Hydrogen System Improves Fuel Economy
on Diesel Van Between 8.6% and 17%.
Escondido, California -
Between December 23rd
and December 31st
2012 Hydrogen Power Systems
(HPS) installed and tested a Series 200
Hydrogen Enhanced Combustion System on
a DHL delivery van owned and operated by
Belt Transport Inc. of Ontario, California.
HPS performed thirteen separate tests
around Escondido over fixed routes to
determine the improvements in fuel
economy the Series 200 System might
provide to delivery trucks of this type.
The truck, a 2006 Chevrolet C2500
Express Cargo Van, is equipped with a 6.6
liter Dura Max turbocharged diesel engine.
No mechanical modifications were made to
this factory stock vehicle except for the
addition of a 3/8th
inch hose attached to
the back of the air filter housing. This hose
permits Hydrogen and Oxygen gases in a
low-pressure vapor form to be mixed with the normal incoming air just before
this modified air stream flows into the engine.

HPS however did temporarily modify the van’s fuel system by adding a 5 gallon
test tank and switching valves. This allowed HPS to accurately measure fuel
consumption within 1/100th
of a gallon during the thirteen fuel economy tests by
switching to the test tank at the start of each fuel economy test run.
HPS performed four separate sets of fuel economy tests:
1. Set 1 - With the truck empty (no cargo load) on a 42.1 mile fixed route.
2. Set 2 – With the truck anchored on a dynamometer at a speed appropriate
load accelerating and decelerating between 20 and 50 miles per hour until
one-half gallon of diesel fuel was consumed for each Set 2 Test.
3. Set 3 – With the truck loaded with a pallet of bricks (5,200 lb. load) on a
67.5 mile fixed route,
4. Set 4 – With the truck loaded with a pallet of bricks (5,200 lb. load) on a
67.5 mile fixed route with an auxiliary fuel map device attached via the
OBDII connection.
Set 1 Tests were performed on a fixed 41.2 mile route that included:
1. 6.6 miles of stop and go city driving averaging about 30 miles per hour
(North Center City Avenue),
2. 18.8 miles of “back country” uphill and downhill driving with a few stop
lights, averaging about 55 miles per hour (Old Highway 395),
3. 16.7 miles of freeway driving averaging about 65 miles per hour
(Interstate 15 between Old Highway 395 and exit 51, Fallbrook).
HPS first drove the van on the Set 1, Test 1 route running on fuel in the test tank
with the Hydrogen system off to get a fuel economy baseline.
HPS then drove the Set 1 Test route two more times at different hydrogen
settings. Here are the results:
1. Set 1, Test 1: Hydrogen system Off,
a. Fuel consumed – 2.132 gallons
b. 41.2 miles ÷ 2.132 gallons = 19.324 miles per gallon baseline.
2. Set 1, Test 2: Hydrogen system On (20 amp setting),
a. Fuel consumed - 2.030 gallons
b. 41.2 miles ÷ 2.030 gallons = 20.295 miles per gallon,
a 5% improvement on an unloaded truck
(20.295 mpg ÷ 19.324 mpg = 1.05024)
3. Set 1, Test 3: Hydrogen system On (30 amp setting),
a. Fuel consumed - 2.009 gallons
41.2 miles ÷ 2.009 gallons = 20.507 miles per gallon,
a 6.1% improvement on an unloaded truck
(20.507 mpg ÷ 19.324 mpg = 1.06121)

On 12-26-12 The Set 2 Tests placed the van on a chassis dynamometer at a
speed varying between 20 and 50 miles per hour with fixed dynamometer loads
and four different Hydrogen settings until one-half gallon of diesel fuel was
consumed for each test sequence. Here are the results:
1. Set 2, Test 1: Hydrogen Off until one-half gallon of fuel consumed:
a. Time traveled: 6 minutes, 55 seconds
b. Distance traveled: 4.2 miles ÷.5gal = 8.4mpg
2. Set 2, Test 2: Hydrogen On (10 amps) until one-half gallon of fuel
consumed:
a. Time traveled: 7 minutes, 8 seconds
b. Distance traveled: 4.3 miles
3. Set 2, Test 3: Hydrogen On (20 amps) until one-half gallon of fuel
consumed:
a. Time traveled: 7 minutes, 59 seconds
b. Distance traveled: 4.9 miles ÷ .5gal = 9.8mpg
4. Set 2, Test 4: Hydrogen On (30 amps) until one-half gallon of fuel
consumed:
a. Time traveled: 6 minutes, 55 seconds
b. Distance traveled: 4.2 miles
Conclusion: The Set 2 Tests showed the 20 amp setting produced a 16.6% fuel
economy improvement.
8 minutes (480 seconds) ÷ 6 minutes 55 seconds (415 seconds) = 16%
4.9 miles (9.8mpg) ÷ 4.2 miles (8.4mpg) = 17% (1.1666)
In the Set 3 Tests HPS drove the truck loaded with a pallet of bricks
(5,200 lb. load)
1. The Set 3 Tests followed an extended 67.6 mile test circuit that included:
a. 6.6 miles of stop and go city driving averaging about 30 miles per
hour (North Center City Avenue),
b. 18.8 miles of “back country” uphill and downhill driving with a few
stop lights, averaging about 55 miles per hour (Old Highway 395),
c. 42.2 miles of freeway driving averaging about 70 miles per hour
(Interstate 15 between Old Highway 395 and exit 1 on State Route
215 North, Murrieta-Hot Springs).
Here are the results:
1. Set 3, Test 1: Hydrogen system Off,
a. Fuel consumed – 3.939 gallons (68.3 miles because of .8 detour)
b. 68.3 miles ÷ 3.939 gallons = 17.339 miles per gallon.
2. Set 3, Test 2: Hydrogen system On (20 amp setting),
a. Fuel consumed - 3.638 gallons

