‘PUT YOUR HAND UP’
A SOCIAL MEDIA AND SUICIDE PREVENTION WORKSHOP
Did you know suicide is the leading cause of death in 15 to 44 year olds in Australia?
In 2012-2013, suicide was the leading external cause of death in children aged 10-14 years.
It is estimated that for every suicide 30 other people attempt suicide.
Bullying can contribute to suicide, attempted suicide and suicidal thoughts.
24/7 access to social media means young people cannot escape.
This interactive workshop has been developed by a registered psychologist and experienced child protection detective with over 40 years
policing experience utilised to educate young people on social media issues and the insidious nature of suicide behaviours. Social and
Emotional training is paramount in educating young people on how to cope with cyberbullying, depression potentially leading to suicidal
thoughts and how to recognise these behaviours in themselves and mates. The workshop in addition will give young people problem solving
skills and techniques based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to assist in coping with life choices in a positive way. The workshop has
been delivered to hundreds of young people aged 14-16 years and their parents with outstanding results. Independent surveys have revealed
that over 95% students reported that they would change the way they use/interact on social media with over 90% providing positive
responses to having a better understanding of youth suicide that would help them into the future! Below are some testimonials’ from
