6. Reasons for Kurt Cobain’s Drug Addiction:
• struggled with depression (deep emotional pain) at a young age as when his
parents divorced at age nine - spent his teenage years taking drugs and living
out acts of teenage rebellion
• his depression took refuge in music and drugs in his adult years became
diagnosed as Bipolar Disorder
• health issues - Cobain’s sleep disorder and chronic pain from an undiagnosed
stomach condition led him to start using heroin in 1986 as self-medication
• with a depressive mindset he was ultimately taken to the brink due
to his discomfort, or inability to deal, with fame
• Cobain began feeling he was losing control of his future
so began using heroin to ease his stress – Nirvana’ s popularity
skyrocketing into the mainstream, Cobain was conflicted
on the direction his music was going

7. Kurt Cobain didn’t stop using drugs until his death:
• throughout high school, Cobain got deeper into the drinking and drug scene
• he continued using heroin throughout his short life to escape from the stress
brought on by sudden fame and to relieve the pain of an “uncomfortable
stomach condition” plaguing him for years as doctors were unable to
pinpoint its cause
• he made his first attempt at rehab in early 1992 at ‘Exodus Recovery Center’ in
Los Angeles, California for a detox program but his sobriety did not last long
and he relapsed just a few months after leaving rehab
• not long after, Cobain's heroin use resumed his addiction and
only worsened as the years progressed
• his psychological state worsened, the prominent artist ended his
life on April 5, 1994, in Seattle, he took a massive dose of
heroin and shot himself with a Remington carbine

8. Kurt Cobain’s drug addiction caused him to do the following:
• vandalism during his teenage years
• became rebellious during his youth, abused alcohol and solvents
• turned an introvert and a loner with suicidal instincts - began to
distance himself from his band and suffered depressive episodes,
which led him to attempt against his life twice before he shot
himself to death
• became suicidal - in July of 1993 he suffered his first drug overdose
and again overdosed in March of 1994 for which he was
hospitalized and in coma and after these two attempts of
threatening his life he locked himself in a room
with a gun and later was found dead

• an American musician, best known as the lead vocalist, guitarist
and primary songwriter of the rock band Nirvana
• hyperactive as a youngster, he took Ritalin to help him concentrate
in school and sedatives (Rohypnol) to help him sleep at night
• in his youth his personal phrase, “I hate myself and want to die” was
written in his journals and carried into his music career and even
planned to use it as an album title
• by April 8, 1994 he was found dead in his home in
Seattle he committed suicide three days earlier and
large amounts of heroin and valium in his system were
found in his dead body
• died April 5, 1994, Seattle, Washington at age 27
