1. The History of Lake Powell and Page, Arizona -- Plus Things to See in Page, AZ
Visitors flock to partake in Page, AZ and Lake Powell tours. Set in the picturesque region of northwest
Arizona, Page is one of the United States’ newest municipalities. The city of Page, Arizona was originally
put in place in 1956 as a temporary housing area for workers constructing the Glenn Dam on the
Colorado River. Dam construction was set to take 7 years and, as time passed, the workers and their
families established more permanent dwellings and began putting churches in place. Page was granted
acceptance as a city in 1971 and is now home to approximately 9,000 citizens. The city was named
for John C. Page, Commissioner of the Reclamation Bureau, who helped bring the Glenn Dam and the
hydroelectric and water supply resources to the southwest during a controversial time.
The area surrounding Page, Arizona, as well as the city itself, attracts around 3 million visitors each
year, many of them on tours from Las Vegas. In addition to the natural beauty of the Glenn Canyon,
the Colorado River, and the adjacent Navajo Nation, Lake Powell is also nearby. According to the
official site for the City of Page, AZ, Lake Powell was named for John Wesley Powell, a Civil War vet and
explorer who led a team of 9 explorers on a 1,000 mile expedition to traverse the Colorado River in
1869. In 1871, a second trip was made that produced the first maps of the Colorado River region in the
southwest: propelling that region into development.
Page, AZ and its neighbor, Lake Powell, both offer their many visitors numerous attractions. From a
romantic dinner cruise or a weeklong stay on a lake yacht, to days filled with adventure exploring the
canyons, there is something for everyone. Of course, Lake Powell offers aquatic amenities such as power
boating, paddle boating and rafting.

or Antelope Canyon, for example. Visitors can explore a historical site in the cross-country pilgrimage of
the Mormons, named Hole in the Rock, where Mormon settlers spent well over a month blasting a hole
in a solid rock wall in order to make a path for their wagon train to pass through into the southwestern
portion of Utah. Other popular sites around Lake Powell and Page include: Cathedral Canyon and
Rainbow Bridge.
