Stepping off Campus: Cultivating
Community & Campus Engagement
My community
I have lived in
Douglaston for over 10
years
My children attended
PS 98 and I was an
active PTA member in
the school for years
My work at QCC and
continued work in the
community made me
realize that this was a
necessity for working
parents
 Do we need an after school
program in Douglaston, NY?
 PS 98 dissolved their internal after
school program and 8 families left the
school for local private schools
 PS 98’s already small population of
around 200 students was in jeopardy of
decreasing further
 Community Church of Douglaston
(CCD), with classroom space, is located
literally next door to PS98
 Developed a relationship with CCD,
created a program proposal and with
the VP’s approval …
The After School
Academy
was born in 2012!
What is the After School Academy?
 The ASA program runs Monday-Friday from 2:30pm-6pm
at the Community Church of Douglaston (CCD)
 ASA is open to Pre-K – 5 th grade students
 Students are picked up at PS98 by ASA staff and walked
over to CCD each day
 Students have snack, do their homework and participate in
a STE@M academic enrichment activity based on the day’s
theme
ASA students perform their version
of “Snow White” at the end of the
school year, 2014
Program Stats
36 students in 2012 – 24
were enrolled for one
day per week
27 students in 2013
35 students in 2014 – 25
are enrolled for the full
year and 10 of them are
5 days per week
Pre-K Students at ASA
The NYC Department of Education
Universal Pre-K program that
shares the space with ASA became
a full-day program in Fall 2014.
Not only is our program
convenient, but it makes financial
sense for the families who are not
paying for private Pre-K.
6 of our 35 children are from the
Pre-K program!
These children will more than
likely stay in our program after
they transfer to PS98.
