Forest, forestry and forest products and SDGs: Comprehensive research and development
1. Forest, forestry and forest products and SDGs
Comprehensive research and development
Haruo Sawada, Ph. D.
President, Forest Research and Management Organization (FRMO)
Our mission:
We contribute to the development of
a sustainable human society that
utilizes the gift of resources bestowed
by the rich and divers forests in an
environmentally sound way

2. FRMO and SDGs - Introduction
• In the 110-year history of FFPRI, Forest Research and
Management Organization, numerous scientific findings
on the forest ecosystem functions, biodiversity
preservations, forestry practice, superior tree varieties
selections and forest products manufacturing have
contributed to sustainable forest management.
• But global environment changes become big issues
• Therefore, we strengthen fitting further research on the
basis of these achievements for addressing global
environmental issues, including the United Nations
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Brief introduction of our activities
3. 1) Development of forest management technologies for
further utilization of various forest functions
• To fulfill expecting functions of forests through socio-economic
forest management systems based on new and existing
knowledges of forest ecosystems
Quantification of the
water resources
conservation function
Assessment of the
carbon stock in
forests
Forest management balancing
biodiversity conservation and
timber production
4. 2) Development of sustainable forestry systems for stable
supply of forest products
• To achieve stable domestic timber supply by developing actionable
methods and technologies for practitioners on forest management
and timber harvest
High quality container-
seedling production
Effective woody biomass
utilization for bio-energy
production
5. 3) Development of wood and woody resource utilization
technologies for promoting the use of timber
• To produce new woody material such as CLT and extract new
materials from timber, such as PEG modified glycol-lignin and CNF
(cellulose Nano-fiber) by interdisciplinary collaboration
Performance assessment
(evaluation) of wood-based
materials including CLT
Production of modified
glycol-lignin as industrial
raw material
6. 4) Development of the utilization technology of forest organisms,
and the breeding technologies for creating diverse tree varieties
• To promote the utilization of fungi as non-timber forest product by
elucidating the functions of forest organisms and implement the
forest plantation by developing superior tree varieties
Development of matsutake
mushroom growing technologies
Cedar varieties (a) conventional
and (b) fast growing
7. 5) Forest Management Activities and Forest Insurance Services
• Headwater forest management as a public safety net in regional
scale according to the forest owner, community and national policy.
• Forest insurance service for forest owners that covers damages in
forests caused by natural disasters (8 types). Science advisory
mechanism is implemented
Conservation of
water sources
Impact assessment of
climate and environmental
conservation
Conservation of land and
resilience against disasters
8. Conclusion
Through the research and development by introducing digital
revolution, we contribute to achieve SDGs by
• Development of science and technology on F, F & FP
• Revitalization of the forestry and forest products industries
• Establishment of national science system supporting research,
development and education on sustainable ecological systems
• Promotion of international partnerships and
• Studies on world poverty and inequality, especially with JICA
