The force produced by circulating blood on the walls of the body's
arteries, or main blood vessels, is known as Blood Pressure.When
blood pressure is excessively high, it is known as Hypertension or
High Blood Pressure.

Blood pressure is expressed as two numbers.When the heart contracts or beats, the first number
represents the pressure of blood flowing in vessels which contains blood.The second number
(diastolic) is the pressure in the arteries while the heart is at rest between beats.
If the systolic blood pressure is 140 mmHg on two different days and the
diastolic blood pressure is 90 mmHg on both days, you probably have
hypertension.
Causes of Hypertension
There is no known cause of increased blood pressure in most
individuals. But there are two types of Hypertensions having
different causes.
1. Primary Hypertension
Primary hypertension, also known as essential hypertension, is a kind of high blood pressure that
develops slowly over a long period of time.The majority of people have this type.
Some individuals are prone to hypertension due to their genetic origin.This might be due to
inherited genetic disorders from their parents.Weight issues can be caused by unhealthy lifestyles.
Hypertension can be increased by being overweight or obese.
2. Secondary Hypertension
An underlying condition can create high blood pressure in certain individuals. Secondary hypertension
is a kind of high blood pressure that appears unexpectedly and causes higher blood pressure than
primary hypertension.
It can lead to various conditions including Kidney disease, Heart disease, Sleeping Disorders,Thyroid
problems, certain medications, such as birth control pills, cold remedies, decongestants, over-the-
counter pain relievers and some prescription drugs.
Symptoms of Hypertension
Hypertension is usually a hidden condition. Many people will not show any signs or
symptoms. It may take years, if not decades, for the disease to develop to the point when
symptoms are noticeable. Headaches, difficulty breathing, and nosebleeds are common
signs and symptoms of high blood pressure, but they aren't specific and typically don't
appear until the condition has progressed to a severe or life-threatening level.
Risk and Complications
High blood pressure conditions in any individual have many
risks and complications. Some major risks factors are -
 Age - As people become older, the chances of having high blood pressure increase.
 Too much consumption of Alcohol - Too much consumption of alcoholic beverages can damage your
heart and may affect blood pressure too.
 Overweight or obesity - Being overweight or obese can increase the risk of high blood pressure.
 Lack of Physical activities in routine - Inactive people have greater heart rates.The harder your heart
has to work with each contraction and the greater the stress on your arteries, the higher your heart rate
is. Obesity is also related to a lack of physical activity.
 Too much Sodium (Salt) consumption - When people consume too much salt in their diet, the body
retains fluid, which boosts your blood pressure.
 ConsumingTobacco and Cigarettes - Smoking or chewing tobacco not only momentarily increases
blood pressure, but the chemicals in tobacco can also damage the lining of your artery walls.This can
restrict the arteries and put people at risk for heart disease. Smoking can potentially raise your risk of
heart disease.

There are two types of variables that lead to high blood pressure -
Modifiable and unmodifiable. Modifiable variables are those that you can modify, such as
your diet and amount of activity. Others, such as genetics and age, are beyond your control.
If your doctor finds that your high blood pressure is caused mainly by modifiable variables,
and your blood pressure readings return to normal after you make adjustments, you can
discuss quitting the medicines.
You may not be able to quit taking your medication if your high blood pressure is caused by
non-modifiable variables such as family history or unpredictable factors such as chronic
illness.This is especially true for older individuals, as age is an independent risk factor for
hypertension and is related to more complicated chronic disease management.

hypertensive patients -
 Add more green veggies and less meat - A plant-based diet is a simplistic method to
boost fiber while lowering salt and harmful high in saturated fat from dairy and meat
consumption. Increase your daily intake of fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, and whole
grains. Consider healthy lean proteins like fish, chicken, or tofu instead of red meat.
 Avoiding Sweet and Sugary food - Sugary foods and beverages are high in empty
calories but low in nutrients. If you're craving something sweet, go for fresh fruit or
modest quantities of dark chocolate that hasn't been overly sweetened. According to
studies, consuming dark chocolate on a daily basis can help lower blood pressure.
