Experience
Learning Assistance and Resource Center (LARC)Tutor West Chester, PA
Level III Supplemental Instructor January, 2013 – May,2016
The LARC is a center for students at West Chester that allows them to have easily accessible and free
tutoring for high-risk students or courses. Focus for tutoring is the development of independent learning
skills and encouraging students to grow more confident with their own abilities. Courses tutored include:
Organic Chemistry I & II, Introduction to Organic Chemistry, and General Chemistry II. On average
sessions consisted of three students in a classroom setting and twelve hours per week. In addition,
provided individualized tutoring for Biochemistry and Calculus I.
Summer Intern for Dr. Felix Goodson West Chester, PA
Organic Chemistry Intern Summer 2013 and Summer 2014
Worked alongside Dr. Felix Goodson to conduct research into the synthesis and kinetic properties of a
class of photo reactive compounds. Research continued over two summers and concluded with the
opportunity to present the compiled findings at the ACS conference in San Francisco in 2014 in the
Undergraduates Section. Analysis of these molecules included synthesis, separation, recrystallization,
and characterization.
Summer Intern at Merck & Co. West Point, PA
Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, & Drug Metabolism Intern June 2015 – August 2015
Under the mentorship of Dr. Karsten Menzel, I was responsible for investigating the metabolism of and
the kinetics for generation of a chiral alcohol from a prochiral ketone in rat liver tissue. The emphasis in
this investigation was the effect of gender on the stereogenic reduction and identification of extraneous
metabolites using selective reaction monitoring on a UP/LC-MS. Kinetics data was obtained for several
compounds for generation of structure activity relationship as well as development of analytical methods
and enzyme assays to find conditions to optimize the observed reaction as well as to identify the enzyme.
Research assistant for Dr. Kurt Kolasinski West Chester,PA
Physical Chemistry Intern August, 2015 - December,2015
Continued previous student research into the laser ablation and electrochemicalanodization of aluminum.
Used scanning electron microscopy to observe the formation of nanostructures on the aluminum surface.
Observed the quenching of the photoluminescent properties of porous silicon powder after etching in
hydrofluoric acid and performed alkylation reactions with long-chain alkenes to observe changes in these
properties. Atom transfer radicalpolymerization (ATRP) was independently investigated and developed
as a method to coat the powder in a polymer to prevent intercalation of oxygen into the bulk matrix.
2. Summer Intern at Bristol-Myers Squibb New Brunswick,NJ
Drug Product Science & Technology Intern May 2016 – August 2016
Worked with Dr. Madhushree Gokhale and other formulation chemists to characterize the enzyme-
mediated degradation of surfactant added to monoclonal antibody solutions. Provided information to
process engineers to determine where the enzyme was carried over in the processing of the antibodies
and assisted in the development of methods to reduce this host-cell protein carryover. Internship
concluded with a presentation to the PharmaceuticalDevelopment group at Bristol-Myers Squibb.
Leadership and Activities
Gamma Sigma Epsilon, Chemistry Honor Society West Chester, PA
Treasurer, Vice-President December, 2014 – May, 2016
This honors chemistry society is open to all students with over a 3.0 in chemistry courses at West Chester
University. As the elected Treasurer, focused on allocating money to different areas the society is
interested in exploring and collecting and depositing the fees necessary to run the chapter. As vice
president, assisted in the inauguration ceremony for the chapter as well as recruiting and organizing
activities for the group. This fraternity will provide more opportunities for the Chemistry students of West
Chester to connect to the campus.
Alchemist Society West Chester, PA
Vice-President August 2013 – May 2014
Nominated and elected for the position. Assisted in the organization and participated in events of the
chemistry club on campus, such as Chem-Craze, school orientations for potential incoming chemistry
majors, and working alongside faculty to act as a between for the administration and the student body.
Skills
Technical: Extensive use of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences,Microsoft Office, and Igor Pro
software,as well as Chemdraw for presenting chemical studies, MassLynx and Empowered mass-
spectrometry software for the use of identifying metabolites and kinetic studies. Maintaining both paper
and electronic notebooks. Using literature to develop enzymatic assays for both activity and
characterization of products.
Laboratory: Research has provided opportunities to become proficient with use of Nuclear Magnetic
Resonance,Gas Chromatography –Mass Spectrometry and Liquid Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry,
Flash Chromatography, and UV-Vis Spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy, electrochemistry, and
polymzerization experience has also been obtained. Extensive experience prepping and performing in-
vitro studies with animal tissue.
Future Research:At The University of Chicago I plan to obtain my Ph.D. in Chemical-Biology with a
focus in protein engineering. I aim to develop a more in depth understanding of protein-protein
interactions, modern techniques for protein synthesis, and applying this technology to in-vivo signaling.