b. 67.4 miles ÷ 3.638 gallons = 18.526 miles per gallon,
a 6.8% improvement.
3. Set 3, Test 3: Hydrogen system On (30 amp setting),
a. Fuel consumed - 3.631 gallons
b. 67.6 miles ÷ 3.631 gallons = 18.617 miles per gallon,
a 7.4% improvement.
4. Set 3, Test 4: Hydrogen system On (40 amp setting),
a. Fuel consumed - 3.761 gallons
b. 67.5 miles ÷ 3.761 gallons = 17.947 miles per gallon,
a 3.5% improvement.
Conclusion: The Set 3 Tests showed the 30 amp setting produced a 7.4% fuel
economy improvement on a loaded truck.
(18.617 mpg ÷ 17.339 mpg = 1.0737066)
In the Set 4 Tests the truck was loaded with a pallet of bricks (5,200 lb. load)
with an auxiliary fuel map device attached via the OBDII connection. Here are
the results:
1. Set 4, Test 1 with the hydrogen On (30 amp) and the auxiliary fuel map
device On with no “adjustment” miles prior to test run:
a. Fuel consumed: 3.655 gallons
b. 67.5 miles ÷ 3.655 = 18.47 miles per gallon,
a 6.5% improvement (18.47 ÷ 17.339 = 1.065104)
2. Set 4, Test 2 the hydrogen On (30 amp) and the with the auxiliary fuel
map device On with 120 “adjustment” miles prior to test run:
a. Fuel consumed: 3.585 gallons
b. 67.5 miles ÷ 3.585 = 18.83 miles per gallon,
an 8.6% improvement (18.828 ÷ 17.339 = 1.085875)
Conclusion: The Set 4 Tests showed the 30 amp setting produced an 8.6% fuel
economy improvement on a loaded truck with the auxiliary fuel map device
attached. (18.828 ÷ 17.339 = 1.085875)
Observation: The actual fuel savings will depend on the split between freeway
and in town miles driven by this truck. If for example if this truck drives an equal
number of in town and freeway miles the expected fuel savings will be in the
10% to 12% range. (14% in town + 8.6% freeway ÷ 2 = 11.3%)
System Range:
The 1.5 liter water tank (located in the system box) will operate the System for
20 hours (about 1,200 miles) before it needs to be refilled with distilled water.

The 2 liter Bubbler tank (located in the engine compartment) will operate for
about 4,000 miles before it needs to be refilled with RV potable water system
antifreeze.

Escondido, California - Between December 23rd and December 31st 2012 Hydrogen Power Systems (HPS) installed and tested a Series 200 Hydrogen Enhanced Combustion System on a DHL delivery van owned and operated by Belt Transport Inc. of Ontario, California. HPS performed thirteen separate tests around Escondido over fixed routes to determine the improvements in fuel economy the Series 200 System might provide to delivery trucks of this type. The truck, a 2006 Chevrolet C2500 Express Cargo Van, is equipped with a 6.6 liter Dura Max turbocharged diesel engine. No mechanical modifications were made to this factory stock vehicle except for the addition of a 3/8th inch hose attached to the back of the air filter housing. This hose permits Hydrogen and Oxygen gases in a low-pressure vapor form to be mixed with the normal incoming air just before this modified air stream flows into the engine.

