• struggled with depression (deep emotional pain) at a young age as when his
parents divorced at age nine - spent his teenage years taking drugs and living
out acts of teenage rebellion
• his depression took refuge in music and drugs in his adult years became
diagnosed as Bipolar Disorder
• health issues - Cobain’s sleep disorder and chronic pain from an undiagnosed
stomach condition led him to start using heroin in 1986 as self-medication
• with a depressive mindset he was ultimately taken to the brink due
to his discomfort, or inability to deal, with fame
• Cobain began feeling he was losing control of his future
so began using heroin to ease his stress – Nirvana’ s popularity
skyrocketing into the mainstream, Cobain was conflicted
on the direction his music was going

• he continued using heroin throughout his short life to escape from the stress
brought on by sudden fame and to relieve the pain of an “uncomfortable

pinpoint its cause
• he made his first attempt at rehab in early 1992 at ‘Exodus Recovery Center’ in
Los Angeles, California for a detox program but his sobriety did not last long
and he relapsed just a few months after leaving rehab
• not long after, Cobain's heroin use resumed his addiction and
only worsened as the years progressed
• his psychological state worsened, the prominent artist ended his
life on April 5, 1994, in Seattle, he took a massive dose of
heroin and shot himself with a Remington carbine
