and skills in solving percent problems. Activities have been chosen that you can
relate math with problems you encounter in your daily life.
At the end of this module, you are expected to:
• find the percentage in a given problem
• solve routine and non-routine problems involving

Let’s read and answer the problem below.
Allen has a savings of Php1,800. He spent 30% of it on a t-shirt. How
much did he spend?
When you learned how to translate simple English statements into
mathematical expressions, you learned that “of” can indicate times. This frequently
comes up when using percentage.
In the given problem, you need 30% of Ph1 800. Convert the percentage
“30%” to its decimal form, namely the number 0.30. Then, since “30% of Ph1 800”
tells you to multiply the 0.30 and 1 800, you get 0.30 x 1 800 = 540. This says that
540 is 30% of Ph1 800.
Therefore, Allen spent Php 540 on a t-shirt.
Study the other examples below:
1. What is 50% of 80?
N = 0.50 x 80

The equation is:
N = 0.50 x 80
= 40
Forty is 50% 0f 80
2. 45% of what is 9.
0.45 x = 9
(45%) (of what) (is) (nine)
The equation is:
0.45(x) = 9
0.45 (𝑥)

Therefore, 9 is 45% of 20.
3. What percent of 20 is 30?
We have the original number 20 and the comparative number 30. The
unknown in the problem is the rate of percentage. The equation is:
X 20 = 30
(what percent) (of twenty) (is) (thirty)
X(20) = 30

X = 1.5
Since x stands for a percentage, convert this decimal into a percentage, 1.5
times 100%, hence, 1.5 = 150%.
Therefore, 30 is 150% of 20.

In Grade 5 – Chrysanthemum class, there are 40 pupils. 35% of them are
boys. How many are boys?
Remember these three important words that help us in solving problems about
percent:
1. Base represents the whole. It is the total number from which a percent is
taken.
2. Percentage is a part of a whole. It is the result of finding a certain percent of
a number.
3. Rate is the number indicating how many percent or hundredths are taken.
In solving word problems, we need to follow the following steps.

We can use any of the methods discussed in lesson 1 to solve problems involving
percentage.
Now, let’s answer the problem above.
1. UNDERSTAND the problem.
• Asked: the number of boys
• Given facts: 40 pupils, 35% of them are boys
2. PLAN what to do.
The number of boys is asked, so the percentage is unknown. We can use either
Ratio and proportion or the Techan’s Triangle.
3. SOLVE the problem.

The block model approach is a method of visualizing word problems
using blocks to represent a problem situation. It is especially helpful in solving
problems requiring two or more steps.
Teresa has 140 stamps. She has 75% more stamps than Elvie. How
many stamps does Elvie have?
1. UNDERSTAND the problem.
• Asked: the number of stamps Elvie has
• Given facts: Teresa has 140 stamps; 75% more than Elvie
2. PLAN what to do.
The number of stamps Elvie has is asked. Note that the given 140 stamps of
Teresa is 75% more than that of Elvie. It means 140 stamps is 175%.
3. SOLVE the problem.
Let us solve this problem by using the block model approach.

175% = 140 stamps
1% = 140 ÷ 175
100% = 140 ÷ 175 x 100
100% = 80 stamps
Therefore, Elvie has 80 stamps.
Joyce’s savings is 20% more than Carol’s. If Joyce transfers Php 480
into Carol’s savings account, Carol’s savings will be 20% more than Joyce’s.
Find their total savings.
