system of additional support available.
A programme of study at Tendring Technology
College is about more than academic achievement.
We place a great emphasis on complementing
students studies with many opportunities to develop
soft skills, the kind of skills that are valued in today’s
workplace.
Through the use of an additional timetabled tutor
lesson a range of opportunities are available. It is
through these opportunities that our students
develop an extensive range of skills that set them
apart from the competition. Past students have been
invited to be finalists for their charitable contributions
to the Wings of Hope charity at the Royal College of
Surgeons and the House of Lords. Our Young
Enterprise participants consistently make it to
the regional and national finals. Each year a group of
students visit Tower Hamlets in east London to help
serve breakfast at a homeless shelter; a community
Supporting you to Aim high & Achieve higher
opportunity usually reserved for blue chip
executives. Whether it is taking part in the National
Citizen Service, volunteering in the community,
achieving gold in the Cambridge Chemistry challenge,
mentoring younger students, attending a Moot court,
studying for an EPQ or playing Rugby or Volleyball,
our enrichment programme is designed to create well
rounded individuals.
Each year we prepare over one hundred students to
move on to university; most of them secure their first
choice. Students go on to study a range of subjects
including: Medicine; History; Geography; Chemistry;
English; Media & TV; Fine art and Photography; Law;
Sociology; Engineering and Teaching.
Our students can be found in all corners of the
country. However, year on year we find that
the most popular and successful choices include:
Loughborough; King’s College London; Exeter;
Cambridge; Oxford; Queen Mary London;
Birmingham; UCL; University of Arts; Essex;
Edinburgh; LSE; Anglia Ruskin University.
Are you ready for Level 3 study?
Before and after the Year 11 results, students will be
guided towards the programme which best suits their
talents, ambitions and career interests. For some, the
route is not always obvious and there may be a need
to return to core subjects to ensure future progress.
This is especially important for those who do not
possess a grade C in English or Maths. Pathways
will be different and personalised to the individual’s
needs.
Prepped for the best
A broad and balanced curriculum
‘The curriculum has breadth and balance with a good balance of academic and vocational
courses. It is flexible and enables students to follow the most appropriate pathway for them’.
‘The use of assessment is rigorous; students comment positively about prompt marking and
feedback that helps them make good progress’ Ofsted.
All courses are subject to viability. Their operation will
reflect choices made by students and resources. We
currently offer the following level 3 courses:
Facilitating A level subjects
Biology; Chemistry; English Literature; French;
German; Geography; History; Mathematics,
and Physics.
Additional academic A levels
Art; Business Studies; Drama; Economics; Law;
Music; Photography; Physical Education;
Product Design/Resistant Materials; Psychology;
Sociology; Systems and Control, and Textiles.
Vocational and Applied Learning
Business; Applied Science; Health and Social Care;
ICT; Creative Media Production; Music
Performance; Sport, and Volleyball Academy.
Become a role model
‘The support from some of the teachers has been absolutely fantastic - support that probably wouldn’t be avail-
able at a larger college’ Josh year 13.
‘Enjoy your last two years here. Find a balance between having fun and working hard because the next stage of
your life is around the corner’ Lauren, year 13.
‘Work hard, you cannot achieve a greater self by working at the same level’ Chloe, year 13
Life in the Sixth Form is very different from Year 11. In
addition to having your own purpose built
facilities, you will have more of a say in how we run
the Sixth Form, and you will be consulted on all
aspects of school life. As young adults you will be the
role models of the school and should act accordingly.
You will be given many opportunities to engage with
enrichment activities and the community and many
of these opportunities will be managed by you. The
Sixth Form is an active and outgoing community
playing a very important part in the wider Tendring
community.
If you are to benefit from the Sixth Form, you must
be prepared to meet academic challenges. You will
become increasingly responsible for your own
learning as you develop as an effective independent
learner. You will need to create a partnership with
your teachers to achieve the best outcomes. We aim
to increase your flexibility and independence as you
move through the Sixth Form. You will need to use
the greater freedom that you will be given in an
industrious and worthwhile manner, taking advantage
of the opportunity to develop your leadership and
teambuilding. We hope you are ready to meet the
challenge. Respect, Honesty, and Responsibility make
up our core value system – we call it ‘TTC3’.
