THE HORIZONTAL PLANE STABILITY OF A TURRET MOORED FPSO

This work studies the behavior of a FPSO oil platform when moored in a
conventional turret system. On this study a heuristic model was adopted to describe the
current induced loads on the vessel, as well as a simplified mooring system model.
Routh-Hurwitz stability and eigen value analysis were performed to define the critical
positions of the turret that assure horizontal plane static and dynamic stability. It was
concluded that, usually, the turret is positioned way ahead of what is necessary to assure
stability and, even with industry adopted mooring systems, it is possible to bring the
turret closer to the amidships without any significant loss of stability. The stability
analysis results were compared with numerical and experimental data and obtained
excellent adherence between the three of them.
