2. Challenge your
“At some point, you have to make a
decision. Boundaries don’t keep other
people out.
They fence you in. Life is messy. That’s
how we’re made. So, you can waste your
lives drawing lines. Or you can live your
life crossing them. But there are some
lines that are way too dangerous to cross.
Here’s what I know: if you’re willing
to take the chance, the view from the
other side is spectacular.
”Meredith Grey, Greys Anatomi
3. Dear Lady
LCI 2017 in Sønderborg will be all about cross-
ing boundaries. Not the dangerous boundaries,
but the ones that are developing, thoughtful,
amazing and - most of all - fun.
During your stay in Sønderborg, you will not
only be in inspiring network with ladies from
all over the world, you’ll also be inspired by the
vitality of the region.
Here five duke castles bear witness to the past as
duchy, and a historic battlefield near the town is
preserved as an important monument to bloody
wars, which made Denmark a small kingdom,
but also triggered the creation of the democratic
welfare state the country is today.
Sønderborg is in the borderland, and between
1864 and 1920 the region was German. Since
then, there has been tension, but in recent de-
cades the national majorities and minorities on
both sides of the border have lived in peaceful
coexistence with increasing cooperation. For
example, this region has now formed Europe's
first cross-border cultural agreement.
The physical border to Germany is less than
30 minutes drive away, and Sønderborg is in
itself a hub of cultural diversity with a unique
cultural history and lots of local flavour.
You’ll find the city in a beautiful countryside
environment surrounded by the blue sea.
Here is space to breathe, wind down and be
creative. At the same time Sønderborg is known
for its entrepreneurial spirit. Our companies
develop green technologies, and Sønderborg’s
former industrial harbour is being transformed
by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry’s
master plan into a new hot spot with innovative
companies, culture centre and hotel, which is a
showcase for the city’s efforts to create sustain-
ability.
In Sønderborg people are not afraid of ambi-
tion, thinking big, and being innovative and
practical, quite a metropolitan mindset, actu-
ally. This is a way of crossing boundaries too.
We and the Municipality of Sønderborg look
forward to welcoming you in Sønderborg in the
last weekend of August 2017.
Love from

4. FUN - Universe
A hands-on science theme park.
Here both children and adults
play their way to knowledge of
science.
HISTORY
- Dybbøl Hills
with redoubts around
Dybbøl Mill is one of
the most famous battle-
grounds of European
history. In History
Centre Dybbøl you can
experience the life of a
soldier in the 1864 war
Sønderborg might not be the biggest
town around. But it sure has a lot to
offer. The heart of the town is situated
right at the banks of Als Sound creating
a charming waterfront with cosy cafes
and sailing ships.
Here, people meet in between history
and future visualised by the more than
800 years old Castle of Sønderborg
and the new harbour front area designed
by the world-renowned architect
Frank Gehry.
Shopping opportunities include a brand
new shopping centre and a pedestrian
area with more than 80 shops. They
offer a large selection of Scandinavian
and Danish fashion and design.
Sønderborg has it all
5. ART - Augustiana
Sculpture Park
and Art Centre
is Denmark’s largest sculp-
ture park located at Duke
Castle Augustenburg right
by the fjord. Indoors, in a
mansion, you’ll find a gallery
of contemporary art.
SEA - The water surrounding
Sønderborg has played an important
role in the development of the city.
When in Sønderborg, you are always
a stone’s throw from the water. Take
a dip from one of the many beaches
along Sønderborg’s 250 kilometres of
coastline or discover Sønderborg from
the sea.
MOVEMENT
- The Gendarm Path
The placement of the current Danish/
German border was determined by a
referendum – a plebiscite - in 1920.
During the period from 1920 to 1958
the blue border gendarms were patrol-
ling along the coast by foot. Walk in
their footsteps on the patrol route, a
beautiful and varying hiking trail from
Padborg to Høruphav
(74 km).
...and a little more
THE HARBOUR FRONT in the
heart of Sønderborgevolves in these years
to become the most innovative space in the city. The
view from the harbour promenade to Dybbøl Mill
and the historic battlefield reflects how conflict and
innovation is intertwined in the border region. The
harbour also is the location for Alsion - Sønderborg’s
new centre of knowledge and culture.

