5. I. Introduction ( about the chosen scenario )
This report discusses about the IoT project which is Smart Home. At the beginning I will introduce the goal
of the project. I then do primary research (both qualitative and quantitative) and secondary research to
find that impact and report on my research. In the report, I also critically evaluate the PM process and the
appropriate research methods applied.
Before start the research, I have met many questions about IoT, smart home such as what is IoT in general?
How does smart home apply IoT? How is smart home developing in Ha Noi? What are the challengers of
smart home? How are smart are smart home’s services helpful for house owners? What is architecture of
smart home? What are features being used in smart home? What are typical projects in Ha Noi that use
smart home? Some examples of popular smart home devices in Ha Noi and the world, and some
recommendations for user who wants to use smart home. Basically, with all of these objectives that not
only I want to focus on how smart home affects, what are the impacts of smart home to the people who
are using smart home and living in Ha Noi but also, I want to get how smart home works or be developed
in the world generally, and Ha Noi particularly. In order to achieve these objectives, I need to perform a
research about it, use some research methodologies from some type of research in order to collect the
data, then analyze data and provide my points with the evidences which are results from the research
methodologies.
II. Project initialization
1. The main aim of the project.
Since everyone’s home and needs are different, we decided to take a more generalized approach for
anyone who is building a new home and how to decide the best way to plan ahead for making it smart. So
the main purpose of my project is to create an application that helps users monitor and manage their
home. One of the main goals of a smart home is to allow homeowners to control devices, thermostats,
lights and other devices remotely using a smartphone or tablet via an internet connection. It does this by
automating routine processes as well as allowing homeowners to manage their home systems remotely.
By automating many aspects of daily life through remote technology, a smart home provides the ability to
control electronics and home appliances from a smartphone, tablet or computer. laptop. It adds an extra
level of convenience and comfort while removing the burden of manual home system maintenance.
6. 2. List of Objectives to achieve the aim
Research about "Internet Of Things"

project plan, manage risk, time, human resources.
Research my project: Manage and track user's home
Recommendation: The purpose of my project is to create an application that helps users monitor
and manage their home. to allow homeowners to control devices, thermostats, lights and other
devices remotely using a smartphone or tablet via an internet connection.

III. Project Management Plan
1. Scope
Today, with the development of technology that can bring a lot of advantages in many different fields such
as education, communication, especiallyhealth, etc. IoT is rapidly becoming a necessaryaspectof people's
daily lives. Physical items can now sense and collect data that can be controlled through digital and
intelligent technology. These devices, often referred to as "connected" or "smart" devices, can talk to
other related devices (machine-to-machine (M2M) communication) and operate on information.
information they receive from each other. The main purpose of the app is to monitor and manage your
home, there are a range of smart devices that you can control remotely by setting them the way you like
to automatize house maintenance.
Nowaday , most urban areas experienced a dramatic increase in the number of rooms, offices and unites
in buildings. this has made it difficult to manage the energy loss due to inefficient control of electrical
devices running inside these buildings. In addition, it is not practical to rely on users to manually control
these devices to save energy, a large number of technologies and sensors have been designed to manage
excessive energy consumption. They reduce energy consumption by turning off the electronic devices in
the homes based on data given from sensors such as motion detector, temperature sensor and Smoke
detector which detect the activities ina certain areas and send signals tothe control circuitry which adjusts
in output accordingly. Smart Home (SH) technology, in its context is a home comprised of smart devices
and promises many possibilities for our future lifestyle. At the same time, it can affect our living habits.
7. The problem solved through designing a smart home automation/monitoring system is to provide an
affordable and easy to use system for the average homeowner. The scope of work of this project is
comprehensive selection of process variables for monitoring and controlling parameters, deployment of
wireless networks to integrate sensors with central controller, PCB design for individual hardware
components and develop a user interface on a Raspberry Pi compatible LCD. The parameters selected for
monitoring are temperature/humidity, indoor air quality and capacity. Based on the measurements
provided by the selected sensor array, the selected control parameters are room temperature, automatic
blinds and automatic lights. System users will have access to input control parameter set points via the
LCD control panel. The dashboard must also provide an interface for the user to observe real-time data
from the sensor array.
The project is limited to monitor and control four electronic aspects inside the house, these aspects are
internal light, temperature using fan, water level and fire alarm system. Uses specific environmental
sensors namely MQ2 for smoke, LM35 for atmosphere temperature and water level sensor. Controlling
and monitoring these devices would be limited within the area of the house using main PC,and limited to
the area of the internet LAN inside the house when being controlling through smart phone application.
2. Time
The project is scheduled and completed in approximately 10 weeks. It begins on 17th May 2021 and also
ends on 26th July 2021
Date and time: 17/05/2021 - 26/07/2021

