In December 2014, as the year was coming to a close, we conducted a survey to better understand marketing trends in 2014 and how internet marketers expected those trends to change in 2015. One of the major findings that our survey revealed is that Lead Generation ranked as the #1 challenge facing online agencies in 2015.

Some other major findings that our survey reported: referrals are anticipated to be the #1 source for new leads, and SEO and website development are expected to be the most in demand services for 2015.

  3. 3. Typical Small Business Client's Monthly Online Marketing Spend in 2014 Monthly online marketing budgets vary widely, but the majority spend is between $500 - $2,500 per month. To begin the survey, we wanted to understand what the typical small business clients monthly budget was in 2014. We learned that monthly budgets have a very wide range; however, 15% spend over $2,500 per month and over 65% spend over $500 per month.   4. 4. Typical Small Business Client's Monthly Online Marketing Spend in 2014 Small business clients devoted over 62% of their budgets to website development and SEO. PPC, Email Marketing, and Social Media each represented a significant percentage of online marketing budgets, but over 62% of budgets were allocated to website development and SEO.   5. 5. Online Agencies Report Their Average Price Per Website In 2014 51% of websites for small businesses are priced between $1,500 - $4,000. Website budgets vary greatly with over 16% in the budget range of less than $800. The majority of websites cost between $1,501-$4,000. Higher end websites are also in demand. Almost 64% of websites are priced over $1,500. Outsourcing Marketing Services in 2014 Online marketers heavily depended on outsourcing to successfully deliver high-quality services to their clients in 2014. 59% of online agencies surveyed said that they outsourced search engine optimization. Survey participants were asked to select all of the services they outsourced in 2014 and were allowed to make multiple selections. 59% selected SEO as an outsourced service. We were surprised to see that only 27% outsourced email marketing. While reputation manage- ment. a relatively new offering for many. was outsourced by 24% of online marketing agencies surveyed.   7. 7. Online Marketing Agencies Expect to Face Challenge in 2015 Lead Generation ranked as the #1 challenge online marketing agencies expect to face in 2015. The top causes for concern in 2015 are: "Service/ Product Effectiveness", "Service/ Product Quality, " and "Competitors. ” However, the greatest challenge that online agencies are facing is "Lead Generation, " which by far, outranked all of the other top causes for concern in 2015.   8. 8. Online Agencies Anticipate Their Most Important Sources for New Leads in 2015 Over 50% of new leads are expected to come from referrals. Agencies expect to get leads from a variety of sources. but more than 50% said that they expect to see referrals as their #1 source for leads. The 2nd most popular source of leads is SEO.   9. 9. Changing Online Marketing Budgets in 2015 72% of online agencies expect their ”client’s” marketing budgets to increase in 2015. Of online marketing agencies surveyed, 2296 expected their client's marketing budgets to increase significantly and over 50% expected a small increase. Agencies are optimistic for 2015 with over 95% expecting to see budgets either increase or remain the same. Tried and True Marketing Services Will Be in Demand in 2015 New websites and good website placement(s) in search engines, the foundations of a digital strategy, are services that participants expect to see as the most in demand for small business in 2015. While much of the media buzz is around newer services like marketing automation, reputation management, and website analytics, surveyparticipants expect the most in demand services to be more traditional offerings. 64% of agencies surveyed expect website development to be in the top 3 most in demand services. 67% of agencies surveyed said they expect SEO to be one of the top 3 most in demand services. Social media also has a strong showing with 38% of respondents expecting it to be in the top 3 most in demand services.
