1. You Might Just Be Obsessive Too!
My name is Ian Walshaw. I am a Hypnotherapist, Hypno Analyst and Change Work Practitioner
based in Selby, North Yorkshire.
I think hardly a week goes by without me hearing or seeing something in the news or from
someone I meet in regards to OCD or obsessive compulsive disorder.
The first thing we needs to clarify is that the symptoms of obsession and obsessive behaviour are
very different to the symptoms of compulsion and that it is really quite unfair to lump them all
together.
You see obsessive behaviour is not necessarily a bad thing. None of use complain that the person
who designed the computer we are reading this article on was obsessed with their job and
therefore made your computer smaller, neater or less hungry for power.
Also none of us would complain that someone who went the extra mile to be nice to us or care for
us was doing so because for whatever reason they felt compelled to be nice and was therefore
displaying a compulsive behaviour.
The problems come when someone thinks about something too much (Obsessive) and then is
surprised when they feel like they are compelled to carry out what they were thinking about.
Now the obvious everyday example of this is with people who are overweight. I hear all sorts of
excuses about why people are overweight and how they cannot stop themselves from eating.
Now not being able to stop yourself from eating could quite rightly fall into the category of a
compulsion. But not many people realise it is related to an obsession or at least to obsessive
thinking.
You see if a person spends far too long thinking (obsessing) about how lovely that chocolate cake
would be or those bags of crisps or that bottle of wine then because of the fundamental laws of
human psychology they are far more inclined to carry out what they were thinking about, they may
even class themselves as compelled to do so. I often hear the excuse I am a chocaholic, I cannot
help myself, I am addicted to food etc.
But the plain and simple truth is whatever you feel you are addicted to, you spend far too much
time thinking about (obsessing). By calling yourself an addict you are making it OK to behave in a
powerless fashion in front of the whole world which is your coping strategy for making yourself feel
better about your out of control behaviour.
2. I am going to make a sweeping statement here. ALL WEIGHT LOSS METHODS WORK!
Weight Watchers works, Slimming World Works, Slimfast Works, Jenny Craig Works, Tesco Diets
Works, your local Zumba Class Works as does swimming, jogging, power walking and aerobics
etc, etc.
The weak link in your goal to be slim is the way you think!!!! You spend far too much time thinking
(obsessing) about what you should do, what you shouldn't do or what you have done that did not
help.
This then has an impact on your self esteem, level of guilt and anxiety and you give up or move on
to the next wonder weight loss program.
But this is not just about weight. Obsessing about an argument, what might happen at work, where
the dispute with your neighbours might escalate to next, if your wife or husband is having an affair,
am I no good in bed, is my nose too big, do my ears stick out too much. The list is too long to do
justice to it and it is all about obsessive thinking.
Basically thinking the same thing far too much and generally something that would not lead to
happiness but to sadness damages us. But the damage is repairable, we were designed that way.
So would it not make sense to learn to stop thinking obsessive thoughts and as such cure yourself
of depression, anxiety, stress, OCD, body dysmorphia, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation
, fear of dogs, fear of spiders, fear of flying, social phobia and social anxiety etc, etc
All of the above and more besides are simple thinking errors or bad habits that you could easily
change with just a tiny bit of effort.
I am sure that because I am a hypnotherapist you would be looking for me to make you think
differently, to reprogram your brain, force you in a really nice way to lose weight, last longer in bed,
not be stressed, b less anxious, pass your driving test or that exam.
But the best way is for me to show you how to change yourself. Because by gently discovering this
for yourself.
I would guide you to a point of realisation where you can make a change to your thinking style
which is both easy and permanent, whilst at the same time giving yourself an opportunity to feel
pleased and proud of yourself for making all the changes needed to achieve whatever you would
like to achieve.
I offer a free initial screening session worth £50.00. Some people even notice changes in
3. themselves after this free session, which is a testament to the fact that even a brief chat with me
could make all the difference.
I don't do any hard sell and you can obsess (smile) about coming to see me for as long as you
would like before you make the decision that I can help you achieve your goals and happiness.
