James Pasternak has extensive international experience working with organizations focused on global learning and education. He has taught refugee children in Berlin, participated in a seminar for American German professors in Leipzig, and administered medical examinations in Philadelphia. Pasternak also has experience conducting research, translation work, and administrative duties for organizations in Germany, Russia, and the United States focused on international cooperation, education exchange, and public policy issues.

Rosa Parks Grundschule (Berlin, Germany)
Worked as a co-teacher during the summer of 2016 at a primary school in Kreuzberg, Berlin,
teaching refugee children from war zones in Syria, Afghanistan, Kurdistan, Iraq, and Iran.
Responsible for teaching German and mathematics, and I had supervisory duties as a teacher of
the school during field trips, school events, and organized visits to the classroom. Organized a
community garden for the students on the balcony of our classroom, and introduced the children
to horticulture as a practical means to overcome stress and as a healthy source of snack food during

DAAD / Fulbright Grant for American Professors of German (Leipzig, Germany)
I was selected to participate in a two-week seminar in Leipzig at the Herder Institute’s central
office in Leipzig in a program designed for American professors of German. The program
addressed changes in the German education system and approaches to curriculum and pedagogy
since the influx of refugees during 2015-2016.
Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (Philadelphia Office)
Medical Examination Proctor and Administrator- Administered and proctored medical school
examinations for American and foreign students. Job required ability to multitask, as well as the
ability to pay close attention to detail and to be constantly aware of test environment to ensure the
integrity of the examination. (March-July 2009)
German Historical Institute, Archival Methods Course, Germany
Summer training seminar in archival and paleographic research methods, introduced to
organizational and practical aspects of archival structure as well as how to access and analyze
materials for advanced scholarly research. Received additional training in reading various forms
of handwritten German (Sütterlinschrift, Fraktur) from the sixteenth to the early nineteenth
century. (Speyer, Koblenz, Cologne, Weimar, June 2008).
Congressional Research Service, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.
International Affairs Analyst- four-month contracted employment with CRS, a congressional
research Institution in the Division of Foreign Affairs, Defense and Trade. Cooperative
teamwork on various projects of congressional interest, including America’s response to the
terrorist threat after September 11th, 2001. Assignments included the writing of reports,
reseraching topics relevant to divisional projects, and the presentation and submission of
2. information and materials gathered to responsible authorities and policy makers. Team research
contributed to The 9/11 Commission Report. (April 2002- July 2002)
Fundraising Research Coordinator, Ohio State Univ. Dept. of Slavic and East Eur. Studies
Conducted research to determine sources of funding for the expansion and improvement of the
Ohio State University Center for Slavic and East European Studies’ Hungarian Language and
Culture Program. Evaluated and prioritized potential public and private funding sources using
Internet, Word and Excel computer programs for future grant writing analysis and research.

Duties included systemization and cataloging of all research, literary and dissertation materials
for the Slavic Department staff and graduate students. Assignments completed through extensive

Summer internship with the Berlin Coordination Office for the evaluation and distribution of
grants and aid funds for economic, democratic and environmental organizations in Central and
Eastern Europe. Responsibilities included compilation of database resources for East/Central

Appointment as translator for German-Russian non-profit organization concerned with the
promotion of human rights, democratic movements, social assistance and independent media
associations during summer 1999. Cross-referenced and translated organization’s internet
website from German and Russian into English. (July-August 1999)

Six-month internship with German consulting and auditing firm for non-profit agencies and state
projects. Responsible for firm translations and materials for internet website. Conducted research

Youth for Understanding International Exchange, Columbus, Ohio, USA
Summer internship with Midwest hub office involving placement of foreign exchange students in
American host families. Administrative duties included case study management, telephone
