“NOW I’m here and I’m standing
strong,” sang Tenison Woods College
student Ah Sae Soe at the Mount
Gambier Railway Lands on Saturday.
The energetic and bright-faced
13-year-old was just part of a colour-
ful program celebrating the city’s
cultural diversity ahead of Harmony
Day yesterday.
Judging by the food that was served,
the event attracted close to 400 people,
according to Limestone Coast Migrant
Resource Centre manager Anelia
Blackie, who said a bigger multi-
cultural festival was already being
planned for Harmony Day next year.
Formerly just for schools, Saturday’s
program marked the first time events
linked to Harmony Day had been
staged publicly for the wider Mount
Gambier community, she said.
Under the national theme “Everyone
Belongs”, the event ran from noon to
3pm with food and live entertainment
coordinated by the Migrant Resource
Centre.
As well as traditional dancing and
musical performances, there was
plenty of traditional food, including
Dutch, South African,
Karen, Karenni
and Congolese,
and a sausage
sizzle provided
by the Rotary
Club of Mount
Gambier.