key role in the development of the application Smart Home. Next is indispensable in terms of cost, money
is the first priority, without money, the project cannot continue to operate, for example, there is no capital
to invest in equipment or pay salaries for employees or programmer. Finally, the equipment needs to be
fully equipped according to the requirements of the staff and programmers so that they are comfortable
in the working environment so that the development process becomes better.

V. Primary Research
1. Summaryabout Interview
To collect data from users for research, the team decided to create a list of questions that discussed the
user's experience with the app, before and after using the app. Therefore, we selected 2 people to
participate in this interview, some 25-40 years old representing the young group, and some people over
50 years old representing the middle and old age group. Therefore, the interview process will be divided
into two phases, the first phase is before using the application, and the other phase is after using the
application. All of them also have the experience of using, knowledge of smart home. Therefore, they can
be able to answer the questions which are related to functions, advantage and disadvantage points,
experience, and technology.
1.1. Before using Smart Home
Below is the full question for the process of before using the application, as well as the twoperson
interview process:
1. How old are you?
Person 1: I am 25 years old.

Person 1 : Yes I do. Because I need safety
Person 2: Sure !!
4. Would you like to have full control of your appliances at home?
Person 1: Great, sounds interesting
Person 2: That's what i've wanted for a long time
5. Do you know about Iot applied to Smart Home ?
Person 1: Sure, I have ever used
Person 2: Yes, I i have heard.
6. Do I want a Smart Home?
Person 1: Yes, of course that's what I've been dreaming of
Person 2: Sure!!
1.2. After using Smart Home
2. What is your experience of using smart home ?
Person 1 : Currently, my family has been using the smart home model for 6 months. And the
experience can be said to be great.
Person 2: Now I can control everything in the house, it's amazing.
3. How much will it cost to make a smart home?
Person 1: The cost will depend on how many smart devices you want to add to the system, but
typically for under $100 you can start your own smart home system, the setup is pretty easy by
connect all devices to the free network the mobile app can listen to.
Person 2: Seems quite expensive compared to people these days.
4. During the using process, what is your advantage point that you are satisfied?
Person 1 : Convenient and Energy Efficient
Person 2 : During my time of using, the point that I like most about smart home is the
interactivity and fast response, helping me complete many tasks in the house. Thanks to that,
I save a lot of time and effort.
5. During the using process, what is your disadvantage point that makes you feel uncomfortable?
Person 1 : The point that I amnot satisfied with at smart home is probably that the applications
to manage virtual assistants are only released in foreign markets such as the US, Canada or
17. other European countries, but not in the market. Vietnamese school. In particular, the
commands to command and communicate with devices must be used in English. This has been
a huge hindrance to my grandparents and can make it difficult for a lot of users, especiallythose
who do not speak English.
Person 2: The price for each sensor is a bit expensive and More Technical Security Threats
2. Survey
Here is the list of result from online survey, the survey has 10 participants as of now. There are two
types of participant in the survey, the first one is the people who have no knowledge and
experience about smart home, and the other one who is business, expert, or the people have the
knowledge and experience about Smart Home.
18.
19.
20.
21.
22.
23. 3. Finding of research and analysis of result
After collecting and analyzing the data, I can be able to provide 3 main points for the research. But first of
all, we will discuss about the first one
1. Using smart home can be able to save the time, improve and increase the users ‘quality of life In
order to prove it, I’m going to provide some evidences.
In the process of interviewing Person 1, he said that “during my time of using, the point that I like most
about smart home is the interactivity and fast response, helping me complete many tasks in the house.
Thanks to that, I save a lot of time and effort”, in his opinion, the smart home helps him to finish some
tasks in the house without wasting the time and also save lots of time. Moreover, according to the
interview Person 2, he said that “In general, having a smart home can bring a wealth of utilities as well as
save time”, so we can say Person 1 and Person 2 has the same thought is that smart home can save their
time.
24. In addition, we can see that the statistics of the results of the 7th question in the online survey which is
asking about the advantage of smart home. The answer “increasedenergy efficiency”and “It can help save
precious time” has been selected for 5 times, answer “Convenience” is selected 6 times. So, for the most
of participant, they think that smart home is convenient, it can be able to save time. Let consider the other
question of survey, the 10th question, it has asked the participant that which features do they often use?
2. The security of smart home is secure
The security of smart home is reallypoor, becauseallof the hardware and software we import from abroad
so the security is not guaranteed. Person 1said that “The Internet security risk of the IoT lies with both
users and devices. The famous network security firms in the US or Vietnam identified that IoT devices were
not designed with security in mind. In most cases, there is no way to set up security on the device itself.”
And Person 2 said that “Simply put, the hardware we buy routers, we are also buying from foreign brands,
we obviously cannot guarantee security. It cannot be hard to say that we are safe when everything is
connected, but all routers, switches, wifi are using foreign hardware, then network transmission
infrastructure is one of them.”
In the survey, we can see the answer that is voted the most in the question of challenges facing smart
home in Hanoi is security.
3. The cost of building a smart home is expensive and not reasonable for many families
According to Person , he thinks that the cost to build a smart home currently on the Hanoi market is too
expensive, the price difference between designing a smart home according to an apartment house and a
villa is too large. His opinion is showed in the answer: “Misinterpretation of prices. A representative of a
25. smart home solution provider saidthat the current price to deploy basicsmart home applications including
lighting system, heater, television, curtains, security ..., with shared house about 25 million VND / house.
As for the villa, it is about 3-4 times.
This price is considered reasonable, but many previous customers have received information about the
cost of installing a smart home at a very large price (tens of thousands of USD / unit), so it has eliminated
the psychology of searching. understand the product. This is the same barrier that prevents smart homes
from becoming popular with everyone.”
In the survey, the question asks about the disadvantage of smart home, expensive is the most chosen
answer with 7 votes.
VI. Secondary Research
During my research, I have read books and researched documents on the internet about topicthat interest
me. From that process, I got a deeper understanding of Internet of Thing (IOT) and my project.
List of other internet sources:

