4. 1. The Mahabodhi Tree
• The tree under which Lord Buddha attained
Enlightenment.
• One of the most visited religious places by pilgrims
from around the world.
• History says that the daughter of an Indian emperor
brought a sapling of the Bodhi tree to Sri Lanka.
• Stands at 80 feet and is over 100 years old.
5. 2. Animesa-Locana Stupa
• The place where Lord Buddha spent the second of
week of enlightenment, gazing at the Bodhi Tree.
• Located at the Mahabodhi Complex, and is visited for
meditation.
• Monks conduct early morning prayer sessions every
morning at the prayer hall built on site.
6. 3. Chankramana Chaitya
• Known as the “Jewel Walk” and is where Lord Buddha
paced during his third week of enlightenment.
• History states that as Lord Buddha walked across this
platform, lotus flowers bloomed at each step taken.
• Located on north of the Mahabodhi Complex and boasts
19 lotus flowers to signify Lord Buddha’s enlightenment.
7. 4. Ratnagarh Chaitya
• Located northwest of the Mahabodhi Complex and is
where Lord Buddha spent the fourth week of
enlightenment.
• History states that Lord Buddha received his vision
for the future at this site.
• 5 rays of color emitted from his body during this
week which are now combined to form the Buddhist
flag.
8. 5. Ajapala Nigrodha Tree
• History states that Lord Buddha spent the fifth week of
enlightenment under this tree, and purified it.
• Experts say that a young shepherd boy planted this tree
to protect the Lord Buddha during enlightenment.
• Holds a brass bell that was donated by pilgrims from
Myanmar during the 19th century.
9. 6. Muchalinda Lake
• Located on the right of the Mahabodhi Complex and is
where Lord Buddha spent the sixth week of
enlightenment.
• It is stated that Lord Buddha survived a heavy rainstorm
with the protection of the lake’s king serpent, coiled
around the Buddha’s body.
• Holds a statue of a serpent coiled around the Buddha’s
body, providing shelter from the rain.
10. 7. Rajayatana Tree
• Known as where Lord Buddha had spent the seventh
week of enlightenment.
• History states that He received His first disciples at this
site, who provided Him the first meal as Lord Buddha.
• Located on the southeast side of the Mahabodhi Temple.
