Editor's Notes
Stan" is a song by American rapper Eminem featuring British singer Dido. It was released on November 21, 2000 as the third singlefrom Eminem's third album The Marshall Mathers LP (2000). It was number one in twelve countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland and Australia.
Dido's lyrics are actually a remix of the opening lines from her song "Thank You". The 45 King-produced track also uses a slightly modified break from "Thank You" as its base sample. Coincidentally, both songs were released as singles in late 2000. "Stan" has been called one of Eminem's best songs and is considered one of his signature songs. Rolling Stone magazine ranked "Stan" at #296 in their list in The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.[2] The song was also listed at #15 on VH1's list of the greatest hip hop songs of all-time and was also named in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
The song was nominated for multiple awards, including Best Song at the MTV Europe Music Awards, Video of the Year, Best Rap Video, Best Direction, Best Cinematography at the MTV Video Music Awards, but only won Best International Artist Video at the MuchMusic Video Awards. In April 2011, Complex magazine put together a list of the 100 greatest Eminem songs, ranking "Stan" at #2.[3] The name of the eponymous character has given rise to a slang term online which refers to overzealous, maniacal, overly obsessed fans of a celebrity or personality; the term has been included in the Oxford English Dictionary.
On November 5, 2013, Eminem released a follow-up song, "Bad Guy", on his eighth album The Marshall Mathers LP 2.
He had a turbulent childhood. He did not know his father and his mother had an unstable job so they had to move frequently, so he had no friends and was very lonely. He looked for a way to express himself through music
Born on October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri, rap musician Eminem had a turbulent childhood. He released The Slim Shady LP in early 1999, and the album went multi-platinum, garnering Eminem two Grammy Awards and four MTV Video Music Awards. In 2000, the rapper released The Marshall Mathers LP, which was noted as the fastest-selling album in rap history. More recently, in 2010, Eminem released the Grammy-winning album Recovery, a highly autobiographical attempt to come to terms with his struggles with addiction and experience with rehabilitation. Eminem plans to release his eighth album, MMLP2, in 2013.
This song tells the story of a fan obsessed with Eminem. When his letters are not answered, he puts his pregnant girlfriend in his trunk and drives off a bridge. The song ends with Eminem answering his letter and realizing Stan was the man in the news who drove off the bridge.
Eminem: No. Stan was just somebody completely made up, based on what could happen if you take my lyrics too seriously. I'm nice enough and courteous enough to tell the kids at the end of the day this is not how you want to be. You don't want to grow up to be just like me. When I say, "Jump off a fucking bridge or slit your wrists," that's not what I'm really trying to say. It's tongue in cheek.