7. TILTING FIELD
One of the cultural specialties in Sønderborg and the
region is tilting - to catch a small ring with a spear when
riding a galloping horse. Tournaments are held in many
cities in the summer. The sport originates from the ducal
times, and for more than 100 years Sønderborg has had
a great tilting field in the middle of the city. Every year
in July about 500 riders compete and the whole town
is partying for several days with visits of up to 50,000.
Special events are held in large tents with capacity for
more than 1,000. One famous event is Denmark’s biggest
Men’s Lunch. So Ladies, lets gather to make an even bet-
ter party! I any case Sønderborg has solid traditions and
capacity to settle large events.
CASTLE OF
SØNDERBORG
The 800 year old castle has been
the seat of the duchy, and the city is
built right next to it. Here is a fine
Renaissance church with a chapel of
the Dukes family. The castle is now
housing a national history museum,
but the Knight’s Hall is used for events
and concerts. It has capacity for 250
people.
ALSION
Sønderborg has the will and the ability to develop and
realise creative and innovative ideas. In 2007, by the
opening of the building Alsion the city got a true land-
mark of the fusion between science, art and business.
The building is housing a department of the University
of Southern Denmark, with a programme focusing on
border research and European Studies. This attracts a
lot of foreign students making it the most international
campus in Denmark.
In the middle of the building you’ll find a world class
concert hall which is home to the regional South Jutland
Symphony Orchestra. The concert hall seats 900 people.
8. VIKINGS
Sønderborg is located where Europe meets with Scan-
dinavia and the Nordic countries. 1,000 years ago and
more, many Vikings lived in this region. You can reach
a viking activity centre less than an hour’s drive from
Sønderborg, either in Schleswig to the south of the
border or going west to Ribe.
The old town Ribe was early an important commercial
hub and is the first Danish city that is mentioned in writ-
ten sources. It was around the year of 855. Ribe has just
been named Europe’s most beautiful small town by a
British travel guide.
FULL COFFE TABLE
In Sønderborg and the region of
Southern Jutland “a full coffee
table” refers to a tradition of
inviting for coffee served with
at least 14 different types of
traditional cake or cookie.

the theme park LEGOLAND in the
town of Billund where this brainy

9. ISLANDS
AND FAIRY TALES
If you travel to the east of Sønderborg – maybe
by ferry – you’ll quickly reach picturesque is-
lands such as Ærø or the city of Odense, which
is the hometown of the world famous fairy tale
poet and author Hans Christian Andersen.
From here you’ll be in the capital Copenhagen
within two hours by car - even less time by train.
CULTURAL BREEZE
Around two hours north of Sønderborg, you’ll find
Denmark’s second largest city, Aarhus, which in 2017
is European Capital of Culture. The title was won in
close combat with Sønderborg and the border region.
But in Sønderborg we have forgiven Aarhus. The
candidature has sent Sønderborg up in top form on
the cultural activity scale, and Sønderborg cooperates
with Aarhus to set up cultural events in 2017.
So in Sønderborg you’ll feel the breeze of the capital
of culture.

MARITIME HISTORY
A half hour drive from Sønderborg along the
beautiful Flensborg Fjord and across the border
you’ll find the city of Flensburg with approx.
140,000 inhabitants. Until 1864, Flensburg
was Denmark’s second largest harbour city.
Here there was a tradition of trade with rum,
tobacco and sugar cane from the Danish colony
in the West Indies. You can still feel the mari-
time atmosphere and see the many charming
merchant’s houses and yards.
10. Sønderborg with 30,000 inhabitants
is the hub of a dense network of small
towns and villages with many activists
who are making an effort for the local
community.
We are 76,000in the Munici-
pality of Sønderborg, 700,000 in the
region Southern Jutland-Schleswig
and 4 million in the Danish-German
region.
Our forests, sea and 250 kilometres
of coastline motivates for leisure and
physical activities, and Sønderborg
has a large cultural
programme that offers at least
as many events as the year has days.
Cooperation in our cross cultural
region means that a number of special
events are within reach.
Sønderborg has a rich tradition of entrepreneur-
ship and technological development. More
than half of the area’s industrial enterprises
are today dealing with green energy solutions.
Through Sønderborg’s ProjectZero, citizens,
institutions, and businesses are striving to make
Sønderborg CO2-neutral by
2029. This project has been included in the
Clinton Climate Positive Development Program.
In Sønderborg
we do it!
11. A German minority population means that
Sønderborg has a tradition of accommodating
multiple cultures. Today, more than 120
nationalities live in the city,
and the campus of the University of Southern
Denmark is the country’s most international.
Our exciting cultural heritage,
coastal line and proximity to
Germany makes the Sønderborg
area one of the country’s most
visited holiday destinations with
an annual 3 million visitors. Also
Sønderborg is a powerful
hub for shopping.
Five castles in the region are illustrating the
story of the duchiesof Schleswig
and Holstein, and Sønderborg has one of the
nation’s most important sites of remembrance,
Dybbøl, where Denmark in 1864 was besieged
by Prussia and eventually had to give up a third
of its territory. The events were crucial for the
development of the Europe we know today.
