1. ON IMMIGRATION…ECOWAS CONVERGE TODAY
eads of States and governments from the West African sub-region will today meet in
Accra, Ghana for the opening session of a two-day summit of the Economic
Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The summit is the 45th Ordinary
Session of the ECOWAS Heads of States and Government.
The summit will among other things, consider a report on the Community’s main activities and
projects over the first half of this year, and also discuss a proposal to improve the
implementation of the region’s free movement protocol through the introduction of a region-
wide biometric identity card system for citizens.
Also expected to be discussed at the summit is the possible abolition of residence permit
requirements for all citizens within Member States.
Our particular interest as an immigration/corporate law firm in the course of this summit
include: a recommendation for the introduction of biometric ID cards for all ECOWAS citizens
and the abolition of residence permit requirements for all citizens within member states; and
security.
This summit is in pursuance of a report presented by Foreign and Defence ministers of member
states from an earlier meeting in Accra.
We are following the summit and be sure to be informed of relevant developments and the final
outcome of the meeting.
We would have done our duty.
Please stay tuned!
