denier recycled ripstop polyester. StormRepel®
durable
water-repellent (DWR) finish beads water on the surface,
so it doesn’t soak into the fabric.
Inside the jacket, including the hood, our 800 fill Storm-
Down™ powered by DownTek™ sets a new standard for
moisture-resistant down. Each cluster is treated with a
DWR finish, so the down retains its loft and superior
insulating properties even in wet conditions. We performed
extensive tests to determine the best DWR Down available,
and the DownTek technology is clearly superior. Packs
down into the left-hand front pocket, and a carabiner
clip-in loop keeps it instantly accessible for clipping to a
harness when you don’t have a pack.

very major outdoor brand sponsors a roster of pro athletes, but First
Ascent took a different approach. Rather than ship existing product
for validating feedback, our guide built process integrated mountain
professionals into every stage of the product design cycle. The crux of
what makes their intense input so integral to the gear we build is the
environments that they live in and the constant expeditions that serve as a
global proving ground for our First Ascent technical gear and apparel.
At every stage of the development in our Eddie Bauer First Ascent line,
we integrate components that our world-renowned team of mountain and
ski guides demands after testing it in locations from Everest, Denali, and
Antarctica to the Andes and the Chugach. We’ve integrated feedback from
53 intense gear-testing expeditions to determine the specifics of function,
fabric, and form, as well as the precise location of every seam and stitch.
The result is a line of gear that has proven itself at the extremes.

alpine realm. It was a big objective that required commitment, focus, and
a roster of respected experts who lived and worked in the mountains.
To launch the series, we enlisted a team of world-class
guides not simply to endorse our products, but to build
our gear from scratch, then test it in their mountain
workplace. We sent them out on expeditions to the
world’s tallest peaks and harshest environments, where
they subjected every idea, prototype, and
piece of Eddie Bauer First Ascent gear to
the ultimate test. We gave them veto power
on design and completely integrated them
into the process to shape our gear into final
form. They logged hundreds of guide days
in the field, providing us with vital feedback
on what worked and what didn’t cut it.
Gear went to market only after it earned
their nod of approval. Then we sent them back again and
repeated the cycle during another long season in the field.
We christened our mindshift as the guide built process.
Five years after Eddie Bauer First Ascent launched, our
record speaks volumes. Thirteen industry best-in-class
awards, 53 pioneering testing expeditions, and a series of innovative
technical gear that has earned widespread respect and enabled personal
adventures, big and small, in mountain ranges around the globe.

Q: HOW HAS THE GUIDE BUILT
PROCESS EVOLVED IN FIVE YEARS?
A: There has been a lot of change and
growth. We’ve produced hundreds of tents
that we ended up not even sending to
market because they weren’t quite ready.
But we’ve also learned a lot: our process
has gotten very refined. I remember the
first year of First Ascent when I had my
entire kit on Everest in 2009, and I couldn’t
believe how well everything came out.
Q: WHAT SURPRISED YOU ABOUT
THE GROWTH OF FIRST ASCENT?
A: How far-reaching and well-received
the First Ascent product has become.
When we started out, I was one of six
guides. We only had six opinions, but
it turned out we had six really strong
opinions. We’ve expanded that and grown
each and every year, and gotten more
feedback and figured out what works
well and what doesn’t. I think I’m most
impressed that we have kept refining the
product. We didn’t just stop with good.
Q: WHAT HAS CHANGED SINCE THE
DAYS OF THE ORIGINAL SIX?
A: We’ve increased our team, so we
have more expertise to build even more
technical products that suit a larger
audience. One thing that has stayed the
same is we’ve kept true to the guide built
process, so all of the guides work together
to design and build the gear, not just for
what we need for our own technical use,
but gear that works for our clients as well.
