single one story module designed to be an ar-
chitectural/engineerring classroom for Mission
Bay High School in San Diego, Ca. Drafting

room. Passive heating, cooling, lighting and
ventilaion are employed as teaching devices.
A roof mounted renewable energy system
provides 95% of the total energy needed to run
HVAC and other necessary devices.

rooms, the interior envelope of the ‘modular
relocatable classroom is designed to accept
WKH EHQH¿WV RI WKH FOLPDWH LW LV GHVLJQHG RQ $V
Glen Murcutt suggests,’ tread lightly on the
land’, this design does with passive systems
that tap into the climate, vegetation and pre-
cipetation conserved and recycled parts.

Three module school building. Passive systems
support an effort to keep systems off the energy grid high atop rural
mountains through: top and side-lighting, tromb wall heating, passive
ventilation, site grading and landscaping.
The roof mounted sky light and dual
clerestories work with sun angles
throughout year to provide
plenty of fresh natural
daylight
Due to heavy rains, water
channels on site gather rain into
a shallow pool on north
side of building in order to
ÀRZ XQGHU WKH EXLOGLQJ
to the south. Trees are located at calculated points to diffuse direct
sun at low sun altitudes at 8 am and 3 pm in both Summer and winter
(hours of school beginning and end). (See axonometric sketch/left).

Water is harvested and stored
through a system of manually

Passive systems support an effort to keep systems off the energy grid high atop rural mountains through: top and side-lighting, tromb wall heating, passive ventilation, site grading and landscaping. The roof mounted sky light and dual clerestories work with sun angles throughout year to provide plenty of fresh natural daylight Due to heavy rains, water channels on site gather rain into a shallow pool on north side of building in order to ÀRZ XQGHU WKH EXLOGLQJ to the south. Trees are located at calculated points to diffuse direct sun at low sun altitudes at 8 am and 3 pm in both Summer and winter (hours of school beginning and end). (See axonometric sketch/left).
