1. George Washington's career as the commander ofthe Continental Army was peppered with
hardship, inconclusive battles and painful losses during the Revolutionary War. Throughout
these difficulties, he maintained careful vigilance over his troops' welfare and held them to high
standards. Ultimately, his leadership and victories led to the unlikely success and birth of our
Nation. For these accomplishments, he was posthumously appointed General ofthe Armies of
the United States, the highest military rank.
2. General Washington's life and career carry an important lesson for all of us about leadership
and resilience. Our ability to face adversity, persevere and encourage others to do the same is an
important part ofliving the Army Values. As we celebrate this holiday, I urge each of you to
consider how you can exercise and improve these skills, both in yourselves and in those around
you.
3. Commanders and supervisors must speak with subordinate personnel and leaders to reinforce
the need to identify hazards and manage risk prior to the extended holiday weekend. Evaluating
and overcoming risks to ourselves, co-workers and our families is essential for.each ofus to
