Very few animals live on high
mountains.They have hard elastic hoofs that
enable them to jump about on hard rock.
They areusually very agile; sheep & goats
being the most agile. The Lamas and the
Alpacas arewell-known species in South
America (Andes). Many are ground-living
animals, and livein holes & burrows.

In the true Tundra regions where there isonly a
short warm and ice-free period, many animals settle down

they move southwards into the coniferous forests during
winters. Further North in theregions of permanent snow
no animal life is possible except perhaps for the Polar
Bear.Reindeer is probably the only permanent animal in
the Tundra's with a sprinkling of theArctic Fox, the Arctic
wolf and the Arctic bear. Eskimo dog is also found in
certainplaces. All over the world man has been
domesticating the animals for food, transportand clothing
since ancient times.
