EVOLUTION OF PUBLIC REALM:    3 STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT
1) Beautification green space – focused on city image characterised by 
an emphasis on soft landscape assets, especially trees, lawns and 
flowers over extensive areas.  
Examples: The Corniche, Picnic Parks, &  Bainuna Street.
2) Responding to community needs ‐ characterised by development of 
neighbourhood parks, playgrounds and facilities.
Examples: Sector Neighbourhood Parks & Corniche Activation.
3) 2030 Plan / PRDM – characterised by even greater emphasis on 
community needs, sustainability (Estidama) and focus on design 
quality and integrity responding to PRDM.
Examples: Central Markets Square, Khalifa City Parks & Mohammed Bin 
Zayed City Parks & Streetscapes.

technology overview.
• It provides specific detailed design advice/options/do’s & don'ts for every 
aspect of exterior lighting design and application and is aimed at all members 
of the design chain.
• It has been written in plain, clear text with extensive use of diagrams and local 
photographs to show relevant and easy to understand examples
• It co‐ordinates fully with the DMA Lighting Specifications and other relevant 
local standards and provides enhanced advice on how to meet project brief 
criteria.
• It can replace many of the numerous current International guides listed in 
documents and is specific to the requirements of Abu Dhabi and the region. A 
first for the Middle East.

Introduction
Project BackgroundIn line with the with the principles for sustainable development set out in
the following Government initiatives and manuals :
• Abu Dhabi 2030 Urban Structure Framework Plan (UPC),
• Estidama principles,
• Abu Dhabi Environmental Strategy 2030 (EAD)
• UPC – Urban Street Design Manual (USDM),
• UPC – Public Realm Design Manual (PRDM),
• UPC – Utility Corridors Design Manual (UCDM),
• DOT – Walking and Cycling Master Plan (WCMP),
ADM needs to produce a set of volumes addressing guidelines, standards,
manuals and specifications for design, construction, management and
maintenance of the public realm in Abu Dhabi City.

GOAL To define requirements for sustainability, quality, safety and 
accessibility of the Abu Dhabi landscape/public realm.
 To define the best practice and identify benchmarks for

of landscape/public realm schemes;
