INTRODUCTION
• While some forms of technology may have made positive
changes in the world, there is evidence for the negative
effects of technology and its overuse, as well.
• Social media and mobile devices may lead to psychological and
physical issues, such as eyestrain and difficulty focusing on
important tasks. They may also contribute to more serious health
conditions, such as depression.

Isolation
Technologies, such as social media, are designed to bring people together, yet they
may have the opposite effect in some cases.
A 2017study in young adults aged 19–32 years found that people with higher social
media use were more than three times as likely to feel socially isolated than those
who did not use social media as often.

Digital dementia
• People with digital dementia
may have trouble focusing or
remembering information that
they have read online or seen in
videos.

Cyberchondria
• It is characterized by anxiety
and paranoia about one’s
health. People with
cyberchondria may search the
internet for information about
their symptoms and health
concerns.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
• We don’t know whether or not overuse of the internet can lead to
developing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), as more
research is needed in this area. However, there are some studies that
suggest a correlation between the two.

Depression and anxiety
Elizabeth M Seabrook, BPsych (Hons), corresponding author Margaret L Kern,
PhD, and Nikki S Rickard, PhD
Their research found mixed results. People who had more positive interactions and
social support on these platforms appeared to have lower levels of depression and
anxiety.
However, the reverse was also true. People who perceived that they had more
negative social interactions online and who were more prone to social comparison
experienced higher levels of depression and anxiety.

CASE STUDIES
7. Go, Change the world
Low self-esteem
• A study published in the journal
JAMA Pediatrics found that
teenagers who spend more
than three hours a day on
social media are more likely to
have poor mental health,
including low self-esteem.

Obsessive-
Compulsive Disorder
• A 12-year-old boy upon
exploration the boy reported 2
years duration of symptoms that
were characterized by intrusive,
unpleasant and repetitive gory
images of people engaged in
violence or soaked in blood that
interfered with his ability to study
8. Go, Change the world
• Study was conducted to analyze the progression of numerous wellbeing-related
factors among 46,817 adolescents and young adults in Europe.
• The evidence demonstrated that, while overall internet usage rose robustly, both
life satisfaction and health problems remained stable.
• Nonetheless, concerns about the effects of new technology on adolescent
development and their perceived susceptibility to the influence of digital
technology as a supposedly vulnerable group have been widely debated

Reported causes of technology’s impact on incivility.
The first theme that emerged was the participants’ suggestion that technology impacts
incivility. Participants cited three distinct areas; dependency, behaviors, and accessibility.
These
three areas are detailed below supported by examples of participant statements.
Dependency. Dependency on technology has increased noticeably with students
increased use of social network sites. Technology gives the opportunity to have a constant
connection to email, instant messaging, and text messages. The increasing use and
dependency of technology in everyday communications has impacted behaviors and
accessibility.

CONCLUSION
• Smartphones, the internet, and other modern technology greatly affect us
as individuals and society as a whole. These include positive as well as
negative impacts. We need to be careful not to become dependent on
technology and take breaks from it so that the scale doesn’t tip to our
disadvantage.
• Modern tech has caused many cognitive disorders and we need to learn
some practices that will mitigate the negative effects on us. This way, we’ll
enjoy the technological benefits in a healthy relationship.
