World Sidecar Championship Final Round at Oschersleben,
Germany, 21-23 August
Reeves & Cluze still aiming for top spot despite last two DNFs
Rounds 5 (Brands Hatch) and 6 (Assen) have been unkind to the Anglo-French reigning
World Champions with DNF disasters at both rounds.
At Brands, conditions were perfect for Sunday’s race at the Kent venue but Tim and Gregory
hit problems on the very first lap when the gear lever broke leaving them in second gear.
They immediately pulled into pit lane to make some frantic adjustments and with terrific
assistance from Sam Neate, Johnny Mowatt and the rest of the Paul Bird Motorsport team,
they were able to rejoin the race albeit one lap down.
Lying in 22nd
and last place, Tim and Gregory set the fastest lap of the race as they climbed
up to 18th
place but on the 12th
lap they were pushed wide by Gary Bryan going into Dingle
Dell. Tim had just lined up an overtaking manoeuvre only to hold back at the last minute due
to waved yellow flags but just as he did so, Bryan’s engine seized. He drifted wide and it put
Tim and Gregory into the gravel trap.
In Round 6 at Assen, in front of 87,500 motorsport fans, Tim and Gregory looked like they
were heading for another win but more drama followed. On lap ten the engine blew and this
caused a fire through the machine. One of the engine conrods had fractured a fuel pipe,
soaking the machine with fuel, which then ignited. This gave Streuer and Koerts the lead in
the race which they went on to win. Paivarinta/Kainulainen had also been passed by
Delannoy/Rousseau who finished second. The Finnish pair came in third for the final
podium place.
These results have pushed our pair into third place in the Championship standings, on 125
points, with Streur/Koerts on 140 and Paivarinta/Kainulainen on 136. There are two races
at Oscherleben, a sprint of 10 laps on Saturday and Gold Race of 20 laps on Sunday. With
25 points for a win, 20 for second and 16 for third, Tim & Gregory really need to win both
races to have any chance of securing the World Championship again this year.
Glennis Toms, of Team EAide Motorsport and Managing Director of Employers’ Aide, said
“We are going out to Germany to support them and hope we have something to celebrate
on Sunday night!”