These values are at the heart of everything we do. We
expect everyone in our community -
staff and students - to model these values in our
day-to-day activities, in class, in tutorials and beyond
the college.
Attendance, academic progress, behaviour, conduct
and attitude are all closely monitored to ensure that
you are maximising your potential. College rules are
designed with the intention of treating you as adults
The highest of expectations
and expecting an adult response from you. Working
relationships between sixth formers and staff are
usually different from those experienced in Years 7
– 11. Students should be reminded that they have a
responsibility to talk to teachers if work is going to
be late or if lessons are going to be missed. If work is
below the standard that a student is capable of then
the teacher may ask for it to be re-submitted.
Thank you for taking the time to read our prospectus,
we look forward to working with you.

We place a great emphasis on complementing students studies with many opportunities to develop soft skills, the kind of skills that are valued in today’s workplace. Through the use of an additional timetabled tutor lesson a range of opportunities are available. It is through these opportunities that our students develop an extensive range of skills that set them apart from the competition. Past students have been invited to be finalists for their charitable contributions to the Wings of Hope charity at the Royal College of Surgeons and the House of Lords. Our Young Enterprise participants consistently make it to the regional and national finals. Each year a group of students visit Tower Hamlets in east London to help serve breakfast at a homeless shelter; a community Supporting you to Aim high & Achieve higher opportunity usually reserved for blue chip executives. Whether it is taking part in the National Citizen Service, volunteering in the community, achieving gold in the Cambridge Chemistry challenge, mentoring younger students, attending a Moot court, studying for an EPQ or playing Rugby or Volleyball, our enrichment programme is designed to create well rounded individuals.

Students go on to study a range of subjects including: Medicine; History; Geography; Chemistry; English; Media & TV; Fine art and Photography; Law; Sociology; Engineering and Teaching. Our students can be found in all corners of the country. However, year on year we find that the most popular and successful choices include: Loughborough; King’s College London; Exeter; Cambridge; Oxford; Queen Mary London; Birmingham; UCL; University of Arts; Essex; Edinburgh; LSE; Anglia Ruskin University. Are you ready for Level 3 study? Before and after the Year 11 results, students will be guided towards the programme which best suits their talents, ambitions and career interests. This is especially important for those who do not possess a grade C in English or Maths. Pathways will be different and personalised to the individual’s needs. In addition to having your own purpose built facilities, you will have more of a say in how we run the Sixth Form, and you will be consulted on all aspects of school life. As young adults you will be the role models of the school and should act accordingly. You will be given many opportunities to engage with enrichment activities and the community and many of these opportunities will be managed by you. The Sixth Form is an active and outgoing community playing a very important part in the wider Tendring community. If you are to benefit from the Sixth Form, you must be prepared to meet academic challenges. You will become increasingly responsible for your own learning as you develop as an effective independent learner. You will need to create a partnership with your teachers to achieve the best outcomes. We aim to increase your flexibility and independence as you move through the Sixth Form. You will need to use the greater freedom that you will be given in an industrious and worthwhile manner, taking advantage of the opportunity to develop your leadership and teambuilding. We hope you are ready to meet the challenge. Respect, Honesty, and Responsibility make up our core value system – we call it ‘TTC3’. These values are at the heart of everything we do. We expect everyone in our community - staff and students - to model these values in our day-to-day activities, in class, in tutorials and beyond the college. Attendance, academic progress, behaviour, conduct and attitude are all closely monitored to ensure that you are maximising your potential. College rules are designed with the intention of treating you as adults The highest of expectations and expecting an adult response from you. Working relationships between sixth formers and staff are usually different from those experienced in Years 7 – 11. Students should be reminded that they have a responsibility to talk to teachers if work is going to be late or if lessons are going to be missed. If work is below the standard that a student is capable of then the teacher may ask for it to be re-submitted. Thank you for taking the time to read our prospectus, we look forward to working with you.
