Niche Manufacturers of Riding Lawn Mowers
Some manufacturers specialize in the manufactures of agricultural implements and specialized equipments
for home garden section. These manufacturers have now ventured in lawnmowers. The case of John Deere is
very old and some new manufacturers have come in and started doing what John Deere has done (and have
become successful in that).
The manufacturers like Toro, Coronet, Ariens, Husqvarna, have an established presence in this niche market
and are standing up to competition from the majors like the one given above. The manufacturers have some
good models like LX series, GT 2000 series, 5XI series and more like it. Toro and Simplicity from Coronet are
worth mentioning. The models have been well received in the market and are worth the money.
There are others like Case, Murray, Snapper. These manufacturers are very popular in the North America
segment and are very popular in Europe.
There are still ore manufacturers like Grasshopper, Troy built, Dixon industries, Club cadet who have not
made it big but with the quality and production range they have, they have the capacity to make it big and
stand up to the giants like Honda, Ford, John Deere.
Competition From China
Competition from Chine is increasing and many Chinese manufacturers are eyeing at the North America and
European markets. They have successful penetrated the markets and have been enticing the market with
lower cost. In fact, it is only because of the lower costs, their market penetration is good.
Since it is a market for consumer durables, the market also looks at the price. The American and European
markets are quality conscious and are not very price sensitive. The market capturing will depend on the
3. quality of the product and may be that the Chinese will improve the quality and capture market as Japanese
manufacturers have done in automobile segment in a not too distant past.
With so many choices how do you choose? If you are new to riding mowers, you might depend on feedback
from friends, or if you are the type that is not averse to risk taking, go for Chinese manufacturers and there is
a 90% chance that you will not be sorry.

Dixon mower not charging battery Model 3362 year 1998?
I am troubleshooting the problem and need some information about the charging system. If someone can tell me
anything about it, it will be more than I currently know.

What brand of engine? Is it a briggs, kohler, tecumseh? What type of charging system do you have? Do the
headlights come on with the engine shut off or does the engine need to be running? Is the battery good?
On a briggs engine with the seperate headlight circuit there is a red and a orange wire coming from the alternator.
The orange goes to the head lights, the red is charging. There is a diode in the red line. You should get 3 amps
after the diode. The orange wire should have 14 volts. Check the voltage/amps downstream of the diode. This
should tell you if the diode is good. It should have 28 volts AC on the alternator side of the diode. This will tell you if
the alternator is good.

How do I adjust drive clutches on Dixon ztr 4421 mower?
5. I have an old Dixon ztr 4421 chain drive & vertical cone clutch system. I need to adjust the left side clutch so it will
equal the right side clutch tension.

i used to work on these for a living. seems like there was a spring steel rod like 5/16 or 3/8 diameter and maybe 6
or 8″ long that carried the “female” cones and these tended to break alot, causing the left or right side to steer
funny. i do remember that you have to run these rods in or out to adjust the clearance between the cones and then
adjust the handles till they both lined up in the “neutral” position.
go to a Dixon dealer and get a service manual

How can I seal a crack in my plastic gas tank on my Dixon ZTR lawn mower so gas won’t leak out?
The bottom of my gas tank has a long small crack allowing the gas to leak out. I have tried a couple of different putty’s
to seal it but they do not hold in the gas, obviously they don’t adhere to plastic.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

SealAll would be a temporary fix but to fix that tank you would need to have it plastic welded and no one is gonna
try that on a tank that has had fuel in it already…

The commercial mowers most certainly have an adjustable deck height via a hand lever on the right hand side to
the unit.
The residential models like the Ram 44 & 50, Ram Mag 44 & 50 can all be adjusted from 1.5 – 4.5″ cutting
heights. The SpeedZTR models are only adjustable from 1.5 – 4.0 “.