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/336325413_IoT_for_smart_homes
These documents have helped me better understand what I amplanning to do. Not only that, it also helps
me to refer to the applications I have before so that I can think more and develop more features for the
product.
Mistakes I still make :
When conducting the research, I found lots of documentation involved to Smart Home, but I did not read
or refuse to find out the origin of those papers, most of these papers are unchecked and of unknown
origin. In addition, the questions for methods in the information gathering process or in the interview,
survey are not focused on the deep issue. Instead I just ask general questions such as whether participant
is satisfied with the smart home, how old are the users or what their name is, it can be able to say those
questions are redundant and unnecessary questions. Moreover, the delay in doing small tasks, survey,
interview and observation which affected the quality of the reports because I had to do them for a short
time after a series of days of delay like it leaves the questions that I prepared sketchy and doesn't gather
as much data as needed.
If I have more time for future research I will:
After completing the research report, I have learned a lot of things or skills which are really useful and can
help me a lot in my future work or other studies in the future. Some of the typical lessons and methods to
improve research’s quality that I've learned through experience such as I need to choose documents with
high confidence and clear origin, need to prepare a large number of problem-focused questions or
research objectives, don't add general questions like I have did in this report. In addition, the most
important and necessary thing to improve the quality of the report as well as my own improvement is to
stop being a procrastinator, work hard and manage my time more efficiently by creating a to-do list, in
which each task will have its own deadline so that I can complete them on time and avoid delaying. In a
nutshell, preparation knowledge and understanding about these research methodologies is an
indispensable thing while carrying out research projects.
27. VII. Conclusion
In conclusion, the report has discussedabout the impact of smart home to the people who are using smart
home. With the report, I have wonderful experiences and achieve some helpful skills like collecting data,
analyzing data, and especially researching skills. With these skills I can be able to improve myself in order
to sever my future job.
