6. Capitalize the proper names of specific places
(streets, cities, states, lakes, mountains, etc.).

Liberia or some other country in Africa.
My parents’ best friend lives on Pine Leaf Court in
Raleigh, North Carolina.
7. Capitalize words used to name a region like
"the South" but do not capitalize directions
(points on a compass).
I live in North Raleigh just off of I-440.
My relatives grew up in the Midwest.
Drive east on Pittman Road, then head south.
Travel southwest on Lee Street, then turn right.
8. Capitalize company/brand names, school names,
or organizations used as nouns or adjectives.
I have a serious craving for fried Oreos.
My family buys Kellog’s bread and cereals.
I attend Cary Academy Middle School.
That middle school student attends Cary Academy.
9. Capitalize religious holidays, texts, and religions.
We read the Torah in my Hebrew class Saturday.

10. Capitalize the first letter and all the major words
in a title (not prepositions or articles).
I love reading the Maximum Ride series of novels.
We loved reading C.S. Lewis's

today's News and Observer.
11. Capitalize specific holidays, months of the year,
and days of the week, but NOT seasons.
