Students in LFS 400: Audio Storytelling create podcasts. Often, this is the first time students have used digital media in a formal, academic way. A common frustration for undergrads is that they feel their work is not applied, or that it goes unseen (or unheard) outside of the academy. Podcasting allows them to approach their studies in a creative way, and in a medium that allows them to share their enthusiasm outside of the classroom, be it with family, friends, prospective students, or the general public. As such, they are also perfect candidates for portfolios.
I'll discuss some of the issues we address in the class: creative use of technology, accountability for one’s work, intellectual property, collaborative workshopping and feedback, media literacy, and public outreach. I’d also like to ask the audience what type of portfolio would allow for the greatest exposure and impact of these student-created resources?
Workshops include Audio editing, Copyright & Creative Commons, Story structure, Interviewing, Writing for the ear, Journalism ethics, Performing your script + guest lectures
Start slow and increase the complexity of the assignments. Group assignments are used for knowledge sharing (with a group multiplier for accountability).
The reflection can take on any form of digital media. This year that included: tweets, video diaries, an online game, animation, a series of annotated gifs and some websites
In the post-Serial years, students have a fluency in podcasting. They like to have the opportunity to express themselves in this format
Podcast analysis assignment
Students can apply the knowledge they’re most passionate about to their podcast. They can also tie their discipline-specific knowledge to their own lives.
