2. REDUCE
What is reducing?
Lessening the amount
of resources that are
consumed. We should
only use as much as we
need to get by.
Reducing at home:
Turn off the lights when
you leave a room
Turn off the water while
you brush your teeth
Take a bath instead of a
shower
Use both sides of a sheet of
paper
Use cloth grocery bags
instead of the plastic or
paper ones
3. REUSE
What is reusing?
Finding ways to use
materials again so
that they don’t go
to waste.
Reusing in The Three
Little Pigs:
What could the little
pig use the straw for,
besides building a
house?
What could the little
pig use the sticks for,
besides building a
house?
4. Recycle
Definition:
Recycling means that a
certain material can be
reused either in the
same way or a different
way than it was
originally used
5. What Can we recycle?
Glass Jars and Bottles
Aluminum Cans
Plastic Bottles (has to
have 1 or 2 symbol)
Milk
Juice
Detergent bottles
Newspapers and any
paper
Cardboard
6. Why Recycle!?
To slow down to rate at which we use landfills
It saves energy because we don’t have to start from
raw materials when we recycle
Some Facts:
The average American produces 100 garbage cans full of
garbage every year
Every three months we throw away enough aluminum to
rebuild every plane in every airline in America
Each year we throw away the equivalent of 30 million trees
in newspapers
Bottom line is: It helps our environment

7. Recycling in Ohio
Each state forms their own laws and they are
enforced within the communities
Ohio EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)
The agency that enforces Ohio’s laws
Their goal is “to protect the environment and public
health by ensuring compliance with environmental
laws”

8. Evaluation Questions
In your group answer these three questions:
What are ways we can reduce amount of
waste in our house?
How can we reuse the items we worked
with today?
Why is recycling important and how can
you do it at home?
