5. The built environment has the ability to affect one’s emotional and mental state of mind. The design for this
project will use environmental psychology to create a place that is a safe haven for women, physically, mentally
and emotionally, providing a safe and stable home and community that will support and provide assistance in
order to meet all the needs of those living in the shelter.

CONCEPT
14. COLOR SCHEME
13
The color scheme was strongly influenced by color theory and the effects that each would
have on the women living in the shelter. It is calm and relaxing but also has enough warmth to
not be cold. The palette also relates to the robin and its natural habitat.

18. FIRST FLOOR
17
Meeting areas that can be closed off are important for
meeting with case workers and lawyers.
Having a big and open kitchen is important for gathering and
learning. Kitchen need to be able to be closed off and locked
in order to deal with eating disorders and self-destructive
problems.
19. 18
SECOND FLOOR
Educational Rooms for classes that also have space
for studying and tutors. Many life and professional skills
classes can be taught in these rooms.
The gym provides a place for physical health and also all
the mental and emotional benefits that come along with
exercise.
Lots of storage is crucial for donations, gifts and things
the women may hoard or gather for their future.
20. THIRD FLOOR
19
Art therapy is a helpful activity and the art room also allows
for the chance to be messy.
21. 20
FOURTH FLOOR
The screen in the common areas divide up the larger spaces
on this floor. Open concept floor plans and wide open
spaces can be terrifying for victims. Too much space makes
clients feel too exposed and feel like they have no privacy.
Having bedrooms be as identical as possible is crucial.
25. ENTRY AND GALLERY
24
The Entry provides a space for a gallery
to display art done by the women for
therapy. This open area can also be used
for charity events and other gatherings.
29. DINING AREA
28
The Dining area faces the largest windows in the
space which brings in natural light and create a
cheerful atmosphere. The tile patterns and the
chandeliers connect to the geometric triangle
patterning inspired by the concept.
30. The Garden Atrium provides a
central point for circulation and
also a source of natural light
through the building. Additionally,
it is a place for the women to learn
to grow plants for cooking and
enjoyment. The trellis acts as a
safety net, both psychologically
and physically. It diminishes the
feeling of being exposed and high
up on the upper floors, and also
provents suicidal attempts.
33. LIBRARY
32
1/4”= 1’ SCALE
LIBRARY ELEVATION
The Library provides a space for the women to
relax, learn and curl up in a cozy place with a good
book. The reading nooks are comfortable and
private places that allow for alone time but do not
isolate the women. They mimics the geometry
created by the column capitals that are original to
the building. The form is also reminiscent of a bird
house where a robin would like to dwell.
34.
35. COMMUNITY AREA
34
The common areas are places for the women
to gather in groups to hang out and engage in
community or spend time alone. The wooden
screen creates an enclosed and cozy space,
inspired by a birds nest, to help the women
feel safe and protected. Human trafficking
victims often are afraid of large, open spaces,
so these partitions solve that problem in the
larger areas by creating visual buffers. The
positive and negative patterning of slats and
triangles allows for this safe feeling without
being too closed off or boxed in.
36.
37. BEDROOM
36
The bedrooms provide a serene space for
the women to retreat to for more privacy and
also for sleeping. The light green wall color
was chosen for its calming effect. Geometric
silhouettes of birds take flight on the wall to
symbolize hope and tie the robin to the space.
Creating rooms for two strikes the perfect
balance between giving privacy and the sense
of having one’s own space, but also giving the
women an automatic accountability partner
and guardian through their roommate, as
human trafficking victims are at risk for self-
destructive behavior.
38. Materials were all chosen for their sustainable aspects, durability and also convey
the geometric abstraction of the robin and its nest. Together they create a
comfortable and cozy environment for the women to call home.

The furniture used for the shelter evokes the sense of Frank Lloyd