This allowed HPS to accurately measure fuel consumption within 1/100th of a gallon during the thirteen fuel economy tests by switching to the test tank at the start of each fuel economy test run. HPS performed four separate sets of fuel economy tests: 1. Set 1 - With the truck empty (no cargo load) on a 42.1 mile fixed route. 2. Set 2 – With the truck anchored on a dynamometer at a speed appropriate load accelerating and decelerating between 20 and 50 miles per hour until one-half gallon of diesel fuel was consumed for each Set 2 Test. 3. Set 3 – With the truck loaded with a pallet of bricks (5,200 lb. load) on a 67.5 mile fixed route, 4. Set 4 – With the truck loaded with a pallet of bricks (5,200 lb. load) on a 67.5 mile fixed route with an auxiliary fuel map device attached via the OBDII connection. Set 1 Tests were performed on a fixed 41.2 mile route that included: 1. 6.6 miles of stop and go city driving averaging about 30 miles per hour (North Center City Avenue), 2. 18.8 miles of “back country” uphill and downhill driving with a few stop lights, averaging about 55 miles per hour (Old Highway 395), 3. 16.7 miles of freeway driving averaging about 65 miles per hour (Interstate 15 between Old Highway 395 and exit 51, Fallbrook). HPS first drove the van on the Set 1, Test 1 route running on fuel in the test tank with the Hydrogen system off to get a fuel economy baseline. HPS then drove the Set 1 Test route two more times at different hydrogen settings. Here are the results: 1. Set 1, Test 1: Hydrogen system Off, a. Fuel consumed – 2.132 gallons b. 41.2 miles ÷ 2.132 gallons = 19.324 miles per gallon baseline. 2. Set 1, Test 2: Hydrogen system On (20 amp setting), a. Fuel consumed - 2.030 gallons b. 41.2 miles ÷ 2.030 gallons = 20.295 miles per gallon, a 5% improvement on an unloaded truck (20.295 mpg ÷ 19.324 mpg = 1.05024) 3. Set 1, Test 3: Hydrogen system On (30 amp setting), a. Fuel consumed - 2.009 gallons 41.2 miles ÷ 2.009 gallons = 20.507 miles per gallon, a 6.1% improvement on an unloaded truck (20.507 mpg ÷ 19.324 mpg = 1.06121)

Here are the results: 1. Set 2, Test 1: Hydrogen Off until one-half gallon of fuel consumed: a. Time traveled: 6 minutes, 55 seconds b. Distance traveled: 4.2 miles ÷.5gal = 8.4mpg 2. Set 2, Test 2: Hydrogen On (10 amps) until one-half gallon of fuel consumed: a. Time traveled: 7 minutes, 8 seconds b. Distance traveled: 4.3 miles 3. Set 2, Test 3: Hydrogen On (20 amps) until one-half gallon of fuel consumed: a. Time traveled: 7 minutes, 59 seconds b. Distance traveled: 4.9 miles ÷ .5gal = 9.8mpg 4. Set 2, Test 4: Hydrogen On (30 amps) until one-half gallon of fuel consumed: a. Time traveled: 6 minutes, 55 seconds b. Distance traveled: 4.2 miles Conclusion: The Set 2 Tests showed the 20 amp setting produced a 16.6% fuel economy improvement. 8 minutes (480 seconds) ÷ 6 minutes 55 seconds (415 seconds) = 16% 4.9 miles (9.8mpg) ÷ 4.2 miles (8.4mpg) = 17% (1.1666) In the Set 3 Tests HPS drove the truck loaded with a pallet of bricks (5,200 lb. load) 1. The Set 3 Tests followed an extended 67.6 mile test circuit that included: a. 6.6 miles of stop and go city driving averaging about 30 miles per hour (North Center City Avenue), b. 18.8 miles of “back country” uphill and downhill driving with a few stop lights, averaging about 55 miles per hour (Old Highway 395), c. 42.2 miles of freeway driving averaging about 70 miles per hour (Interstate 15 between Old Highway 395 and exit 1 on State Route 215 North, Murrieta-Hot Springs). Here are the results: 1. Set 3, Test 1: Hydrogen system Off, a. Fuel consumed – 3.939 gallons (68.3 miles because of .8 detour) b. 68.3 miles ÷ 3.939 gallons = 17.339 miles per gallon. 2. Set 3, Test 2: Hydrogen system On (20 amp setting), a. Fuel consumed - 3.638 gallons

Set 3, Test 3: Hydrogen system On (30 amp setting), a. Fuel consumed - 3.631 gallons b. 67.6 miles ÷ 3.631 gallons = 18.617 miles per gallon, a 7.4% improvement. 4. Set 3, Test 4: Hydrogen system On (40 amp setting), a. Fuel consumed - 3.761 gallons b. 67.5 miles ÷ 3.761 gallons = 17.947 miles per gallon, a 3.5% improvement. Conclusion: The Set 3 Tests showed the 30 amp setting produced a 7.4% fuel economy improvement on a loaded truck. (18.617 mpg ÷ 17.339 mpg = 1.0737066) In the Set 4 Tests the truck was loaded with a pallet of bricks (5,200 lb. load) with an auxiliary fuel map device attached via the OBDII connection. Here are the results: 1. Set 4, Test 1 with the hydrogen On (30 amp) and the auxiliary fuel map device On with no “adjustment” miles prior to test run: a. Fuel consumed: 3.655 gallons b. 67.5 miles ÷ 3.655 = 18.47 miles per gallon, a 6.5% improvement (18.47 ÷ 17.339 = 1.065104) 2. Set 4, Test 2 the hydrogen On (30 amp) and the with the auxiliary fuel map device On with 120 “adjustment” miles prior to test run: a. Fuel consumed: 3.585 gallons b. 67.5 miles ÷ 3.585 = 18.83 miles per gallon, an 8.6% improvement (18.828 ÷ 17.339 = 1.085875) Conclusion: The Set 4 Tests showed the 30 amp setting produced an 8.6% fuel economy improvement on a loaded truck with the auxiliary fuel map device attached. (18.828 ÷ 17.339 = 1.085875) Observation: The actual fuel savings will depend on the split between freeway and in town miles driven by this truck.
