John Maclean brings to this company over 40 years of experience in the engineering profession. John was awarded an
MBE for services to sport in 1980 having played 98 Sheffield Shield and first class matches for Queensland, 32 as captain
and four tests in the 1978‐79 Ashes Series, two as vice‐captain. In 2000 John was presented with the Australian sports
medal.
Upon graduation, John commenced work with the Co‐ordinator General’s Department in Brisbane, before spending six
months in London with Mott, Hay and Anderson. Upon returning to Australia, he joined Antony Tod and Partners then
spent a period at Irrigation and Water Supply Commission prior to joining Lend Lease Civil and Civic in the community
market and liaising with stakeholders in a proposed Coking Coal Plant in Gladstone, for Lend Lease Engineering. In 1980,
John commenced John A. Maclean and Associates, and after a series of mergers and name changes, this firm morphed
into Hyder Consulting. A period in 1996 was spent in Vancouver, Canada raising funds for a gold mining venture in Peru.
Upon returning to Australia, John established another consultancy and was taken over by Opus International Consultants
in 2008.
Career Details
2015 Joined BG Group as Director of Growth Strategies and Special Projects. John is also operating in
the finance facilitation area, helping to raise the seed capital for the IFED project on the Gilbert
River System and liaising with various mine operators in the Galilee Basin.
2008 – 2015 Opus bought Maclean and Associates together with Farr Evrat and T.A.P.E (Group 42). John
grew the Opus client base in Sydney and Melbourne as well as Brisbane and was able to
secure the Engineering and Environmental work necessary to achieve bankable feasibility for
the $2billion IFED project.

John Maclean took on various consulting roles including a period in the partnership,
Morgan and Maclean and later established Maclean and Associates.
1980 – 1996
John built Maclean and Associates into a multidisciplinary engineering, environmental and
town planning consultancy. Whilst merging with Wagon Chapman to form a national
group; later taken over by Welsh Water to form Hyder Consulting.
1975 ‐ 1980
Executive Engineer with Department of Irrigation and Water Supply involved in
investigation of project feasibility and dam construction including the supple of gravel for
Wivenhoe Dam.
1972 – 1972
